Justice for Teri | Soul Food 1997 - 90s classic movie commentary

Музыка

If you love long movie reviews, you will enjoy this review/ commentary on Soul Food. Teri deserved so much more than what she was given. Now that I can view this movie from a big age perspective, they used her and did not consider her feelings at all....among other things.

She was definitely a victim, however u don’t have 2 agree with me, but every1 in that family was guilty of something bad. Max & Kenny guilty of betraying Terry, Lem guilty of legal trouble, Bird guilty of running into her ex behind her Lem’s back, Miles & Faith guilty of getting vulnerable & sleeping together, Terry guilty of diminishing her husband‘s dreams & butting in2 lem & Bird‘s business calling Blimp. Mother Joe, guilty of not taking care of herself. Uncle Pete guilty of mistaking his niece 4 his sister

Big Mama was the real villain. If she had been encouraging the family to show Teri some respect all along, their lives would’ve been much more harmonious. Instead she conditioned Teri to swallow disrespect, and she literally sat on a small fortune, while allowing Teri to be financially and emotionally abused by her, her sisters, AND their husbands.

Let’s not forget Cousin Faith who Terri took in after Max encouraged her to just to avoid her Karma for stealing Kenny from Terri. For Momma Joe to treat Terri like sh*t she maybe not Papa Joseph’s real daughter as Momma Joe messed around on Papa Joseph with Faith’s father (Momma Joe was Max) while he was in the army. Who knows what Skeletons Mama Joe has for her to say “We all have skeletons” hmm as she was projecting at that moment 🤦🏾‍♂️..

When re-watching a positive Black family film and you realize how toxic the family was. I wrote a 40 page paper about the terrible gender politics of Soul Food, particularly how Terri was treated, both as a character, and in terms of how the character was supposed to be perceived by audiences. Everyone hated Terri, but she was literally keeping the whole family afloat while Big Mama sat on a hidden pile of cash.

Looking back, big mama was wrong for always sweeping shit under the rug. She’s kind of the root of the problem that’s plaguing this family

  • @jakimsingletary164

    @jakimsingletary164

    Жыл бұрын

Yeah I agree, Momma Joe was the main root of the problems. I wouldn’t be surprised if She had more skeletons in her closet than anybody in that whole family as Ahmad quoted her in always saying everyone has skeletons. Basically saying Is that Terri maybe Faith’s half sister in Momma Joe and Faith’s father having an affair while Papa Joseph was in the war and behind her late sister’s (Faith’s mom) back (Momma Joe was the original Max) which I bet if they make a 2nd sequel to expose that secret and get Terri justice. It makes perfect sense as Faith and Terri are both light skinned while Max and Bird are dark skinned. And the way Momma Joe treats Terri by belittling her (on being on Husband #2) and not thinking of her as also the main strongest in taking care of the whole family including Momma Joe financially with a successful career as an attorney who would make partner with no appreciation from them whatsoever. What about The whole Chaperone rules when Terri dated Kenny and having Max come along and that caused problems into Max stealing Kenny from Terri which is the main reasons why the two sisters don’t get along. Momma Joe told Terri to get over it basically without saying much to Max about her actions while sweeping it under the rug. Not telling the family to pull their own weight into taking care of themselves instead of always going to Terri every-time they get into financial difficulties. All that loop Momma Joe had in her brother’s TV while saying the cash was nothing but a myth which is ridiculous because that loop could of helped pay half her bills or take care of the family in need sometimes instead of always mooching off her own daughter’s success. Then of course always bailing out Cousin Faith when she was young and wild while always making excuses for both her and Max’s behavior in looking the other way. So sad, as Momma Joe was Faith and Max back in her younger days.

Other than Max realizing that she was Faith in taking Terri’s men I bet she was really pissed off when Faith walked in because Karma was starting (after revealing her past on why her and Terri don’t get along) had She had Faith stay in her home. I bet that’s also why she all nice to Faith other than forgiving her because the weight was off Max (Now that Faith was at Terri’s house). She told Max to go with Terri on her date with Kenny and instead of chaperoning Max helped herself to Kenny. Not once did Mama Joe say anything to Max about her wrong doing and instead she told Terri to get over it. Ahmad said Mama Joe said everyone has skeletons in the closet, So do her I bet as she probably use to be Max and Faith when she young for her to always excuse their behavior like nothing happened. Honestly, why did they blame Terri for Lem going to jail? It was BIRD who made a deal with him to get Lem a job. It was BIRD who accepted that bracelet. It was LEM who snatched her into that back room and bird was screaming while Lem was tossing things all over the place. And it was LEM who had that gun illegally. He got himself arrested. I always wished Terri would have gotten Therapy and cut off her freeloaders of a family. They were literally her abusers. Also, why did Faith, Miles, or anyone in that family think they were entitled to any of the money? Terri needed a refund for all the money she was giving. And why didn't bird get Lem some barber classes and make him a barber in her shop? I don't know why any of them thought they needed that money more than Terri or deserved it. Just greedy. Especially the sister having the nerve to financially volunteer Terry and miles in the kitchen. Miles should have stood up and said No. He married into the family but didn't volunteer to be their breadwinner. Especially among two other men who should really feel ashamed for not financially contributing. I bet they never even attempt to pay Terry back in installments ever. Vivica's character said 'maybe we can pay you back in installments'. With their carefree attitude about her money, you know for sure they were never paying her back. The woman was a lawyer, not a billionaire. Heaven forbid this was today with the cost of inflation and just prices in general. Terry would be flat broke and living like the uncle in big mama house. Atleast until they lost the house since for some reason, no one ever had money to pay for anything. Like, how did bird and lem live there rent free and not even pay utilities? Its utilities! All emotionally and financially abusive and they are teaching those children a terrible way to value family.

