Anyone who has ever accomplished a really difficult goal - be it, say, losing a bunch of weight, getting in shape, getting your degree, starting a business from nothing, winning a championship, trying to change the way the world thinks (I'm watching this shortly after the MLK holiday for example - now there was a man with some really difficult goals) - anyone who has done this understands Jimmy's quote. It's because it's a difficult thing to do that you can really appreciate the accomplishment. You know how hard you had to work to make it happen, and no one can take that away from you. It's the hard that makes it great.

It’s truly was a touching homage to the players who could have been.

This movie is actually one of the great sports films of the 90s. An important film. They just don't make films anymore like they did in the 90s. It's unquestionably the greatest decade of film.

The credits song is "This used to be my playground" by Madonna. It has the saddest and most touching lyrics. And the music video for the song is beautiful.

There is some debate on whether or not Dottie dropped the ball on purpose when Kit collided with her on home plate. It's hinted in the beginning when he tells her grandson to let his younger brother shoot.

I cry every time I see Kit and Dottie hug at the end. Every time.

The last scene was them getting inducted into the Hall of fame

One of my favorite sports films of all time. Gwen’s Davis is a gem. Great actress, beautiful, intelligent, an Olympian, what can’t this woman do? And Tom Hanks, what more could you ask for?

I was 12 when this came out, I'm 42 now and i still get all choked up at the end. I just hear that music and it kills me.

Of course she did. Dotty had what she wanted, let go of her anger at her sisters jealousy etc. and gave her the one thing her sister wanted and needed.

One thing about the 1940s, they sure knew how to dance 💃 😄.

If you aren't aware, the Baseball stadium the women are practicing in is Chicago's Wrigley Field. Note the ivy on the brick wall near home plate. Others have said differently, but I always thought Dottie purposely dropped the ball, to help Kit.

Yes, at the end, a lot of them were original players.

Just a little FYI….the girl who couldn’t read (Shirley Baker) when they announced who made the teams…that’s one of John Cusack’s sisters in real life. She’s the lesser known one.

For the movie, the teams were switched because either Kenosha or South Bend won the World Series in the inaugural 1943 season according to newspaper archives of the time

During the late 1980s in Winthrop, Mass I was on a bowling team with someone who played on the All American Girls Professional Baseball League.... she played from 1950-1952 between Illinois & Indiana... her name was Patricia Brown & as a former player, she was interviewed by Penny Marshall & was a consultant. Sadly, she passed away in the late 90s but I’ll never forget her. I still have yet to see the wing dedicated to them tho & see her name inscribed (all players were inducted) 😭

My daughter and I love this movie...it's just the two of us in our house, and whenever I feel like she needs a boost of confidence when we're out in public, I'll say, "Hey Kit, lay off the high ones!" - remind her that she can do it and she comes from tough stuff. It's a great movie with a great message. My daughter was blown away by the attitudes about women back then, and it's lead to a lot of really good conversations between us.

"There's no crying in baseball!" I love Lori Petty. It is a shame she did a number of bad movies (not this one) and fell off the map. Tank Girl (1995) was her at her best, even if the rest of the movie was a disaster. Fun Fact: Geena Davis really does catch a pop up behind her back. It was supposed to be done by a stunt double, but the double was having trouble. So Davis gave it a go and, well, you've seen the result. Sweet Karma Fact: After they bring out the Peaches for their first game, and announce all of them, they run out on the field. In the background, you can see Rosie O'Donnell trip over a wire and fall down. Historical Fact: The film portrays the league as initially unpopular and unprofitable, until demeaning gimmicks are used to attract male audiences. In reality, the league was popular and profitable from the start, largely because it played in towns in the upper Midwest that had no way of watching a live baseball game. Eventually, the league grew into a ten-team two-division league. The advent of televised baseball games in the early fifties, however, would lead to the demise in the popularity of the league. The storyline was inspired by the career of baseball legend Dottie Collins. During World War II, Collins played for the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, and pitched seventeen shutouts during her six-year career.

Lori Petty had a great career in the 80’s and 90’s. Actors aren’t obliged to keep going at the same pace for decades and decades, it’s natural she took a break. She was well known for several other movies in that era like Free Willy and Point Break. She’s had roles in TV recently like Orange Is The New Black.

For the record... this WAS a summer movie. It came out on my 11th birthday, July 1st, 1992 (part of the reason I love it so much). And FYI that WAS Tea in the charm school scene (she was Racine's First Baseman), and the charm school sequence was real (the real players had to Helena Rubenstejn classes at night)

One of my favorite movies of all time. Fun fact the scene filmed at the baseball hall of fame had the real original AAGPBL players.

Another good Tom Hanks movie “That Thing You Do”. He plays a small a part and directs.

Fun fact. The actress playing Alice that got the huge bruise, that wasn't makeup. That was a real bruise, ouch.

