Did the architect just roll a roulette wheel to decide where the front door should be?

I don't think that's a real house, at least not an American house. The space has French doors on one side, double slider doors on both sides and plain tile flooring... it looks very much like an sunroom or mother-in-law addition built off the BACK of the house. The owner could be renting that part of the house out.

I have seen other houses like this in the US. Sometimes it is because the lot shape constrained the design in odd ways. But I think there are so many oddly designed houses because some people make up their own plans willynilly and end up with builder-grade nonsense. Anyone who buys the house later might have no idea why the OG owners made the choices they did. I saw a "McMansion" designed house where the main front door opened to a sorta decahedron foyer with a high ceiling; they put a fancy piano there. 😅

My apartment is like this, I maintain it was designed by an idiot. Bigger problem my kitchen has five doors and a window, every single one with different moldings and heights. Try figuring out how to paint that room. For extra fun the doorway to my bathroom, the opening has a height of five feet and six inches so anyone from 5'10" and up smashes their head as they walk in and I have to pick up a cursing guy stretched out on the floor holding his head. 😂 There's also one step down into my kitchen hahahaha I didn't realize there was so many things, I could go on and on 😂

So many houses are not designed with the foresight that one day people will have to furnish them. The largest and arguably best bedroom in my house has two sets of french doors on the closet but spaced apart on one wall, two windows on the second wall, a bathroom door on the third, and entry on the fourth. The way it's spaced looks nice when it's empty, but the moment you try to place furniture, something is blocked. Or everything has to be pressed into the same corner. Lots of floor space though. I also hate it when windows are low. At least if they're a bit higher you can place a dresser or desk under it without blocking the light.
You need a place to change your shoes, to hang an umbrella, a coat, to put your bag, your keys, etc. A place for dirty outside shoes so that dirt doesn't spread. It makes sense to have a designated "entrance area"

my mother's house and childhood home has a front door that opens directly into the living room and the layout she chose does a lot of these things subconsciously so i never really noticed until now. it also really helps that the door is closer to a corner and is surrounded by a small bit of hardwood flooring to make it feel seperate from the carpeted living room
I'd never put a daybed as a barrier -- better use a sofa, with its high backrest, for that purpose.
@joob40

I don't like a daybed there either, but you don't want your back against the door. I lived in a house with the back against the door like this and it was fine, BUT there was a short hallway extending the doorway out, and a step down into the living room. So the doorway felt totally separate. The mirrored hallway walls probably helped catch that energy, too. Now I know why they were there! 😅

Weirdest front door. The room is not designed to have a tv. For me, the first one is the better solution, then add shoe storage on the side(original sofa place). The 2nd solution is weird and the tv is still far away.

I like how the concept of "energy" is really about foot traffic and mental/emotional comfort.
Is there a reason you wouldn’t put the sectional against the upper left corner so you’d be in the power position relative to the front door? And then a coffee table / daybed to close off the space and protect from the front door energy. And maybe some curtains on those big windows where they overlap with the couch, so you don’t feel as exposed from behind. That way you’d be able to look at the fireplace directly. Though I’m not sure what id do about the tv.

Oh wait, I missed that those windows are doors, and that there’s another door at the top of the room. Still, depending on what can be separated from that sectional, I wonder if it would work?

how do i get this guy to help me with my boyfriend and I's room?!? its tiny and we can't figure out how to make it efficient and comfortable bc we both need desks. I NEED HIS WISDOM

A lot of people think they have to put furniture against the wall Once I learned about “zones” and that you don’t have to put a couch up against the wall, I was able to make a nice space
The "now you know!" Makes me smile everytime I want a comp of him just saying it
Can't you just insert some custom walls to create an entry hallway that not only separates it, but also steers people away from the center of the room? I guess it would ruin the fireplace a bit but that seems like an acceptable and potentially still solvable sacrifice to make.

I am from Egypt.. And that's the design used for almost 99% of affordable low cost apartments! We moved many times in the past 15 years and every apartment we moved into had the main door like that just into the living room.
I fixed my front-door in the living room-problem in a different way: I built a gyproc wall with a sliding door in the room, creating a hallway corridor from the front-door to the sliging door to the room. Of course, that would not have been possible had the living room been much smaller.
This is really useful information bc I live in a one-room-apartment! :D
My current place has a front door in the living room but it's slightly recessed, so I bought a tension mounted curtain rod and a plain white curtain to put in the recessed threshold and hide the door completely.
This has taught me that before i buy a home (lol i aint ever gonna be able to do that in my lifetime or the next) to get a blue print and plan the rooms first
Turn the semi circle couch towards fireplace, mount tv above fire, chair to the left, rug under couch, closet in the right corner, entry bench ✅
that hotel lobby joke was a violation tho- 😭
An old neighbour of mine, when I was a child, had the very same table 😍
Seriously tempting me to go make copies of my home's floor plan and doodle on them

Hahahaha your legendary humour !
I live for the “now you know”
I couldn’t t do this. Now there are two seating areas with their backs to doorways. And one seems to almost block the doorway to the hall or wherever that goes
The paths idea seems to work out pretty well
What about putting the couch in the lower corner on the same wall as the front door and having the TV set out in front. It would block off the pathway that runs across the room & doorway further into the house, creating a little cosy area?
"and it feels like HoTeL LoBbY" 😂😂😂😂😂
Hate it when there's no foyer. People walk in, wet coats, umbrellas etc. Early arrivals get to see all this. I prefer that guests can get in and get settled before coming to the party. Yeah, looks like a hotel lobby-- of a hotel where you come to get murdered! Also, hate TVs. Thanks!

I’m having a huge problem trying to figure out how to set up the Living-room. So frustrated.
So they kind of had the right layout to begin with, keeping everything as far away as possible from the main door and pathways. If they had a bigger tv it wouldn’t feel so vast and definitely in need of the suggested rug.
I will help brother
Sometimes I think about posting a video of my room in the hopes someone like you sees it. I've got a roof that angles up with a 60 degree angle that starts at the wall on shoulder height I've always wanted yo place my stuff ANYWHERE else, but the door and thermostat are always in the way
Genius.
😂"it feels like a hotel lobby" lol
For the video living room I would have used the television as front door energy blocker / energy redirection. I would have put the coach were is the television that is near the chimney, so it creates a cosy warming space The television in front of the door in a biger bench and maybe a mirror at the back of the telly (looks nicer and diverts the attention) Then at the side of the front door the area to leave the coats, shoes, bags, keys and so on What do you think?
I feel like before people buy furniture they need to just get some cushions and a sleep mat and figure out where they feel good to sit naturally and where they naturally put their stuff and THEN BUY The furniture.
Oh, I see, with the original layout, it looks like the door rules the room, everything has to allow that door, everything works around it, there is no flow! I get it! I see how you created "flow" and the door no longer controls the room.
Front door opens to living room. Natural pathway is behind the couch.. approx 36 inches between back of couch and wall. It's this better than creating a longer walking path that goes through the middle between couch and tv?