I couldn’t agree with you more, not to mention it was Lem who also broke the glass door of Bird’s shop and it was Bird who was crying hysterically after Lem stormed off after repeatedly throwing things around causing all of that in Terri taking action in protecting her sister. Yet she gets the full blame for their mistakes and no thank you for helping Lem get release out of jail and get his job back after she realize she made a mistake in thinking Lem beat up Bird. She needed therapy and let the family be after that last Sunday Dinner as soon as she got her cash from the Uncle’s TV. It would of been smart if Ahmad or somebody with common sense to say that that cash should go Terri after all she’s done for that ungrateful family (except Ahmad) in helping financially with no thank you or pay back whatsoever. That money could be their own pay back to Terri.

Terry shouldn't have called Blimp to retaliate. She tried to clean dirtyness with dirtyness. Bad move. Everything else you said though was completely true. When you see this as a kid, you look at it more like Ahmad did, where you see who's trying to do right as abstract as possible. Nuance and unsaid energies aren't noticed by a child. But when you grow older and actually understand everything that was happening, you see who really was the fxck ups and the victims. Now they all had their problems, Terri included. But she definitely was the most responsible, and everyone tried to bash her for it, while simultaneously leaning on it 🤦🏾 it's ridiculous. I get now why she wanted to sell the house. Cuz NONE of them could take it on, and she was tired of doing EVERYTHING. The only thing I would have done more if I was her was support her husband a little more. He had the means to pursue his dream, and wanted to go for it now while he actually had opportunity and it wouldn't cripple them. And she basically blew him off. Which is why he connected with Faith in the first place (not justifying his hook up though, that was ALL THE WAY fxcked up my guy 🤦🏾🤦🏾 WHY would he do that? He didn't even want to be with her for real 😵‍💫) But yeah, Terri didn't deserve the bullshxt she went through with them. At all

I like how Max also forced Faith to stay w/Teri as well. Max didn't want any karma of Faith taking Kenny like she took Kenny from Teri. Max was like Teri, Faith is staying w/you cause she's not staying with her, Kenny, & the kids. The family just forever piled on Teri. It also seemed when Teri came home and saw Ahmad at her house she didn't know he was staying. Max didn't even call Teri and asked if Ahmad could stay and hoisted Kelly off on Bird & Liam. Antagonized Teri saying she can't cook and she's the better cook. They say Max is the strongest. Please, she's the worst of the three sisters.

Max was my least favorite of the sisters. Couldn't stand her then, can't stand her now. Her constantly bragging about her cooking is because it's literally all she had going for her. If she's such a good cook, go to cooking school and become a professional chef. But that's work, and she'd rather leech off her sister while simultaneously disrespecting and tearing her down. I low key think Max was jealous of Terri.

They really were foul. Broke sister, man stealing sister and cousin, jail bird husbands, cheaters, etc. No arguments here. They did her FOUL, BUT she was also an ENABLER. I learned in my adulthood that if you expect it back or if you’re going to complain about it, it’s not a gift. Basically, don’t be a lender or a borrower, and stop being the bank for broke family members with expensive taste. Bird and her man would be flying to the court house lol 😂😂😂 Also, people really don’t understand diabetes. That type of food doesn’t cause diabetes. It’s how it’s prepared and how much of it you eat plus a long list of other factors.

One of the biggest lessons that I've learned is that if I can't afford to go without it, don't give it. Money can cause so much damage in relationships. Diabetes is tricky because it affects everyone differently. I have type 2 and I was able to get it controlled through a low-carb, low-sugar diet. I still indulge from time to time but find that it doesn't mess with my numbers too much. It's hard work managing it. You have to be extremely mindful of what you consume.