I can't believe that no one has suggested the greatest baseball movie ever - Bull Durham. If you haven't seen it yet, it is definitely worth a watch. It was the first of Kevin Costner's baseball trilogy.

80’s and 90’s comedies just hit different

A heartfelt moment with Dottie and her husband... Jimmy: WHY AM I THE ONLY PERSON ON THIS BUS?!

One of my all time favorite Tom Hanks movie is the 1986 classic "The Money Pit" It's Soooo damn funny!!!!!!!! If you have never seen it.. I recommend that you watch/react to it. It's a fun time!!

To answer your question: yes, the AAWPBL was a real thing. I had to honor to meet some of the Racine Belles players in Cooperstown, NY, back in 1996. Fantastic experience!

It was actually called the AAGPBL it lasted 11 years. And unlike what they said in the movie, the league didn't really struggle at first, One of their key strategies: most of the teams were in mid-size. cities in the mid-west TV was still a new thing in the 40s most people didn't have one so for a lot of the mid-sized cities, it was the only way to see a professional game live. By 1954 TVs were more common so the interest in the league died down.

When they were on the farm, the girls were playing softball. Softball is pitched underhand and the ball is bigger. Baseball is pitched overhand and the ball is significantly smaller. But, there _were_ female baseball leagues all over the Midwest because they had no access to seeing big league baseball games. Part of what is highlighted in the movie is the difference between playing softball and baseball. The women had to practically learn a new sport to participate. SO happy you are doing a Reaction to this great baseball movie!

I Love this movie!!! one of my all-time faves!!! Fun FAct: EVERY person acting in this movie HAD to know how to play baseball!! they even have a few filler girls that are from real leagues in the 90s............ If you have the time I really recommend watching the Commentary over the movie!! I learned so much about this movie!! whenever I see a great movie I always look to see if there's a movie commentary and watch it :)

Great reaction this is still one of my favourite sports movies. The smile that Dottie gives when Kit is being carried around cheering after she drops the ball was so well done because it can be seen as a fair and square proud moment or a smile that she finally let Kit be #1 and get the glory. 50/50 of viewers will sway either way.

Two movies about hockey that are worth watching: "Miracle" - about a historic game of US vs USSR "Mystery, Alaska" - a fun movie about a town who's life is centered around hockey. Russell Crowe leads. "Wimbledon" -romantic sports movie about tennis. Paul Bettany stars.

Kurt Russell played Coach Brooks so well. All of the input from the team and the cinematography on the ice is pretty epic the way it was shot.

Big, Splash, Saving Mister Banks, Cast Away, The Green Mile & of course Forest Gump

I always thought this was such a good film. Really, everyone was excellent. I think Lori Petty, Rosie and Madonna stole it, but Tom Hanks and Gena Davis anchor it nicely.

The play-by-play guy is actor David Lander who played Squiggy from Lenny and Squiggy on the Laverne & Shirley show.

And the solid male dancer in uniform played the big ragoo in Laverne and Shirley. The actress why played Marla Hooch actually was hitting that ball in the gym (it was inside because it was raining…). She had played softball for a long time so knew how to bat and hit.

The ladies from the movie just did a reunion interview and the question was asked did she drop the ball on purpose at the end she would not say yes or no

The guy dancing wirh Madonna was Eddie Mekka. He played Carmine (aka the Big Ragoo) on Laverne and Shirley. He was an excellent Singer and Dancer. One of Baseball Stadium Announcers calling the game was David Lander who played Squiggy on Laverne and Shirley. The Baseball Scout was played by Jon Lovitz (from Saturday Night Live). Many of his insults and funny comments weren't in the script and were adlibs by Lovitz himself. Jimmy Duggan (Tom Hank's character) was based on the Real Manager of the Rockford Peaches former Star Player Jimmy Foxx. Kit (Lori Petty) has a Cult following as the title character in the movie Tank Girl. The horrible Bruise on the leg of the Actress was REAL and took over a year to heal. BTW - That was Téa Leoni.

Tom Hanks as Jimmy Dugan. One of my all time favorite movie characters.

Madonna was great in this movie, but my favorite movies with her are "Body of Evidence", "Dick Tracy" and "Evita".

Underrated Tom Hanks movie: That Thing You Do

This is actually a true story. Not a Tom Hanks movie but you should check out an old TV show he was in, it’s called Bosom Buddies. He and his friend dress as women to get an apartment in a building for women only.

We have been asking that question for 30 years

Nice reaction to one of my all time favorite movies.

OK. I love this movie. Even when I am not a big fan of a genre (like you with sports movies) being a really good movie transcends genre. This is loosely based on real events. The league owner was really Wrigley, of Wrigley gum and Wrigley Field. But the writers changed the names because it was as much fiction as fact. I used to use the line "There's no crying in baseball" when I thought one of my kids needed to toughen up and stop crying, even when there was no baseball involved. The line was so catchy they started to say it to each other. You haven't lived till you've seen a 7 year old tell a crying 4 year old, "There's no crying in baseball". But that just shows how good the writing was.

