CUT CUT: A Garfield Christmas - 1987 vs 1991

Ойын-сауық

In the first episode of my new series "CUT CUT," I take a look at the changes that were made to A Garfield Christmas Special between the 1987 version and the 1991 version.

Awesome ep! This is one of my favorite Christmas shows and I own the Holiday Celebrations DVD. However we’ve also streamed it on Amazon and Apple over the years when the DVD was packed away and I just kept thinking I must not have remembered some scenes when I’d see an “added” one!

I'm so glad they restored the piano scene. it's my favorite scene in the show, and I can't hear "Oh, Christmas Tree" without hearing her "whoop-boop-be-doop" at the end.

Back when I was a young kid my most two favorite Christmas cartoons were a Garfield Christmas and a Charlie Brown Christmas, even though I'm 47 years old, I still enjoy them and I still love them to this day. They are like the most epic Christmas cartoons of all times.

I KNEW something was up when watching this again years later!! Our family always had a tape of the 1987 version. My mom was a master of recording tv shows. We had dozens of mixed show vhs tapes to watch as kids. An episode of dark wing duck followed by The Racoons and then Size Small Island or the multiple “Christmas shows” tapes. 25 years later, I’ve still kept them save. 😊

Those are amazing treasures you were able to hold on to. My parents made a holiday tape that would be stored away with the autumn/ winter decorations I always got to enjoy at the end of the year. Wish I still had it. Even the commercials that slipped through I'd die just to experience again. We were apart of a lucky generation.

On television, they would air 3 winter themed shorts beforehand with an intro by Michael Eisner. A Muppet Family Christmas was another one. It also makes it feel more bittersweet. When you lose someone you’ve shared your soul with, it feels like that part of your soul goes with them. You may find other things, other people to help you feel whole again, but that part of you is still gone, and there are times when you still feel it. This scene and Pat Caroll’s performance perfectly captures that.

It'd be nice to get a complete cut of this, using the 1991 version of Grandma and Garfield. Unless I am mistaken, the DVD has the 1991 version but didn't have the extra clips they trimmed from 1987

I can definitely see why they redid the scene where Garfield sat with Grandma. The 87 version just doesn't hit as hard with its color palette. 7:05 is the best example of the 87 version not working. A random shot of a fireplace just doesn't work, especially paired with Grandma's dialogue.

could you do superman 2 and 3? Superman 2 dvd releases seem to have an incomplete TV version. There's several scenes, like the ending with the police on the ice field, that only show up in the directors cut dvd even though they were on the tv version. And the superman 3 tv version (Which only has an australia dvd release due to the 4-pack accidentally using the theatrical version instead of the extended version) had a scene at the end where the pull Vera out of the rubble and her metal mask falls off and she's still alive, and this scene is not present in any dvd version that i've found,.

I grew up on the TV version of Superman 3. When I see the theatrical version, it feels incomplete, and it's missing some of my favorite lines: Brad: You know what they used to call me in high school? Gus: Brad? Guy: You have everything to live for. I know. I've just seen you. Lana: I can't go out with you tonight. No, I'm busy tomorrow night too. Brad: Doing what? Lana: I'll think of something.

Atleast we still have a DECENT Looking DVD of the '91 Version (even if it's not as good as the '87 version's 2 different remasters)

I have that out of print DVD with all 3 episodes (Thanksgiving is such a great episode too, although that's once again due to an excellent, hilarious appearance by Grandma), but IMO, the Halloween special is pretty meh. But I had noticed the missing piano scene in streaming the last few years, and always wondered. I wish they'd put them out on blu-ray or something though, as my DVD is well-loved, and may have a scratch or 2 on it that can cause playback issues...

The comic book version to me is the best version. Has a bunch of cut scenes not in the special like garfield "helping" john wrap gifts and odie getting gift wrapped by garfield and more chores scenes and dad turning off johns clock and that's why they sleep in on christmas morning and the barn scene has garfield stepping in. Odie can't get the gift fixed and garfield throws a corn cob and odie goes to check it out. Garfield drills the hole in and fixes the gift fast and runs out of sight and odie comes back and sees it fixed and odie being odie just goes with it and leaves. Putting the drill away garfield falls on the box and finds the letters. One act of kindness sets up grandmas happiness as garfield would have never found the cards if he didn't help odie. Why was this cut?
