"the dceu is dead. bury it." What a journey. This is the end of an era and here's a look back at the DCEU. Not really a retrospective or a review of each movie but more so just a timeline of events and overview of how the movies did and how fans, audiences, critics and the studio reacted. This will be the last time for a while talking about comic book movies and now I'm gonna focus on other topics for future uploads.

I agree. We could’ve gotten: 1. Shazam/Superman Vs Black Adam 2. Batman Vs Deathstroke 3. Man of Steel 2 4. Justice League 2 & 3 5. Legion of Doom 6. New Gods 7. Justice League Vs Darkseid 8. Keanu Reeves Constantine 9. Deathstroke solo film 10. Zack Snyder Watchmen crossover AKA Doomsday Clock or a proper Flashpoint film…. But what I’m saying is that Snyder had a clear vision where he wanted his universe to go. The MCU just keeps going on forever overstaying it’s welcome, because it was a scam from the beginning. The MCU was created to milk blind people out of their money. Period. That’s why Martin Scorsese doesn’t consider it real cinema.

Killing off Superman in the second movie pretty much killed the entire traction the DCEU had. Let's face it, Batman vs Superman was the biggest mess that destroyed everything, using two big storylines in a single film to START your universe, isn't a good idea.

The moment that Zack Snyder made that dream world comment, the same as Manchester Black in Superman vs. The Elite, I knew that he was the wrong director for Superman and the DC Universe. Zack Snyder just doesn't understand Superman and I honestly don't think he ever will. The same goes for Batman. The DCEU wouldn't have been such a incoherent mess and died a pathetic death if WB hired somebody who actually gives a crap not just for Superman, but the DC universe as a whole.

There's a plethora of dynamic/great stories with tell with a more traditional/classic/happy-go-lucky Superman, Zack Snyder just wasn't good enough of a creative to handle Superman on screen. His version of Superman has far too many polarizing reactions to sustain a franchise.

As mixed as this universe was, I'll admire for having so many varied stories. It definitely didn't feel like the MCU & I'm grateful.

The first half is snyderverse, aquaman and shazam 1 is under geoff john. Then from Bird of Prey to aquaman 2 is hamadaverse. Its 3 different producer.

The fact that this universe for an extended period of time did not have a Superman or Batman is insane the two most important characters for DC in this universe straight up did not have either one for a while. Everyone that wanted this universe to somehow come back forget that they're cast members that weren't really involved in this stuff anymore how can we restore something where so many people have already moved on.

​​​@@Jonas-ej7id Don't forget that every single live-action Batman has killed, Michael Keaton straight up attached a bomb to someone and smiled as he exploded, Val kilmer tripped up two-face causing him to fall to his death, and Christian Bale left rase al goul to die and pushed Harvey dent off a ledge. If we're going by the logic of Batman can't ever kill that means every single incarnation of Batman is bad, the only difference is that the DCEU pointed out his hypocrisy made it a point that he shouldn't and that he lost his way after the death of robin, and began caring less and started killing in proximity, he doesn't start getting knives & start stabbing criminals (although he did pin a criminal to the wall with a knife) or blowing their heads off, only in the knightmare sequence which is literally the apocalypse, other than that he just takes down their vehicles which they just so happen to be using at the time. Sorry for The Long winded essay, but it's just weird how people fundamentally misunderstand what batfleck is going for and how they don't like him killing, yet they love someone like keaton who will directly blow someone up with a smile.

In a metaphorical sense, the ultimate edition of BvS explains the piss jar

How the DCEU was going to be presented under Snyder would have been vastly different than the MCU, but audiences were so ingrained with the MCU that WB thought changing their shared universe to be like the MCU would turn things around. The DCEU being different may have helped it stand out if the studio didn't meddle in it so much.

