Tough new Chinese 4x4 takes on off-road SUV champion 👉 Full Review: www.carsales.com.au/editorial...
It’s China versus Japan and new 4x4 challenger versus evergreen off-road champion as the 2023 GWM Tank 300 Ultra takes on the 2023 Toyota Prado Kakadu.
They might have very different origins, powertrains and price tags, but both of these large SUVs are fighting for the same buyers with a rugged ladder frame, generous ground clearance and a proper four-wheel drive system with low-range ratios.
Can the tough new GWM Tank 300 beat Australia’s favourite large SUV at its own game? Feann Torr has the verdict.

In the first year Tank300 launched in China, the price of Prado in the Chinese second hand carmarket dropped like 20%. People are tired of prices that overflow a car's value.

The Australian people should not reject the arrival of Chinese cars, because competition will lead to improvement. Even if you don't like Chinese cars, it doesn't matter. Their arrival will lower the prices of other cars you like to a certain extent. At least they can no longer raise prices as crazy as they want.

I am almost sure that you only turned on Lane Keep, which will only pull you back when you close to side, so it will keep bouncing left and right, you need to turn on Lane Center, it will always stay in the center of the lane, i have tried it, it works well. The Prado is almost 30% more expensive to service over the same 3-year period. I know it a Car show, but simple math's to work out. The Tank is destined to be a cult classic like the Little Suzuki Jimny. Jan And Ian will be happy with the Prado crossing Aust with their 3T Jayco. And good on them. But once these Tanks start getting aftermarket parts they will be like Wranglers. Well Done GWM for having the nads to build something like this.

Btw how could you judge the maintenance cost based on 3 year period when the Tank got longer warranty?! Let's revisit this topic when the tank got to 10 years mark. It is surprising that you chose the top spec Prado but didn't test against the top spec Tank 300 which is the hybrid option that adds heaps especially power but is still 30-40% less. Plus I know the 500 is aimed at the Landcruiser and Patrol but the Tank 400 hybrid would be my pick as a direct competitor with the non-luxury, highly offroad capable 70 series. It is astonishing that GWN doesn't see a market for a tougher, offroad tourer, heavier load carrier/tow vehicle in Australia when the sales of 70s and Rams are booming when the Tank 400 adds hybrid power, capability and convenience that the 300 and 500 are more unsuited to. Forget the inner city numpties who are spoilt for choice but rural, remote Australia needs tougher, more utilitarian load carriers that mining industry buys and relies on, most industries rely on along with adventurers and Grey Nomads. Hybrids done well will work great, for many reasons.

From what I've see in other reviews, the tank has on road calibrated traction control. If you go off road you need to activate options. Apparently "Pot Hole" is the off road traction control calibration. Select it and the traction control kicks in allowing you to climb on undgelating surfaces with total ease, braking the correct wheel at the correct time keeping momentum going. Should have tried that, yes using the toys on offer. If that lets you down you can always revert to diff locks. Mind you, on scably stuff, just go diff locks to avoid drive line damage, front CV's are vunerable to shock damage.

Strange that 'Pothole' mode was edited out of the video showing the drive modes. In fact every Australian review I've seen avoids using this mode for offset moguls which is exactly what it is meant for. Almost like we can't allow the Tank to show how good it's traction control actually is and that it has to rely on its lockers.

I have a Chinese friend who works at a Toyota 4S store in Guangdong Province. He told me that the business situation this year is very bad. In addition to the economic environment, the main reason is the invasion of off-road vehicles produced in China. He said that because the number of Chinese people on vacation is actually increasing, the demand for off-road vehicles is actually rising in China, especially going to places like Tibet and Xinjiang. It is very difficult without off-road vehicles, but Japanese off-road vehicles are the most popular off-road vehicles in China. The market as a whole declined. He did not say which specific Chinese off-road vehicle hit the Japanese off-road vehicle market, but he said that it was not just vehicles like the Tank 300, but also many Chinese off-road vehicles, such as the Beijing BJ40, and even electric off-road vehicles.

The Tank 300 is not made for travelling with a load of adults, which is disappointing for something called a tank. Today I was reading about the light Mazda 2 hatch, and just out of interest I checked it's payload. For the auto the GVM is 1,543kg and Kerb weight is 1,109kg, thereby it's payload is 434kg.
