It does. If you don't feel sad during Grandma's little talk about missing her late husband, then you're heartless. Unfortunately, similar things have happened in my family. My paternal grandparents married when he got back from the war in 1945, and remained married until her death in 2004. He was never the same after that. All he wanted was to be with her until he died in 2009.

Last Christmas, that scene hit me harder than before - my grandpa passed away last July, and I swear grandma Arbuckle could be describing him to a T. Even the picture of his late husband could pass for a cartoon version of my grandpa, and he was exactly one of those laconic, gruff type of old men. He taught me how to fish, how to ride a bicycle and how to change tires and do an oil change. I miss him
RIP to the great Pat Caroll. Her Christmas speech reminds me of what it could have been like when my own grandma had her first Christmas since my grandpa’s passing. It’s so powerful…probably one of the best individual speeches in a Christmas special ever.

Even now as a 47 year old man, that fireside scene with Grandma and Garfield causes me to bawl like a baby. It especially became poignant to me when I lost my father in 2016. That was a hard Christmas to get through, but this special definitely helped.

Grandma with Garfield in the rocking chair is my favorite, it actually makes me tear up, I had a cat and my Grandmother was the only person she would sit like that with when we visited. My Grandmother passed away 4 yrs ago in February and this makes me think of her. I love that I am not the only one who loves this scene.
I’m sure Chaplain winking at the end was completely coincidental, but that was a nice touch.
Fun Fact: Garfield usually takes place in Muncie, IN, where Jim Davis works as faculty at Ball State University. Grandma Arbuckle makes mention of a gravy competition in Greene County, IN, which is west of Bloomington, Indiana. This suggests the Arbuckle farm is in Greene County.

The Garfield Christmas Special & The Muppets Family Christmas are the two most criminally underrated Christmas programs ever made. The Muppets one is difficult to find (except on KZread) due to a complicated situation related to the licensing rights of the music used in it, along with how all the Henson creations got farmed out to multiple different owners, ie, The Muppets is owned by Disney, while Sesame Street & Fraggle Rock is owned by HBO.

I love how they matched their voices to how Chaplain and Buster reacted and the faces they made! They are both so cute.
Great review. 100% nostalgic. My sister and I could recite this, and did, from memory. Grandma in this reminded us of our great grandmother. Spitfire of an old woman. I still remember the Christmas when we both realized the grandmother was mourning her deceased husband for the first time. Now this with be the first Christmas our grandma gets to tell that story. I will do my best to be the best Garfield for my grandma. Ok, let’s not end on a sad note. Merry Christmas to you Nostalgia Critic and to the whole crew and your families (speedy recovery Rob)! I love how one of my favorites is also a good one for you too. Again, MERRY CHRISTMAS!
Wow I just saw this with a friend for the first time like, a week ago. Its surprisingly good. And deeper than expected. There's actually a few lines and hints that not only is grandpa dead, but it's recent. She's talking about eating healthier, working out to be in better shape, is acting eccentric partially to hide her pain, and when Jon greats her and asks how she's doing, she respond "oh I'm holding up fine... considering". To start it seems that last part is just her talking about being old, but with hindsight, she's saying she's holding up alright considering her husband is gone.

@@avosmash2121 the whole special feels so much like you are walking into one of many, many christmas' and Christmas traditions with this family. The story the dad tells is a great example of it, you can see the tradition starting with it being a story he tells the kids and everyone loves it, then as the kids get older you can imagine the dad enjoying it and the kids being annoyed as he tells them this childish story in a goofy way as they have to listen. And as it turned when the kids got older and the dad started feeling silly doing this child story so seriously for adults, as Jon and Doc Boy get to force him to act like they ar elittle kids as they revel in making him do it full blast. Its an adorable microcosm of what us a special that truly brings you along on just... another christmas on the farm.
When asked about Bill Murray voicing Garfield in 2004 Jim Davis had this to say: “It was because of Bill Murray’s attitude [that he was cast],” Davis tells us. “It wasn’t really so much his voice. It was the fact that he embodies the attitude that Garfield has always displayed in the strip. Lorenzo [Music] obviously wasn’t a choice since he passed away years ago, and when the producers said, ‘Bill Murray would like to do the voice,’ I thought, ‘Oh, cool.’ My biggest concern about doing a CGI Garfield with live action was that people wouldn’t buy into the fact that this was our Garfield-the Garfield we’d known all these years. But I thought that as soon as they heard Bill Murray’s voice they’d get it. There will be that emotional tag going with his voice. That will establish the fact that, ‘Yes, this character has attitude.'''
I loved the incorporation of the kitties. I think the filming was very well done considering cats do what they want when they want. I was really surprised how well Chaplin's stop, turn head back, wink, and walk away was done. I can't imagine how many takes that took.
The real Christmas magic is that I just realized the cats' names are inspired by (I suspect): Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton... 🤣 🤣