I feel like you could've gone a little deeper into The Flash in particular, mostly the irony that when Michael Keaton was announced to come back as Batman, everyone was excited, but then suddenly the stories around Ezra Miller came out, the hype immediately died, and the movie failed because of that. BvS is a microcosm of everything that was wrong with the DCEU. It tried to do too much too soon, and it showed that DC and Warner Bros didn’t have a solid plan to develop the universe organically over time.

I think Goyer had the idea for MoS and Nolan offered to produce it, not the other way around

What i know is they both wrote MoS script back in 2009. Goyer want to make superman to be sci-fi epic, Nolan want it to be believable superhero movie. Later in 2010, they searched for director. There's 11 director they interview and asked them about their opinion about superman and his world. Name on the list 1) Sam raimi 2) Bryan Singer 3) Ang Lee 4) Kenneth Branagh 5) doug liman 6) Matt reeves 7) Peter berg 8) Francis lawrence 9) i forgot 10) i forgot 11) zack snyder Although i didn't know this list True or not but nolan choose snyder because snyder matching with their realistic sci-fi what if superman living among human.

I blame WarnerBros. for the failure that is The Snyderverse/DCEU. They picked Zack Snyder to spearhead the universe after he clearly said that he didn't want that, he just wanted to release projects to culminate in his Justice League Trilogy. They also should've brought the tv shows into theie universe, that would've showed the difference in tone. Imagine we got accurate portrayals of The Justice League members with great solo projects in an actualy cohesive cinematic universe, while also we could've gotten an Emerald City series (Not That Arrow series, Legends Of Tomorrow, Doom Patrol, Black Lightning, The Constantine series that was canceled for no reason, & The Swamp Thing series that was canceled for no reason. It would've been great.

I am VERY glad you chose to focus on the behind the scenes and the reactions to these movies instead of mini reviews! It is far more interesting and mini reviews would’ve been so redundant.

It was a wild ride during those years. A lot of ups and downs. Mostly downs, sadly. It had so much potential. I was a fan of Zacks' vision for the most part. With some changes here and there it would have been an awesome story. MAN, I WANTED MORE DARKSEID!!! End the end, It was also awesome to have seen the Snyder Cut and I'm excited to seen what Gunn does. I watched all of your DC videos btw throughout the years. Ill stick around for the new stuff. Think of it like this Lord of the Rings and Monty Python are two both successful franchises but what if Lord of the Rings tried to emulate Monty Python vibes so it appeals to the Mainstream Audience that loved Monty Python, it would have been a laughingstock. DC and Warner Bros. Profit maximizing measures have been the biggest enemy of WB and DC and DC will not produce Better Films if they don't change their mindset no matter which potential pedophile, they bring to direct their universe. I know you’ve made jokes before that you don’t look back on kindly, I know I do And 2. While you are correct, DC needs to focus on their own thing… some visions just aren’t made for other characters. Theres a vast difference between Swamp Thing and Superman stories in terms of tone. Fans want accurate versions of these characters, and Snyder’s just weren’t imo. Thats why I’m excited to see what Gunn has to bring to the table, cause he seems really passionate and it seems like we’ll get a more accurate version of the character. But I’m holding my judgement and waiting, just like you should.

Henry Cavill has been one of the most disrespected actors in Hollywood history, both on-screen and off. By the time that shake up of Black Adam came around where it resurrected and then immediately killed his Superman again, it sometimes feels like they legit axed the DCEU just to fuck with him.

Every entry of the franchise felt like a desperate act of appeasement. "Oh you didn't like that? Well how about THIS? Oh, that's no good either? Well how bout THIS?" And it just turned into a huge tangled mess that nobody could agree on.

