The Funniest Joke in Revolutionary Girl Utena

Time to explain a joke!
Welcome to low effort youtube content. I'm gonna be away from the internet for about a week, and I wanted to make something, so this is the result. I'm trying to keep my videos at a decent quality, so if you didn't find this entertaining then please let me know.

I also find another layer to the joke. The way he talks about wanting to be near someone despite feeling nothing but neglect and abuse from them definitely hints at the way he keeps coming back to Touga despite getting screwed up by him time after time. Even the part of it being a hidden love is true. But he himself is too dense to realize it and he repeatedly subconsciously transfers his feelings about Touga to Anthy. What a great joke. In a true Shrek fashion, it is layered like an onion

My favorite joke comes from the language pun with Nanami's egg and Juri's bowling ball honestly.

In his uniform. Cannot stress enough that he was camping, on school grounds, grilling eggs, in the middle of the night, in his uniform, because he's part of the school council dammit.

Honestly my favorite joke in Utena might be how when elephant in India makes it their mission to fuck over Nanami. It still kills me.

I found it funny because it sort of humbles this character that is written so that you really hate him at first. This totally selfish character is put in his place, cast aside, when he used to be so important to the plot, and displays how forgettable he becomes to the story.

I'm a dub viewer and after watching this video, I feel like the dub kinds messes with the joke. Instead of saying "No one asked you" Utena says "nice skirt, saiyanji". Seeing this in the sub version that you put made me realize that it is sort of out of character for Utena to say that and distracted me from the joke. Utena is someone who is doesn't conform to gender norms, wearing the boys uniform so at least to me, it's weird for her to make fun of a guy who from her supposed perspective (In the dub) also breaking gender norms

Ehhhh, it would make sense if she was using it as retaliation. I can imagine her "showing disdain" for cross-dressing just as a way to "fight back" against those who ridicule herself. (I know this doesn't actually make sense, but it is actually how people like this act in the real world) If you want an actual reason, then I think this scene kind of points out the argument of cross-dressing in the first place. Saionji is wearing something that should be normal, traditional, and effective for his role in swordplay, but because Utena interpreted it as women's clothing she ridicules him for it. Again, sort of out of character but still. I think it would have been funnier/more fitting for Miki to have said it tbh.

I love the dub but unfortunately the first 13 episodes were done in 1999 without even having the full liscense, then like 3-5 years later they went back and finished the rest. So the quality of the dub increases considerably after that point, both in the performances and dialogue.

The first Utena episode that made me laugh out loud was Chu Chu eating that condom in Episode 3, but I didn't catch that until my third time watching through. I agree the jokes associated with Saionji and the exchange diary are the funniest in the series.

you mean the packet in the dress box? I'm pretty sure that was silica gel since it's used to absorb moisture and keep things dry (because the dress disintegrates when wet). Chu-chu's little antics crack me up too!

The situation in eps 4-5 with Nanami's and Anthy's animals is one of my favorites in the series. It follows the rule of threes: first snails, then the snake, then the octopus. Each time, Nanami fantasizes that Miki and Utena will chide Anthy, saying "I've misjudged you!" But instead they are amused and say "That's just like Miss Himemiya!" But the punchline actually comes in the very next bit, where Anthy and Miki look on as Anthy amuses herself with the animated elephant she drew, instead of paying attention to the study session. Anthy is cracking herself up, and Miki and Utena are like "ummm why aren't you paying attention?" It's Anthy's own silliness, and not Nanami's efforts to embarrass her, that cause her friends to be a little >_>

Hey, fantastic video, but you suggest that the Tsuwabuki episode comes before the curry episode. It seems that was actually a production error that no release has bothered to correct, and I suspect that if you take a look at the series with those two episodes switched, you might see a little more... Something. Honestly, I don't know exactly the impact it has, but it does push the Saionji/Anthy focus forward, which seems a good bit of context for the joke.

Your Utena videos give me Life (I'm currently on my 4th or 5th rewatch through and have gotten 8+ people to watch it? Every rewatch with every new person is so REWARDING). What gets me is that this little moment was probably, at least partially added due to budget constraint (the long pause) but it's so blunt and funny and makes a lasting impact...? Keep up the good work!!