Huey Freeman: We're gonna pause this for the benefit of all ya'll that never saw Soul Food. Soul Food is a movie about a big, humongous, black grandmother, aptly named Big Mama. Big Mama demonstrates her love by feeding herself and her offspring enormous amounts of pig lard. Then - get this - Big Mama's arteries are so clogged, they gotta amputate her arm. Robert 'Granddad' Freeman: It was her leg! Huey Freeman: Right, OK, whatever, leg. Then, she dies from a heart attack or another stroke or somethin'. And what does the family do after she dies? They get together for a Sunday dinner and eat the same food that just killed Big Mama. The *same* food. They didn't learn a lesson, nobody went on a diet, and that's the end of the movie. Even as a child, I felt sorry for Terri, and watching this in adult eyes, I can now relate to her. I got a high paying job and the rest of my family expects me to be the breadwinner for everyone else. They always try to "borrow" money for me, even for their own mistakes, and if I say no, I'm verbally crucified and constantly guilt-tripped. The worst part is that every time they "borrow" money for me, they say they will pay me back this particular day, and when that day actually comes, they either push it back another day or only pay me half of what they "borrow" from me. So I feel Terri's pain. It's fucked up how families guilt-trip you to sacrifice your life-savings at the expense of your own financial priorities.

Faith was about to get up and leave then Maxine told Faith to stay. Maxine was more worried about Faith than her own sister who had just got betrayed by her husband and cousin. It’s like Teri didn’t have the right to be human or something smh. Even at a young age I just wish I could’ve jumped in the screen and hug Teri. She always had to be the strong one. The moment after Ahmad revealed why Max and Terri don’t get along, Faith walks in the door which went downhill from there. Instead Max pushed her onto to Terri by saying : Take the Hoochie Mama in because she can’t stay with me, Kenny and the kids. Why was that ?? Oh because Max was projecting her past of being a fast ass onto Faith (in taking Terri’s men) while scared that Karma was coming back on her. Cousin like Cousin. Max was all ride or die for Bird at her and Lem’s wedding about to beat up his hoochie Mama ex with The Sisters behind her and when Terri gets wronged by Faith and everyone looks the other way except Bird (telling Lem I can’t believe she’s here). Wonder what changed Max’s attitude towards Faith. Did Max realize her own past or was it because Faith just young in being bad as she was a lonely soul who needed love, if the 1st reason is true she should also apologize to Terri stealing Kenny. All I could remember about this movie when I was younger was that Vanessa Williams was chasing someone at a party with a knife. Now that I'm older, I can understand someone being so enraged after years of being taken advantage, and being constantly dismissed. Miles tried to say she wasn't fun anymore and it's like, DUH! Having so many responsibilities and worries will zap the fun out of you real quick! And her family was still on bullshit after Big Mama's funeral - they still welcomed the trifling cousin and cheating husband. Those two should've been axed! And they were always throwing her relationships in her face when they wanted to shut her up. When Bird was telling Terri she needed to worry about her cheating husband, I was like 'Damn'! That was my last straw. The abuse she was going through was making me sick.

It's funny how old this pops off at The Anniversary Party of Max and Kenny like we said before Terry was originally with Kenny and then she confronts her cousin that sleeping with her current husband and said party after being thrown to the Wolves as the financial bearer of the burden I think this is why she never had kids cuz she's raising everybody else financially

I’ve heard of this. Some women (who may have wanted kids before) decide they no longer want them because they’ve spent a lot of their adult life taking care of others and they become so drained of it… that having kids is no longer a desire.

You omitted the scene when Maxine smashed Teri's bf who she ended marrying. And you already know what would've happened if Amahd wasn't with Teri. The same Teri that called the goons on Lem? The same Teri who went straight for the butcher block on her husband? Oh you knew..!

As a kid and as an adult I empathized with Terri the most. Her family straight used her.

Whether Terri and Myles werent happy for a long time they were still very much married. Myles and Faith were beyond wrong. I didnt agree with them still welcoming Faith.

This movie comes off different once you get older. Terri was getting straight used all over the place.

That pastor was a creep and I’m mad that the family gave his predatory ass a pass. Smh I didn’t see this movie until last year, I’ve always known about it since it came out, even the tv show however I was six years old in 1997 so of course I wasn’t gonna see this lol but that family was a mess. That flashback scene where Vivica and Vanessa’s characters were at the skating rink and Kurtis Blow starts playing cracked me up. Big mama played favorites, she didn’t like Terri and I’m still tripping about her burning her arm and trying to use butter??? My maternal family is from Alabama and I’ve never heard of no shit like that.

@@PoliticalAbstract Same. Never heard that method either and I'm from SC. When I burned my arm on a heater I went to the emergency room. I was given some ointment but I still have the scar to this day. Yes the pastor was indeed a creep. I never thought about Big Momma liking Maxine more than Teri but now I kinda wonder.

@@fsumpter I wonder if Mamma Joe was Max back when she was young (Ahmad said Momma Joe said everyone has skeletons in they closet including her I bet, never no enemies my ass) before marrying the father then became a woman of God holding the family down with Sunday Dinner. Momma Joe did Terri wrong in not appreciating her as successful attorney in holding Momma Joe and the family down financially. Pastor was a creep and I finally know what he meant when he said delicious legs 🦵under the I mean on the table. I bet he was referring to Bird I bet and How he kept on telling Momma Joe that her girls look good especially Baby Bird. Not to mention how he quickly wiped his mouth when he saw Faith then hugged up on her in a creepy manner as he introduced himself..