I have lots, lots of issues with tge whole DC Extended Universe, not just as films, but also as adaotations of DC Comics. To begin with, the whole universe lacked strategy and plans to truly be different from the whole MCU, and just because the films were darker were not enough, which leads me to my biggest complaint about this 'universe': the characters. Superman, the heart and soul of DC Comics, was now turned into an insecure misanthrope who dislikes helping others (and Henry Cavill was fucking awful as Superman), is brooding his choices, and looks down on everybody. He's not Batman, for god sake. Even Batman isn't Batman but a murderous and hypocrite manchild who lacks emotional intelligence and loves bring pain and revenge. Wonder Woman is a self-isolating brute who prefers violence to talking to her enemies. The Joker actually loves Harley Quinn instead of using her to fulfill his twisted goals. What's disturbing to me is, people love Snyder's take on these characters, who were supposed to be the pinnacle of superheroism, just because they're set in a realistic and dark setting, killing the fun of it. I don't want superheroes to be like nihilistic dramas, but as the escapist fantasies they were meant to be. Not even the movies unconnected to the Snydercrap were interesting, because this nonsense should have ended in JOSSTICE LEAGUE, but Warner and DC were so stubborn to admit no one liked their films, and only after the abysmal response to BLACK ADAM were both studios too late to realize this. I'd like to say I'm happy this 'universe' is dead, but James Gunn is recycling some elements of that rotten universe to make the new one, and as I much as I love him and his GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY (best comic book trilogy ever IMO) and his Suicide Squad, I just don't have complete faith in him.

It's crazy just how far the MCU has fallen

As a massive fan of MoS and BvS:UE i was super excited for the DCEU but JL (2017) was my breaking point. I didnt even hate the movie, it was just so underwhelming that i was just disappointed. I swore I wouldnt support another DC film, only the Snyder cut if they actually released it and they did. RIP DCEU 😔

I didn’t even like it to begin with. Also I preferred the whedon cut.

It seems like in the beginning of the DCEU, the 3 main big wigs were Greg Silverman, Toby Emmerich, and Kevin Tsujihara. I don’t know their exact specific titles because in most of the sources I checked it said chairman or president for all 3 and I can’t find a consistent date for when they stepped in, took the lead, or took over. Anyway, you can partially blame Toby and Kevin for not allowing Josstice league to delay cause they wanted to keep their bonuses before the AT&T & Time Warner merge. With that in mind, I don’t blame the 3 guys for changing all the movies or not course correcting when things were looking bad because anytime we hear “the studio” or “the executives”, we don’t know who they are so all we can do is blame the company as a whole. I say this to make this point : WB (whoever could make shit happen or make demands) should have either: forced Snyder to make man of steel 2 and hire more talent so the movie ends up better, force Snyder to put JL on pause and take the logical route by making the origin movies before putting out JL, or put JL and all future movies on pause so they can make a better plan and roadmap after the bad reception of BvS and SS. Because even though they are responsible for BvS initial bad reception, SS bad reception, and finale changes to Wonder Woman, they could’ve made a comeback. Finally, the only conclusion I am left with is that WB dug themselves into a ditch and never managed to get out, because really if I’m being genuine, they were done after BvS, no chance of recovery. And another thing, they still made plenty of bonehead decisions after Josstice league like taking Black Adam out of Shazam even with both characters not being as well known, having no plan or big movie event after justice league (partially blamed on Walter Hamada), Toby and WB still being on Snyder’s ass with the snyder cut which may have been because he and them were worried it would make fans like snyder more and the company less which has been speculated is the reason why the snyder cut was sort of leaked a week early on hbo max, greenlighting birds of prey (the allure of SS was long gone, there wasn’t demands for a sequel or spin off, and any real birds of prey fans would have been turned off) and making it R rated (I think this was an unnecessary decision because remember executives wanted SS to be more like Deadpool but I mean they didn’t make SS R rated so why did they do it for birds of prey?), allowing the birds of prey marketing and movie to trash their male audience, not taking the Disney+ approach of putting their new movies on streaming and just charging $30 thus WW84 and TSS flopped, letting Walter Hamada try and reboot the entire franchise with the flash which was in conjunction with the batgirl movie that David Zaslav, his boss, was responsible for cancelling. WB’s never ending hate boner for Superman and Henry Cahill that has never been explained at all we just know they don’t like him or the idea of another super man movie, and finally, agreeing to bring Henry Cavill back (they included him in Black Adam and filmed an ending for the flash that included him) only to give the franchise off to James Gunn and Peter Safran before even checking to see if they wanted the same thing and letting James announce a reboot when there was still FOUR more movies left in the DCEU. There’s tons of other factors but I just wanted to focus on WB’s mistakes. This took a while to write but I just recapped all of it. WB didn’t just fumble the ball, they took it all the way to the other end zone