"Big" is an early Tom Hanks vehicle. Definitely a fantasy movie, but there are some very emotional scenes about growing up and learning who you are.

Bruise on the leg is real.

My favorite sports movie is Breaking Away (1979) young Dennis Quaid, Daniel Stern, Jackie Earl Haley and starting Dennis Christopher with fantastic support from Paul Dooley and Barbara Barrie.

If you enjoy vintage period pieces and baseball, I think you would love "8 men out". Really good and authentic with a great cast. It's about the 1919 Chicago White (black) Sox.

Damn, Madonna was something back in the day.

Good reaction and synopsis. I think you'd also like to react to Kevin Costner in "For Love Of The Game". But one of my favorites is the true baseball story starring Dennis Quaid in "The Rookie" which is the story of Jim Morris.

You should watch the marvel series Agent Carter for another dose of women in the 40's, it's a short, sweet and fun series, that actually has Haley Atwell aka Peggy and Dominic Cooper aka young Howard reprising their roles from the first Captain America! While I'm sure there were a few hecklers, in real life there was tremendous public support for the league!

A great Tom Hanks movie is "Sleepless in Seattle." Yeah, it's a romcom, but it's really really good.

Besides this my other 2 favorite sports movies are "Remember the Titans" and "Rudy"!!!! Both are excellent, inspiring, and based on true stories.

This was the birth of women’s professional baseball. They’re playing softball at the start, not baseball. Underhand pitching is softball. The older women who were the actual players appear at the end of the film. That big strawberry on that actresses leg is real. Penny put it in the film. The actress said it took about a year to fade. The voices of the older Kit and Dotti is made better because Geena and Lori dubbed the older voices, so it still sounds like them.

The actresses portraying Dottie and Kit as older ladies were the same ones portraying them as young women. (Geena Davis and Lori Petty).

5 of 5 for this old (former, really) baseball fan. This is so poignant because it's real American sporting history, even if the plot is fictionalized, and the last bit with the irl old ladies playing out there was sentimental in all the best ways. If you like redemption stories, another sports movie worth seeing is the great film "Hoosiers". Imitated a billion times, never duplicated.

You're right that the story is fictional, but many of the ladies playing at the end were some of the original professional girls baseball league.

Great reaction David!!! I'm not a huge sports fan but I liked this movie when I first watched it with relatives in California back in the early 2000s.

10:55 well done. This is the first reactor to emphasize the correct approach of historical perspective. It is a vice for almost every reactor nowadays to judge the past with the current “view of the world” and so many get uselessly triggered by references to genre and basically just “jokes” and can’t enjoy the fact that those behaviors are actually portrayed to make fun of certain ways that are now just different…

Great reaction! If you want some more, the film actually had a TV adaptation. It didn't make a mark, but you can see the handful of episodes made here on KZread.

There's a new Amazon series about to premier. One of the ladies from the original league used the press conference as a Chan e to come out - at 92!

Yeah, those people in the 40's were so old-fashioned in their attitudes about women. Good thing we've advanced so far since then. Can you imagine not having women's professional baseball today?

The HUGE bruise on the girls thigh was actually real no make up effects needed..

Great reaction I'm happy to see you react to this movie. Jon Lovitz killed it with his performance, with seeing old newsreels from back then and classic movies from that time I think Jon Lovitz nailed it. But of course everyone did beautifully in this film, what a cast. Tried my hand at softball not baseball but I didn't have what it takes though I got complimented on my base running but I did lack the skill and what I thought of as common sense to play the game. If it wasn't hard everyone would do it, indeed yes. Oh and to me the look on Jimmy Dugans face said it all, he knew what Dottie just did. Dottie is a tough cookie and that's the understatement of the century on my part.

The Long Kiss Goodnight with Samuel Jackson and Gina Davis is a amazing action movie with lots of humor as well. Should watch this gem

If you like Gina Davis, check out Cutthroat Island. She’s a pirate! I fell in love with the movie, totally out there but a really fun ride.

For a sports movie that is all about playing for love, check The Replacements, football players on strike so a team is made up of has beens, never was, and non football athletes.

Just to confirm, that is Geena Davis and Lori Petty in very impressive age makeup. I believe the characters are fictional, but the history of the league is accurate. But don't quote me on that. So many great performances. I love that even Madonna gets to flex her dramatic chops a bit because she's a very underrated and talented actress. Penny Marshall brought us so many gems.

Actually it was not Geena Davis and Lori Petty in age make up. Different actresses played the older versions. Lynn Cartwright played “older Dottie” and Kathleen Butler played “older Kit”. Great casting.
