The "losing their other half" is a nice touch. What's also good is the variety or relationships. Rocket and Cap lost their friends. Scarlett Witch and Quill lost their lovers (although she vanished anyway), Thor lost his brother, Nebula lost her sister, and Stark lost his son.

One little thing that I liked was when the avengers music didn't play over the marvel logo and then the entire movie I was waiting for the big hero shot with hero music but it didn' come. I think that was one of the small things for me that made the ending so impactful because the hero's never really get ahead of Thanos at any point in the film.

Of course I can be proven wrong since Avengers 4 isn't coming out, but it is very clear that the movie portrayal is different, ad it's unlikely that death will be a character. Of course that line was in Avengers, but that was 6 years ago, and it's pretty clear from all of Thanos's cameos that they didn't have a clear idea of what Thanos's character was until the Russo's started development. They assumed he would be like the comics, but then this films writers changed his motivations to be more relatable, sympathetic, and emotionally complex. To bring in death now would undermine his better portrayal in this film

If you think about it, Thanos truly is the protagonist of the movie and the Avengers are the antagonists. Seriously, he gets the heroes' journey. The inciting incident, the call to action, the challenge and the lowest point when he has to sacrifice the person he loves most in the world and then the eventual triumph. Really, Thanos is the hero here and the movie keeps showing that to us and we are so wired to think the bad people is not the protagonist of a super-hero move that we never actually buy he's going to win until he does. It's a twist that is telegraphed from the start and we don't want to buy it XD

One thing I love from this movie is that the ending and the movie in general is SO focused on our heroes saving the universe and failing in the end, that the credits are normal. There is no hip hop music, no photos, no cgi added in the credits, no nothing. Its just the names going up and that's it. And I love it for how serious Marvel takes this film.

Yeah, maybe in that final Banner scene when the Hulk doesn't come out, Banner could have panicked and cried out in fear, maybe that would have sold it's weight? It could still turn out the same way, cause Banner's a clever guy, but maybe it's an act of desperation instead of something comedic. Good point. Also, I loved the score when Cap shows up in the train station, but even more I loved when the music went silent during the scene when everyone is ashing away. They did something similar in the Buffy episode "The Body", when Buffy finds her mother dead on the couch from a brain aneurysm; all the important scenes afterwards were completely silent, really adding an unnerving tone to the episode.

Banner being able to take out Cull Obsidian at the end didn't bother me because he's really smart, what bothered me a bit was that the scene felt too whimsical and not serious enough, even though Bruce could've died. When Bruce said something along the lines of ..."Ah, screw it I'll do it myself, " felt too comedic in a scene which should've been intense imo. Obsidian's death could've been a lot more satisfying if it didn't feel like the butt-end of a joke and actually had Banner struggling to get the upper hand more.

  • @kevinsantos5050

Well, I actually loved that scene, cuz right now Hulk doesn't want to come out, even if it kills Banner, Hulk was probably acting as a kid as his ego and pride was crushed to pieces by Thanos, Hulk didn't stand a chance against Thanos. And that conflict that Banner has with Hulk is more prominent on that scene. you can clearly see Bruce furious as he is about to die but HULK just screams NO at the top of his lung pissing Bruce, even more, to say Screw you and insult the Hulk and proceed to kill Obsidian was great at least for me :D Which I think will be part of the next movie subplot Bruce confronting the Hulk and probably returning stronger and angrier than ever? who knows we still have a year to speculate xD

Sought you out on Twitter for the first time after seeing this movie because we see eye to eye on these things and I couldn't wait for your review to hear your thoughts. What Marvel studios has done here is unprecidented and they deserve every dime of money they'll earn and every ounce praise coming their way. I totally understand what you mean when you say this isn't your favorite Marvel film but it is the best Marvel film. In terms of the execution of the attempt this is essentially the triple Lindy of superhero movies. Yes the film isn't perfect and I agree with your take on Banner it should have been taken more seriously especially the fail in the Wakanda scene. People complain that Quill and Gamora's relationship wasn't fleshed out enough to warrant his reaction on Titan and I couldn't disagree more I mean c'mon did these people see the trailer for GOTG2? Mantis freakin spells it out for you, lol. The scenes with Rocket and Winter Soldier were some of my faves. Thor was absolutely amazing and well acted.... I could and will go on for days about this film. I'm going back to see it again tomorrow. As emotionally draining as this film was it keeps you coming back for more and isn't that what we're here for?

No, T'Challa was already going to continue Wakanda's increased participation in the rest of the world - remember, that was already begun by T'Challa's *father*, so it was happening well before Killmonger. Killmonger's one difference in opinion was that he wanted to start a war, and he certainly didn't get that.