Snyder has some real directive talent and his style is really quite something. However, imo Snyder never really understood the DC characters nor he really tried to in the first place. His vision was somewhat unique but it was all over the place. Add to that the internal politics with the studio and the producers and the fact that there was no concrete vision for DCEU and that mixture was roten from the start. It's a miracle the husk of this cinematic universe was dragged throughout the years as long as it did.

Where did I condemn Snyder? Literally gave the Snyder Cut nothing but praise during his section in the video and even said they should've stuck to his plan from the start.

At the begining, Matt Reeves was supposed to be director for Affleck movie. Affleck just did not want to direct and act at the same time since his recent film where he did both did not do well. Affleck even post a tweet “welcome to batcave” But Matt Reeves wanted to do his own stuff and said to studio “I direct my own stuff or not direct at all.” So basically we can “thanks” Reeves for Batfleck movie not to come out as well… I am not a fan of The Batman, so I am kinda sad about it even more.

Actually the truth is much weirder. The real reason why Ben affleck said he can't produced a good script because geoff John Who became DCEU producer in march 2017 demand that script to be heavily use court of owl. Ben affleck according to Kevin Smith said Ben using his daredevil element with a serious house on serious earth story but heavily similar to arkham asylum game with deathstroke as main villain. So how they gonna insert deathstroke, court of owl, a serious house on serious earth, arkham asylum plot into one script? Ben gave up and someone inside WB presumely geoff John brought Matt reeves in. Matt reeves at first just told to direct Ben affleck script until geoff John told him to do his way. So Matt reeves backstabbing geoff John by saying he won't direct it if its not given 100% control over his script. This is why there's 3 days delay before he signed up the contract. WB give up on geoff John because he got a bad record with his Green lantern screenplay flop in 2011. Geoff John Who backstabbing snyder from behind now got backstabbing from Matt reeves. Although i'm okey with the batman because the hype ruin that movie, at least geoff John tasted his own "solution"

Thank god Ben "Jack Daniels" Affleck was out. Besides his design, there's nothing interesting in this Batman, dude's barely a "detective" and became so useless in JL that it's a joke.

The DCEU certainly had it's ups and downs, but "Man of Steel," "Aquaman 1," and the Snyder-cut of "Justice League are three of the best comic book films of all time, all three are easily in the top ten in my book. And what make that even more impressive is the fact that I genuinely despised both Aquaman and Superman in the comics, and yet they were so good in these films that they managed to make me for the very first time - genuinely love and care about them both!

You can like the snyder cut but it isn't the greatest movie ever made theres problems with some pointless scenes and slow motion

