A Home Made Tire Changer (Small Tires)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Well it must be the season for tire issues. I got a flat on the front of my John Deere 180 tractor. I used an idea from Gord Baker and it helped a lot in removing and placing the tire on the wheel.

I put a tube in my lawn tractor's front tire this weekend thanks to your very helpful video! I also threaded a nut onto the Valve Stem to keep it from disappearing back into the hole, and left it there in case it wants to wander later. While filling the tube, I heard the alarming hiss of leaking air, and feared that the new tube had failed - only to realize it was the air escaping from between the tire and the tube before the beads had fully seated - whew! Cheers!

Good job. But a couple of ideas from an old tire service guy of many years: 1) Pull the valve stem out so the tube will collapse enough to pull it out. 2) As mentioned by someone else, mark the alignment of the valve with the tire before you break the bead so you'll know where to look for a nail or something on the inside. 3) You should burnish off the tube with sand paper or something equally rough to roughen the rubber so the vulcanizing glue can get a better drip and it remove debris (like soapstone) from the tube too. Then clean it off thoroughly. 4) Squeeze all the air out of the tube before you put it back into the tire so it goes in easier. 5) Once the tube is in the tire, put the valve through the hole and add enough air (with the valve core replaced) to round out the tube so it's against the tire and away from the wheel. This will help keep it from getting pinched when you pry the tire back over and it'll prevent it from wrinkling and creasing inside the tire when you inflate it. Nice to see people doing their own work these days. Not enough of that anymore. Good for you!

I was wrasslin puttin a tire back on and out of frustration looked on line. Others had suggestions NONE OF THEM WORKED. Making a hub mount from a long bolt ( all thread) was a terrific idea. The vise grips and pushing the tire towards the center really helped. Making the stationary wheel mount made short work of two tires in a FEW miinutes. Had been messing with it all morning.

knighthawk86855 Wow, I was just thinking of how many times I had to patch holes in my bicycle tires as a kid. I used the very same repair kit you described but we used to put glue around the edge of the patch after it was glued down and lite it on fire for a few seconds to make a better seal. The glue would burn but it wouldnt damage the tire. We got them kits all the time from Western Auto. We patched back then not buy another one because we were poor as dirt

I have a tyre sealant with fibres in a 20ltr drum and a calibrated pump. i just remove the inner valve and give measured pumps of the sealant according to tyre size. inflate the tyre and within two revolutions the hole is sealed. works on tubed and tubless tyres and can seal a hole of 13mm diameter in tubeless tyres. as for joe public who doesnt have this stuff, the tyre changer idea works really well. awesome video to get people out of a sticky situation. well done.

I use to have a 180 and it had 2-ply tires on it. I dealt with flats on that bassard all the time. Finally I was tired of screwing with them and found some 4-ply tires on Amazon. After installing the new tires I NEVER had another flat for the last 4 years I had the machine. I found a set for the rear as well and absolutely loved them. When I need tires on my new machine I will be going to heavier ply tires again....

@@BrucesShop Nope, I'm not knocking tubes, just week tires. Going to the 4-ply tires ended my trouble with flats... What started all my flat tire woes was having my roof removed and a new one put on. The original was done with staples and down in the Florida sand, they tend to hide well. Right up until you drive over them with your lawn tractor.........

Had to change couple of tires on my riding lawnmower and I was looking all over the place for someone who could do this for me, but to no avail. Finally thought about the same method as in this video - threaded rod, few nuts and washers - and it worked perfectly, changed those tires myself in no time. And don't forget vise-grip pliers - there's almost no way to mount tire on a 4" rim w/o them while working alone.

I have to say, after watching your video, I went out and bought the same pieces to make it. Only cost total of $10 at Lowes. Put together and works great in holding the rim, the hardest part. Just a side note, to break any bead easily, put tie, rubber only under car tire. Back up slowly, pops like a balloon. Just a thought. Thanks to whomever gave you the idea. If you buy anything similar, it would be at Freight Harbor for $79.

Bruce, I like the idea for the tire changer. A bolt in the vise is a great idea. You can pick up a 4 Piece heavy duty pry bar set at Habor Freight for 9.99. They come 8, 12, 18 and 24 inch length, believe me the come in handy some times. I have been working on these engines for the last 20 years. A shop I worked in, we use to use the pry bars alone on the bench to break the bead. It was much harder that way, but your way is nice there. Thanks for the idea to you and Gord.