"Gamora is great" is my new favourite phrase. Thank you for praising her! I have watched countless reviews that have mentioned her briefly but not one that's given her character, and Zoe Saldana, the credit she deserves. She was already one of my favourite characters going into it, mainly because I was always interested in this backstory that we knew little about, but had clearly impacted her greatly. Seeing what I'd longed for portrayed on the screen with her character was so satisfying as I was worried going into it that there would be little to no focus on her, despite her being the closest to Thanos. But boy was I wrong! Cried my eyes out during her death. Saddest moment of the movie for me!

Infinity War’s ending was completely unexpected. A few months before it’s release, I read up on the “Infinity Gauntlet” comic storyline. I was surprised that he actually killed half the universe and I thought to myself: “they are definitely not going to do this in the movie.” But then, they actually did it, and I was completely surprised. All the trailers made it seem like it was going to be this big win for the Avengers, and it wasn’t. The villain won. When Spider-man died, that was the moment when I knew I was going to cry. This was the second Marvel movie to accomplish this, with the first one being Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. The whole car ride home I was lost in thought. I would give the movie five stars and I highly recommend you see it as many times as you can.

I predicted the whole movie besides Loki’s death, other than that it seemed... eh. No big twists, just like in Spiderman where I knew once he knocked on the door or rang the doorbell that Vulture was going to answer the door. It seemed like it was the only option to make the movie interesting, except it wasn’t really shocking. The only thing that somewhat surprised me was in black panther when they did a flashback for the 3rd time to reveal that the enemy was the cousin, but it got boring with all the flashbacks. Also because I was watching black panther to be only entertained and didn’t pay attention to whether or not it was a good movie. Marvel doesn’t do a good job in my opinion at doing plot twists or things like that. Edit: also dc doesn’t do any better with shocking things besides in TDK, other than that both don’t do very well.

Yellow Goose 48 before the movie came out this was my prediction: Loki gets killed in the first 5 to 10 minutes. Hulk somehow gets blown into space towards earth to warn strange and Stark finds out about this causing him to be one of the first responders to the new York attack all the while this alerts Spidey so Stark and Spidey fight. at the time I think I thought hulk would join the fight but no lol. In the trailers thanos very clearly had the power stone first, so I assumed he eliminated Xandar and that's how the guardians caught wind and decide to chase after him, but no lol. I never thought the soul stone was in wakanda, personally I thought that theory was dumb i always thought it was on another planet , and at the time I assumed it was on Titan for what ever reason lol. so, half right? lol

I respect your opinion but for me, the Hulk/Bruce Banner arc was well done, considering its not done yet. I am sure they have a huge surprise on the next Avengers. Bruce never wanted Hulk to be inside him, he even tried to kill himself so that Hulk would do no more harm to the world. Hulk knowing the people of earth doesn't like him, decides to hide and fight as a gladiator. He was unbeaten. But all that changed the minute he met Thanos. For a guy who was never beaten, Hulk was easily defeated on a bare Knuckle fight. This shows the audience how strong thanos is. Now, Hulk, after getting his ass handed to him, has his ego hurt. Maybe he is even in fear of Thanos and adding that they are back on earth, Hulk just doesn't want to Hulk out when Banner needs him the most. This is a subtle way for Bruce to Realise how important Hulk is, maybe he'll finally come to peace with it on the next Avengers movie and Hulk will also come to terms with Bruce cuz it will be both of them working together to defeat Thanos. Both Hulk and Bruce earning respect for each other. And that is a beautiful Arc. Kaboom.

I do agree there are better MCU movies, like the WInter Solider. That will always be number one. But Infinity War for what it had to do, knocked it out of the park. The best comparison I give this movie is that it is like reading a comic. Specifically, a big event/ annual comic. It wastes no time with snappy exposition only with necessary stuff like Banner getting caught up. It expects you see the other movies and that to me is perfectly fine. If I had any flaws, I do agree some of the characters, like Cap are short-changed which sucks. Also, I do think the Wakandian battle sequence while really cool, could have been a better built up. But really, what I love is Thanos, Scarlet Witch, Gamora and Doctor Strange. THIS movie I argue has the definitive Doctor Strange performance in that this is comic book Strange. His power, demeanor and ability to think two-three steps ahead. And really, his chemistry with Stark was to me one of the best parts of this movie. In short, I know this term us used a lot and recklessly, but this is Marvel's Empire's Strikes Back in the sense that it is a cliffhanger. It subverts expectations in a great way. Realistically, I'd give this movie an 85 but I bump it to a 90 for the stuff that I love. It is excellent.