What a messy wild ride it’s been for the DCEU both good and bad, hopefully what James Gunn does is better and can at least redeems the DC brand. There were some movies I loved from the DCEU, some that I liked a lot and some that I thought that were bad. I can tell the reason why it was all over the place was because DC didn’t have a studio heading everything in One Direction. It was all separate Warner Bros. movies that they were loosely trying to tie things together but when the DCEU was good. It was great, when they put out a movie that was bad it stood out like a sore thumb. I am very excited for the DCU that’s coming next year now that we finally have a studio studio for the DC comic properties and we have James Gunn, a guy that knows the comic books, and knows how the fans think and act for better, or for worse, but as a lifelong fan of DC comics going back to the early 80s the DCEU will always be special to me because my whole life even going back to the Christopher Reeve Superman movies, and the Michael Keaton, Batman, movies, even back then all I wanted was a universe where the heroes could be on the same screen in the same movie acknowledging each other. I never thought we would get that. Man Steel, Wonder Woman, Aquaman , The Suicide Squad, both Shazam, movies, and The Flash we’re all movies I love, and then you had movies like Batman versus Superman and black Adam and the second Aquaman movie that I liked but didn’t love. I acknowledged that they could’ve been a lot better but either way it was still the first shared big screen, DC movie universe. I really wish we could’ve gotten a green lantern movie in there and had a green lantern in Zack Snyder Justice league, because really the Green Lantern Corps is what makes it a universe that you can do a lot of cool things as a shared property. Anyone that reads the comics knows that the justice league doesn’t just hang out on earth all day they are literally all over the universe. When you read the original, Green Lantern rebirth, the Sinestra wars and The Blackest night, it really does show you in a great way that the green lantern Corps are at the center of the universe so that would’ve been cool.

Kinda sad to see it go, but it's time.

While Wonder woman suffered from reshoot and rewrite of the 3rd act, Aquaman was not that far in development and so no reshoots were done on the 3rd act but heavy rewrites as we saw in the original concept art the atlantians would be attacking the land dwellers just like the animated film throne of Atlantis.

Snyder cut wasnt promoted by fans. It was promoted by PR agency that Snyder hired just to get WB attention

Glad to own 3 of snyder's works on bluray, shame it had to end but also a big shame at what a task he was given to try and make work. Man of steel was the first superman movie i saw in theaters and thought it was an event for me. Sure I would have loved a man of steel 2 or solo batman before bvs but what we got i don't entirely mind either and won't whine about it like a lot of others have. Zack and Ben's batman was near perfection that Pattison couldn't even reach (I tried giving him a shot, thought that the movie was boring) and Ben's up there second to keaton with bale in third, not saying bvs batman was what i expect in later movies but there was character growth as shown in ZS's JL. Speaking of that movie, that was as close to a character journey as we're gonna get with the flash because i doubt we'll ever get another one, which i believe was better tamed and I pray Ezra gets help. Aquaman and wonder woman 1 were okay, what you see is what you get with them while aquaman is quite the colorful looking movie with a good happy ending. Black adam...Pierce's Dr. Fate was the only good thing in that movie even though it felt like a playground roleplay. awful movie. farewell dceu, thanks for the hits you did make. as for WB, not interested in anymore of what you're selling.

Im glad zack snyder could see his vision of the justice league and thats about it, WB can go fokt itself for all i care now.

I feel bad for the Snyderoids, but I am optimistic about what is to come

You know, DC always lend itself to a multiverse. In a perfect world, we could have had a proper "DCEU" timeline (title it Earth with a random number here) and Gunn's DCU timeline also give it a title Earth with a random number. There are also other continuties present with the TV shows after all. You know what would have been a cool thing to see? Actors playing different roles in these different timelines. Like if people wanted Jason Momoa to be Lobo in the DCU, he can still be Aquaman in the DCEU and same for Wilem Dafoe as Joker and Vulko respectively. And on the otherside with DC (I forgot the term here), standalone self contained films portraying more unique interpretations of DC characters like Joker. Boom, endless opportunities for crossovers at the same time leaving room for self contained films. Nobody needed to replace anyone.

Just a note for the Harley Quinn movie: it came out around the same time as the first Sonic movie, and was marketed very poorly. I remember seeing the Sonic movie with my friends (many of which weren't even Sonic fans) who actively read comics, and they had no interest in that movie, because all of the marketing made the movie seem pretty dull.

Every DCEU movie sucked, looked terrible, and was an obvious attempt (and failure) to mimic the MCU.

