A good Chinese 4WD? 2024 GWM Tank 300 review: Ultra petrol | Cheaper Toyota Prado alternative tested

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The 2024 GWM Tank 300 is quite new to the Australian market, but it's quickly made itself known as a tough-looking 4WD with hybrid availability and, more importantly, a relatively small price tag.
But, of course, if the Tank 300 is going to be a genuine alternative to the hugely popular Toyota LandCruiser Prado, it's got to have more than just looks, an efficient powertrain and relative affordability on its side.
So, in this expert review, CarsGuide Contributing Journalist Marcus Craft puts the Tank 300's petrol-powered Ultra variant through its paces off-road to see if it has what it takes to keep up off the beaten track.

    If I had the money, I'd buy this. And happily chuckle to anyone who thinks it's about a chinese invasion of some sort. yeah, I see those other comments... my grandmother said the same of japanese products in the 80s and gee whizz, it's still Australia with no threat on that one.... I can't understand people being so butthurt about so much.

    Personally, it's more about not supporting a government that is doing a genocide and colonising the world through wolf diplomacy. Nothing against their product quality per se, more a stance against a government that has killed over 5 million people and oppressing them in internment camps. Personally don't want to support that and I do my best not to buy from Chinese owned and try and buy products made in other countries like VN, India etc (when it's possible)

    @bencameron3009 Actually, China only rejected our barley because they appeased/sacked u/flattered Trump with an agreement to buy US barley and rejected Aussie wine because orisons had insulted them. If you know anything about Chinese history you would understand they are rightly passed off about ignorant westerners treating them very badly. The barley trade has been restored and the Labor government is currently negotiating a relaxing of restrictions on wine and seafood.. China has remained our biggest export partner by far. Business just goes on despite the previoux stupid LNP. Meantime our expaorts of minerals and food products have roared along so it was always about treating a major power and trading partner in a fair and reason

    People keep questioning the reliability and longevity of these cars coming out of China, but they forget that China with 1.2 billion people and the world's biggest middle class is one of the biggest car markets and the best brands in the world. What they are exporting is the best models which have been tried and tested. In comparison, we used to buy plenty of Holdens and Fords made just for Australia's tiny population and we were happy with them.

HUGE cult following in the making . Hybrid on the way . EVERYTHING you get in a car 3 to 4 times the price included - looks the goods . Modifying is fun and there’s many company’s coming up with products for this too . There’s pessimism , there’s optimism , CHOOSE .

    Someone needs to mention the load capacity of these. 2 people and a weekend worth of camp gear, maybe a fridge and you're incredibly close to being overloaded. Forget about towing anything as well

  • @ianweal3081

    @ianweal3081

    10 ай бұрын

    Why forget about towing with it? Yes, it would be less than ideal but the figures actually stack up favourably. The motor has enough grunt, more infact than some more recognised vehicles and it's towing capacity is on par @ 2500kg. Let's compare it to a vehicle utilised by many to tow with. Nissan GU Patrol ZD30 Auto. Total outputs - 118kW, 354Nm Tow capacity - 2500kg. Payload - 582kg ÷ 7 seats = 83kg per person. Tank 300. Total outputs - 180kW, 380Nm. More Tow capacity - 2500kg. - Equal Payload - 440kg ÷ 5 seats = 88 kg per person, greater than Patrol. Cargo Space also less than a Patrol, hence unlikeliest to be overloaded of the two vehicles. Now take into account the previous Isuzu Mux's & Toyota Prado's, both had less power outputs, Prado equal tow capacity @2500kg, Mux payload better @700kg as was tow capacity at 3000kg, yet they were utilised by the masses to tow any combination of trailers, campers, caravans. Tank is totally comparable but I'd agree, less than ideal.

  • @dpfishn

    10 ай бұрын

    @@ianweal3081 fair enough but my thought was if you're towing say 2T, half the payload is there and if you and a mate are on the large side you'd nearly be overloaded with nothing else in or on the car