@@louisduarte8763 The 2nd christmas special I think? Which I believe was in 2009?
This has been and will forever be my favorite Christmas special. I watch it every year without fail. It originally aired right before my first Christmas. Watching it this year has been especially hard, as it is my first Christmas without my dad. He passed away in July, and our shared love of Garfield was always a special part of our bond. Grandma’s speech with Garfield in her lap really pulled at my heart this time. I miss my dad so much!! But I’m thrilled to see my favorite animated feline get some love and recognition and I know my dad would be too!!
This special has become one of many things I think of when remembering my sister during Christmas. We watched it every year and would quote it randomly to each other. I never imagined as a kid just how much the monologue about missing someone during the holidays would strike a chord with me later on.
Lorenzo Music is a legend, Garfields voice is iconic to a whole general of kids, myself included. Its just perfect its how I always heard it in my head when I read the comics even before I ever saw the cartoon.
Buster's "I'm so done with this" face was unexpectedly adorable. ^_^
Honestly, Grandma's speech reminds me of how much I truly miss Grandpa. Don't get me wrong, I miss him year-round, but... It's something about the warm, fuzzy, and inviting spirit of the holidays that really remind me of him. He'd could be hard as coal at times, but... Whenever it was the holidays... He'd let his inner diamond shine bright. ✨✨✨
I never watched this special, but knowing about the classic era of Garfield cartoons, I knew that the music numbers were always incredible and this special continued that trend. What lacks in animation they compensate in good story, scenes and emotions throughout this cozy adventure at the Arbuckle's family farm. I never knew Pat Carrol was in this special, but her speech was really heartbreaking and that comparison you made about the different animations and colors is very interesting. Last year, I made an essay about what I consider the most important aspects about creating a movie, and one of the points I did was the Location of the filming, where some scenarios, combined with the right colors, could support the development of the story. Colors are important because they can help the directors/animators transmit the right emotion of each scene to the viewer. That dark blue of the snowy night really helped us feel that we wanted to be close to Grandma Arbuckle, and Garfield was the perfect contrast, thanks to his warm color fur; like a hopeful flame to heat her sad heart.
First off Rob I hope you get better soon. The Christmas episodes of the Nostalgia critic are honestly sometimes the only highlight I have this time of year. I actually watched this special for the first time a couple years ago and it's become a traditional watch for me every year now, along with Elf and Arthur Christmas! We're all grownups now and it's been ages since all of us got together for the holidays...sigh...

This brought back a ton of memories. I actually grew up with this cartoon in the early 2000s, as a kid I had a DVD with a bunch of Garfield holiday specials. I actually had no idea until now that this was such a well-known and beloved special. I always assumed as a kid that it was some cheaply made obscure thing because of an obvious low budget, but I always loved it as a kid and watching this reminded me why remember it so fondly. That night scene with grandma always hit me so hard back then, and even harder as an adult.
The late Pat Caroll officially made the perfect choice to play Ursula in Disney's The Little Mermaid.
One of my all time favorite Christmas specials. That scene with Garfield and Grandma still gets me every single time.
There used to be a Garfield Minus Garfield version of the special that played Hello Zepp in the final moments and was hilarious. I loved this special (the actual version) growing up. Revisiting it as an adult, I’m still impressed and touched by it. It has some really poignant moments. Definitely a favorite for sure.

I've always been amazed at the great color language in this special, too. The way the snowy christmas morning looks in its yellows, blues and whites was striking even as a little kid. And how smart it was to slightly dim the light in the tree lighting thing so the sparkles were brighter (that part still makes me happy even today). The version we had on VHS was the one where Odie makes the present and the scene with the grandma shows the picture of the grandpa. Such a great little show.