Man its sad that the dceu was like this I'm glad that its over and we're getting a new dcu with James Gunn and Peter Safran I hope things turn out well and good

Not so long ago, blogger Aaron Fisher was attacked by a madman. He took possession of his personal data and threatened to kill Aaron and his family just because criticized James Gunn and said that he liked Snyder's films with Cavill, Affleck and others. And who after that has a crazy and toxic cult of psychopaths ?

The DCAU is superior to the DCEU because of its amazing storytelling and excellent characters. I mean it gave us Kevin Conroy as Batman and Mark Hamill as The Joker. Nothing tops the OG DCAU. The DCEU could learn a thing or two from the DCAU maybe the films would be enjoyable.

If the DC universe is going to get restarted I would like to see a true adaption to the flash point paradox; Atlanteans vs Amazonian with a captured Superman and Thomas Wayne’s Batman. The brutality and personal aspect of that war and battle with reverse flash would be amazing. Then a green lantern movie with the red corp being the antagonist with a slow expansion of the emotion spectrum. A Batman movie with nightwing already established and sick Grayson dead, either with Tim drake as Robin but quickly moves into Red Robin for an intro of Damian Wayne Damian could set up a teen titan connection like in the animated movies I would basically like to see the animated movies in live action and for god sakes give me a red hood movie

This really does bum me out because I was off work these last couple days and decided to binge a bunch of these movies and honestly had a great time. I watched the Special edition of man of steel, ultimate edition of BvS, Snyder cut JL along with The flash movie. So I got a pretty good taste of what he was trying to go for and I think it had so much potential… ZS JL alone was better than like 90% of MCU movies imo…. Like I think Henry Caville and Gal Gadot were such good choices. WB is so quick to give up instead of putting more effort in…. It’s really sad. Should we even be excited about this new universe? Like are they just going to keep rebooting? I’m really feeling like I’m not even going to watch anything that comes out of this new universe…

The issue was the studio. They didn’t know what to do while the fans were programmed to think superheroes need to be like the MCU. If we would’ve gotten the real Justice league movie in 2017, then the DCU would’ve been completed

I may be in the minority but im very disappointed we wont get to see the overall justice league vision realized with a the conflict against darkseid. There were definitely missteps and casting desicions I did not agree with, but there were things that genuinely surprised me and i liked for the time they came put in retrospect. Some cool narrative changes to characters like batman and Superman to distinguish them like superman having the codex of krypton infused into him and facing the negativity of the public to his representation as a symbol of hope which was very similar to the jaded real life film viewers. I also liked batman setup as an antagonist for superman and then committing to that for a redemption arc was a bold narrative choice i really liked. Most importantly it strongly distinguished itself from Marvel which I think is important for competition in the film industry. I have hopes for the dcu, but I will miss some of the dark edge and the cosmic horror stakes setup to build up the invasion of apokolips especially that I hope will not be thrown out in the name of being financially viable (aka just do marvel but with dc characters). One of the main aspects I'm hopeful for is a proper green lantern film.

I kinda love the DCEU, of course is more of a unhealthy love since most of the moview treated me like trash. But I still kinda love it for how weird and unpredictable it was. It was sometimes fun, sometimes sad, most of the time bad. It is the thing that I love to hate and hate that I love. I guess most of people are happy to forget that all movies in this universe existed, but for me I will forget most of it, but the parts I liked I really liked.

What may also have fueled the Snyder Cut movement were pop culture personalities, with no insider information on the subject, insisting a "Snyder Cut" never existed, and then mocking anyone who didn't own a dartboard with Zack Snyder face on it, nevermind actual Snyder/DCEU fans. It felt good to see those arrogant liars proven wrong

Wrong, Bird Of Prey released in 6th February. The world shut down in 16 march 2020. Any movie released in january or February is the signs studios didn't trust these movie will give them profits. All movies gain their majority of profits within first 2 weeks. Bird Of Prey is never meant to be profitable, it just margot Robbie project small project because she is producer for BoP