This movie was definitely emotional. You hit it right at the end when you said it isn't about who's gone but who is left. Maybe its because I just finished guardians 2 again like an hour before I watched infinity war, but that final scene in that movie where Rocket has his "he didn't push them all away" moment was fresh in my mind when he had to watch groot die, and then following that with Spiderman begging for his life and then dying in Tony's arms.... Holy crap even if it gets undone those fucking hurt.

There's definitely a plan when it comes to which characters died and which didn't. I don't think it's coincidental that all the original Avengers survived. I think they're setting it up so that the original Avengers get one last hurrah before several of them leave the MCU forever, either because they die, or because they retire (With the actors leaving the roles to do other things. I'm pretty sure RDJ and Evans are done after Avengers 4). Black Panther, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, the Guardians, and all the rest will have plenty of time to shine in future movies. Avengers 4 is about celebrating the ones they started with.

It's far from objectively the best Marvel movie, but what I'm most impressed with is that Marvel managed to pull off a great movie *at all*. Infinity War had so much build-up, so many restrictions and limitations on its narrative, and so much... effectively 'baggage', that for Marvel to be able to craft a coherent, well-(okay-)paced and enjoyable movie, to me, is an achievement in and of itself. That it's effectively "Infinity War Part 1", while apparently annoying some people, to me is actually a plus because it allowed the movie to end tragically and avoid the usual "and everyone lives happily after" ending to almost all superhero movies to date (save for Logan I guess, which is also a favorite of mine).

i cant really agree with you because the directors made this movie knowing that not everyone is going to get enough screentime, it is not their fault the industry standard is 150 min. Also not every character warrant more screentime, the director took the previous movies into account, those who didnt get enough screen time before will get more in this one (if they have a reason), all of your cons are by design but i am not saying it is perfect, it is just there is no better way to do it other than how theathric cut is. Also, I do understand what you mean, but I don't think objectively is a word you want to use when we are talking about quality of movies. Movies are by definition subjective. There is objectivity in the "technique" of art. Things you are "supposed" to do. It doesn't mean that those things are always the most entertaining and pleasing. For example, a movie "should" be able to stand on its own. That means that if you had never seen any other Marvel film, you should be able t o watch this movie and not have any issues. That's obviously not the case and, while I agree with you that I am glad that the movie did this (because I HAVE seen all of the other films), I might have been disappointed if we weren't with the previous entries, so this movie "fails" in that regard. That doesn't mean that it's not super entertaining or not excellent in other ways, but it is something that the movie "should" do, and doesn't. It's why movies like Citizen Kane and Vertigo are considered the best movies ever made. Its because they do everything they "should" do, despite the fact that they are boring as all hell lol They are the best from a technical standpoint. Am I making sense? Just my view, btw. You are, of course, welcome to your own.

  • @brucesnow7125

Craig Raboteau but no, I don't agree with this even though you make great points. But for me, even rules like Show don't tell" have over tonnes of exceptions where telling was actually more effective. Artists always find new creative ways to make movie because they don't have boundaries (like once it was considered that three act structure is only way to go, now it's very arguable), as good old Frank Capra once said - "There are no rules in filmmaking". It's all about how we consume the art, our emotions and how filmmakers find way to entertain us, make us think about the movie. Because of this myth of rules movies like Empire Strikes Back, 2001 Space Odyssey, Apocalypse Now, and even Vertigo were panned at the release by critics because they were different than usual stuff. And Empire Strikes Back is especially a great movie to compare to Infinity War, considering that both start without going into much details and both end in a cliffhanger, Empire Strikes Back was actually considered half a movie because of that. But now it's considered one of the best because of the unique feelings it gives to viewers. This is why especially I think that there are no rules and objectivity in movies - no movie is designed to appeal to everyone, those who try usually fail because movie turns into complete mess. If there was universal movie that everyone would love, then maybe objectivity would be a question, but there's no movie in the world where everyone loved it, even movies we consider the greatest are hated by some. Infinity War just like any movie has its core audience, and that audience is movie made for and I think we should judge it from that perspective.

Bruce Snow hey, brother. Thanks for taking the time to reply. I am a photographer. One thing we learn in photography (which is an art) is the rule of thirds. Now, if a photograph doesn’t follow the rule of thirds it doesn’t automatically make it an unappealing or bad photo... it may, in fact, be stunning, but it is an objectively technically flawed photograph. That’s all I mean to say. Have you never had someone ask you if a movie was good and you either say or think; no. It wasn’t necessarily good, but it was very entertaining lol “The Room” is a perfect example of this. It is an objectively bad film... bad lighting, bad stage/sound design, bad acting, etc... objectively but, subjectively, many people (including myself) love it. Thanks again for replying!