That makes the job easier, I have been doing this for years using my knees and feet plus a small wooden block that fit in the center of rim. I use a couple small pry bars and soap to lubricate the bead. Will try using my vise next time, I may have all the necessary hardwares to get this done.

I got a similar changer I made from the rear axle of an MTD mower(that had the flats on the end). I had a machine shop at work so we milled the flat all the down the axle, but you could use a grinder and do it. I made a flat plate about 4" square from some 3/8" plate with a 3/4" hole right in the middle. On the very end of the axle I welded about a 2" square of 3/8" plate and it rests on the square throat of the vise. Then the 4" square plate with the 3/4" holes is slid down and welded. It is rock solid in the big vise on a steel table. I use spacers up and down the shaft that I bought in the hitch pin section of Tractor Supply. I usually put one bushing over the shaft, then the wheel, and more bushings until they barely stick over the top end of the axle where I use a thick homemade washer and a grade 8 bolt in the end of the axle to tighten it down On a MTD rear wheel you don't need anything to keep it from turning the axle sticks up 5 or 6" to give you something to pivot around with your tire tool. I use about a 24"long round bar. Works great!

I remembered watching this in the past and instead of just clamping the bolt head in the vise I welded the bolt to a piece of angle iron so no matter what it stays in place in the vise. It worked pretty good and I welded some 3/8 bolts to the nut to act as handles so I can tighten it by hand.

Loved the clamp trick, I usually just wrestle it with a couple of HF tire irons. Some of these little wheels are a BEAST! Super cheap no mount too, a d I do have a bench vise ( and a HF vise that broke due to Chinese steel) and I've squeezed tires in that to break the bead. Otherwise I'd drive my truck across it,

I tried this the other day, But the six inch bolt kept falling over sideways. I wound up just putting it on my workbench, And wrestling it from there, which was a job. Also the glue didn't hold the first time, So i redid the tube patch, And placed it on a piece of flat wood, With a car battery on top of it, and let it dry for 18 hours, 18 hours Only because that's how long it took to get in the mood to finish it. I don't know what the dry time is on tire glue. But it worked, And three days later the patch is still tight. But considering i've never patched a tube before, I would have to call this a success. Thanks Bruce.

Well done! FYI, what you removed is the core of the Schrader valve. The Schrader valve is the entire assembly including the stem, core, etc. If you think you may be dismounting and mounting tires every once in a while, you may want to think of picking up a set of small tire spoons. They're inexpensive. Amazon or even Harbor Freight as them for a few bucks and they're less likely to damage a tire or inner tube. One more thing: You don't have to remove the core to set the bead with an inner tube but it doesn't hurt. But it's almost necessary when popping the bead with a tubeless tire.

It's a good idea to mark the tire where the valve is in relation to the tire. That should give you an idea where to look for whatever caused the leak. After you find the leak on the tube when you get it out, lay it on the tire so the valve is on the mark you made on the sidewall and carefully feel in there for a nail, staple, even a needle or anything else that punctured it. Use a waded up paper towel or shop rag to sweep around. Saves the fingers. If it's a really big hole, you should put a patch on the inside of the tire so the tube doesn't find it's way out the hole, I've seen that happen. Then patch the tube and you should be all set.

Bruce did you know that there is a correct and incorrect direction to install a snap ring and an "E" clip? When the spring steel is stamped on the one side the edges are rounded from the stamping procedure and the under side is still sharp. IT is best to install the snap ring (E clip) with the sharp edge toward the direction of removal. IT holds in place with more strength and is less likely to slip off.

Well that just makes sense. Remember i did not spend my life in a shop I spent it on the road installing electronic switching equipment. I do know there is a sharp side and a round side to every washer and that may be a specific way on the equipment. EG do you want the washer to dig in or just hold without deformation. THANKS!!!

I was running an aerator the other day and snapped the clip on one of my front wheels. It was worn a little bit. I replaced both because the other side wasn't far behind. Anytime you pull a wheel, it's best to clean it and throw a little GM grease on there.

Get two tire irons , put them in at the same place and then put one on each side of the bolt and hold one and just pull the other in the opposite direction and voila the bead is off . Different story to put back on though . Remember to put a small amount of air into the tube when putting back on to prevent it from getting pinched . Putting some baby powder in the tire before putting the tube in or on the tube will allow the tube to inflate properly .
