It’s a bit uncanny to think that the writers intended for Lain to break the fourth wall and “exist” in our reality through our thoughts and memories of her. As a character, Lain left a big impression on me, and I found myself leaving the show haunted with the feeling that I had left someone behind. In a weird way, I miss her. Not many characters have “come to life” like that for me. I think part of the reason is that Lain seemed to be left all alone in her world, and I felt bad leaving her there. But now that I think of it, her separation from the other characters only underscores the idea that she exists in a way that they do not-I can leave the supporting characters behind in the world of the anime without feeling remorse, but Lain seems more real-more like a person I’m leaving behind. It’s disturbing.

It's funny cause I recently went through the old Lain game for PS1, and it's stated that Lain's eyesight is better than most, but her psychiatrist questions if she had Adie's syndrome. I looked it up later and Adie's syndrome is actually characterized by wider pupils, not smaller. I don't think she was meant to be interpreted as a very knowledgeable character: Lain was actually her first client

Noticed how India, never try to conquered their neighbors throughout human recorded history as buddhists while the rest try to invade or conquer it. If you have a big ego, you will never be happy while living in this world despite being very rich in wealth. If you have a big ego, you are prone for any addiction as well as being a very insecure person. When you are insecure, you have hurt other people so deeply that you will try to hide it and ignore it like it never happened hence why have an ego. Also you have something very dark inside of you having a very difficult time forgiving people who have hurt you the most in the past. Is it worth it carrying a big bag full of bricks as an attachment throughout your entire lifetime instead of being happy and enjoying your short life? You decide, but when your moment comes, you'll have to face your worst fears and there is no escaping it but to face it. Accepting death is the calmest approach to live your life with no regrets knowing that death is part of life. Death is a place with unlimited different perspectives from people that lived in the past, the ones currently living in the present and the people living into the future. If you get to that place when your moment comes without being attach to anything, then you will be ripe to the understanding of the universal hidden knowledge with ego death and that EVERYTHING is connected.

Everyone seems to forget the scene with "God" and Arisu, which is there to show why Lain rebels against him and the wired: love can only exist in the physical reality. The world of perceptions exists in the form of internet (the Wired), but it's a dangerous theatrical play, and the series shows all of that, from suicides to drugs and abuse of power.

It's what first intrigued me to the show when I was in middle school. Lains cute yet unsettling design because of her eyes it was perfect for me.

Lain's pinpoint pupils could be that she can "see" more than other people. In biology, the pupil shrinks when there's an abundance of light so that the eyes are protected - we only need so much brightness to see before it starts damaging the retina. Conversely, the pupil widens when there's less light, so as to let more in. If you look very closely, Deus has small pupils, where Eiri doesn't. This makes Deus and Lain unique in this feature. To me, this implies that being uploaded to the Wired increases your awareness so much that the eyes are essentially constantly stimulated. This would explain why Iwakura Lain is often seen shading her eyes with her arm or hand, like in the OP - by manifesting physically she has attempted to limit her consciousness so as to better understand humanity, in the same way we shade our eyes to see better in harsh sunlight.

Yeah one episode she literally combines with the internet. But if she was always god I assume she was just becoming aware that she was god as the series went on. She always had the information she just was not aware of it.

This is what present day, present time meant. Still waiting for these ideas of "perception" to grow. It's still relevant and always will be. I genuinely think Chiaki J. Konaka was a genius with this, and he knew exactly what he was trying to say to it.

This is one interesting video, no other one in KZread tried to look into this besides you. Just one detail, Lain hasn't be forgotten by everyone in the show. After she hit the Reset button, she rappears briefly on Taro phone screen briefly, and also for Arisu/Alice. I think most of their memories were removed, but because they were the people most attached to Lain, deep in their minds, they still remember a tiny fraction of her.

I felt like this was a great subject to tackle when it comes to the differences between Lain as a character to the other characters that impact her approach to learn about herself, as well as help us understand. The usage of eyes in this show was something I've noticed with close-ups and shots, but I didn't think too much about her pupils and the purpose of differences with the other characters, so I found that really interesting. While I felt this analysis was great, there were definitely some things I would have liked touched on a bit more - such as your latter part regarding the fourth wall which, while entertaining, could have been elaborated on with regards to the eyes. You also trailed off towards the middle and talked about ego-death (which is something I've honestly never heard of, so it was really awesome to listen to), and separated from your thesis a little bit, but other than that, I found this video extremely well put-together and I will definitely look at your other videos. This was a great analysis, good job!

Impressive interpretation, great analisys. Serial Experiments lain is a underrated show. Its a fucking masterpiece, a truly well polish one.

Fun fact: in the PS1 game, Lain's therapist, Touko, speculates that Lain may have Adie's syndrome, a rare neurological condition where the pupils can be larger or smaller than normal, and cannot respond quickly to different lighting conditions

I really do believe her eyes are different because of her viewpoint of the world, in the PS1 game (which I regard as canon because it is speculated that Serial Experiments Lain was supposed to be a mixed media project) it is mentioned that she might have adie's syndrome and that her eyes aren't dilating properly, her psychiatrist also talks with her about her having better eyesight than other children her age and that she wants to see the world like everyone else. Another thing I noticed is that the pupils of some other characters are also small, their eyes are just darker and the shadow makes the pupil almost invisible. I think this was intentional, for what reason though I have no idea.

Something similar to this I think, is that I've noticed Lain is so easy to replicate in any artstyle. She's adaptable and can fit into practically anything and still be recognized.

I would like to say, I've done acid, and ego death has affected me to this day, my sense of self has been permanently warped because of what happened due to the trip, even if it is a drug, the mental affects are still previlent in my mind today

Does anyone know of the meanings behind the random blotches of color and the color red and blue in the series. I see the color red very prominent reminding me of something like perfect blue.

I'm 4 minutes into the video. Not sure if you mentioned this. Not sure if anyone even noticed this. But the lines that you see in the eyes of Lain resemble the power lines that you often see close up shots of throughout the series.

6:16. I, personally have felt bodily dissociation multiple times, even when not under the influence of psychedelics or drugs ( usually when I'm sleeping). It's an interesting feeling, I also feel anxious or scared sometimes because I don't really feel who I am but I can still think of people I know, like my family. Most people experience bodily dissociation when they're about to die, it's like becoming one with the universe and finally understanding life and everything. Anyways it's a feeling people should definitely experience.

I've heard before that the smaller the pupil, the more connected that character was to the wired. I'm not positive that this is true however.

SEL and NGE are eerily similar to one another, which is made even creeper when you realise that they were both released in the same year. P.S.