You've put so much thought and care and work into this, it's extraordinary. I like seeking you out after superhero films come out and make their mark. Also, I've heard people say Thor was overpowered in this film, but I think it's because we're used to Thor being nerfed in the MCU. He's the God of Thunder - of course, he fights and destroys on another level. I didn't think Scarlet Witch was overpowered either. I loved that when it came time to kill Vision, she didn't hesitate as much as Quill did with Peter. There's a latent villain inside her that continues to be violent and angry, which is really interesting. I find it significant that they have never explored her feelings about Tony after AOU, except that she sides with Cap during CW, and she's mad at him during the airport battle for "locking her in her room". On some level, I think she continues to blame Tony for losing her brother. I love that Strange continues to be an enigmatic, sarcastic jackass. I love this idea that even though all seems lost right now, he knows exactly how it's going to turn out. It makes sense that the Russos had Benedict read the real script of A3 and A4. I'm positive he did the right thing. I'm very excited to see Ant-Man, the Wasp, Hawkeye and Captain Marvel A4. I have faith that Marvel will not just Mary-Sue Captain Marvel into saving the universe. They're better than that. I wonder if Shuri or M'Baku will assume the throne and mantle of Black Panther until T'Chala returns. And I wonder which of the supporting characters we know are alive after Thanos' victory (May, Pepper, Korg, Valkyrie, Happy, Hank). I need to knowww.

You're really aggressive, Aaron Levine, LOL. From a storytelling perspective, Thor: Ragnarok was about finding his own inner strength. That's why his hammer was shattered in the beginning, and that's why, at his most desperate, he hears his father say "What are you? Thor, God of Hammers?" So, yes, that was his character arc.

He also utilized his inner strenght in Infinity war too when he created the stormbreaker even the maker thought to be impossible because of the dieing star.He almost died in the process too goddamn it.. In short What inner strenght he found in Ragnarok got him through that almost impossible task as well.

Dude the reason Hulk wasn't out was because Of Thanos Beating the Shit out of Hulk. Hulk believed himself as the Toughest there is, And Then He Got his Ass Kicked. no wonder he didn't Come out.

Browntable well Think about it, It was played for comedic effect because Banner probably thought he could and Hulk as a Bullied Child Didn't want to. Stark didn't know that Thanos had Beaten the Hulk. That's why Banner was trying. hulk just didn't because Of Thanos.

what i like about thanos is that he doesnt waste any time after getting what he wants. He just never loose his focus or panic.. He is there, he explains, he does, he goes, whether the opponent is still standing or not. And that is pure motivation for a villain.

I don't understand the whole argument that it doesn't work without the other movies, which is does, but why is it an issue? Why does a movie HAVE to stand alone? If you want to understand the movie, then watch the others. Just like a TV series, watch all the episodes if you want to understand.

It's amazing, I went into the theatre thinking, "This movie is impossible, it's gonna suck, this will be a bigger disappointment than BvS." But in the end, I clapped for this movie so hard and long by myself in the theatre. Sure, it isn't even close to black panther or winter soldier in overall quality, but it actually couldn't and Marvel knew this: they knew that this movie by nature has an enormous amount of restrictions in storytelling and they just threw away a normal movie's structure to make the best movie they could by focusing on Thanos. the biggest thing that surprised me was that it knew its limitations and played with them and ultimately created a near perfect movie that is probably the best we could've gotten.

Thank you for praising the score. Of all the reviews and, for lack of a better term, "video essays" I've watched, you're the only one who mentioned it. The score really made its thing and worked on its role in the film. Yes, it's not the kind you would want to hear when going to the gym but Silvestri also made Skyrim's score and I love listening to it when I think. Also, the duo part, the character losing another that is of great importance to him or her, that's something only you have brought up so far. Many pointed that the original batch were left or a select more valuable ones were left but did not take into account the psychological impacts of the ones who disappeared to the ones who stayed. So thank you for taking a deep take on it. Like you, I watched it on opening day in the morning. And I really want to watch it again to better understand and see things I missed before. Once again, thank you for this video.

THANK YOU! I think you're the only person i've heard talk about the seriousness of Bruce Banner and the Hulk. In the comics the Hulk and Banner's multiple personalities is a key part for the character, and while it may be too dark and complicated to bring to the MCU they definately should go about trying to bring out some of that seriousness. I'm completely ok with them making banner's character comedic, bit they need to atleast acknowledge the seriousness of Banner's condition.
