How to change lawn tractor tires, How to change small tires, DIY small tractor tire change

WARNING! DO NOT USE FLAMMABLE SOLVENTS TO MOUNT TIRES! it is dangerous and do not do it yourself!
My front tires are shot, so I ordered Kenda Terra-trac tires with more tread! Here's my version of the whole process from start to finish with all the problems I encountered and how I fixed them!

I used your idea but modified it some and it works awesome! 1st mod I used a 18” long piece 5/8 threaded rod. 2nd I mounted it closer to end of bench so half the tire hangs off to give you room to work the tire. 3rd I cut some pipe to slide over threaded rod to use as a fulcrum plus you don’t have to screw the hold down nut The whole length of the rod sticking up. Still a work in progress thanks for the idea.

Bob, I realize that I'm about 5 years late to the party but at first I thought that the threaded rod was a great idea. Then I realized that you were going off in the wrong direction. Recently I had the same problem with flat tires on my lawn tractor/mower. So I decided that inner tubes were the way to go. Also, I went to KZread for the best way to do it. 97% of the videos suggested the Harbor Freight mini tire changer. It's $60 well spent. Also, spending a few dollars for inner tubes which you most likely you needed to put in the tires by now anyway would have saved a lot of work. I speak from experience. Just one old man's opinion. God bless and have a wonderful day.

If your threaded rod was a foot longer, you could lean your tire spoon against the rod after you pop the bead over the rim and spin the tire spoon around the rod and it works just like a tire machine pulling the bead over the rim's edge. Reverse the process to put the new tire on.

Huge thanks for the C-Clamp idea. Fought for 45min to no avail. Used 2 C-Clamps and had the tire on in 3 minute. Many thanks

If you use a pair of vice grips plyers on one side of the rim it will hold the tire down so you can walk the bead on

When tubeless tires came out for semi trucks in mid 70's we used ether (known as starting fluid). We sprayed inside tire ,stood way back and thew lit stick matches at it. Dangerous as hell but it worked. Tire & rim went in air about 6 inches. Need ear protection and safety glasses all dust and dirt flying. We were in out 20's need I say more....

The "Trick" I spoke of was using a little C clamp or vice grip to hold the edge of the tire from slipping off when installing the second bead, you'll see that on the second tire mount.

Seems it would have been easier if you'd have tightened the nut so the wheel wouldn't turn....then used a long screwdriver and worked it around the bolt and lifted the tire right over the rim.

As I look at the beginning when I use a clamp to break the bead, I should have hooked the clamp under the edge of the bench and it would have worked even better!

Once the tire is off the rim ( if you plan to use an inner tube ) take a few minutes and drill four or five holes through the part between the hub and the beads , now put bolts through the holes, I use 3/8ths put on lock washes and tighten nut on the bolts , now take a grinder with a 1/8th cut off disc and take off the weld holding the two half's of the wheel together and presto , the wheel comes apart undo the bolts , replace the tire and tube easy as pie , no more prying till your eyes pop out.and no more tubes being damaged while you try to pry the tire back on the rims . Believe it or not , it only takes a few minutes per wheel and boy does it ever make tire changes or tube repairs easier and a hundred times faster . And no sweat . Make sure you put the bolts back in of course lol

I haven't attempted this yet on my lawn tractor but the only thing I see that I would definitely not do that you're doing is using that soapy water to install the new tire on the rim. You know, you're trapping all that moisture in there between the rim and tire and it's not gonna go anywhere, Till it starts corroding

Use carb cleaner instead of lacquer thinner. Also use a tire gauge to check air pressure.

To help put air in the tire try some Vaseline or axle grease around the bead it will help seal it from air escaping
