A Collective Fever Dream?: Sagwa, The Chinese Siamese Cat

Ойын-сауық

Sagwa: The Chinese Siamese Cat was an animated children’s show that aired on PBS Kids from 2001-2002 with a total of forty episodes and 79 segments. To many who grew up with the show, it seems like a fever dream or a hallucination due to its short air time and unique concept. In this video I discuss the history of the series, its themes, and lastly, the merchandise and online flash player games hosted on the PBS Kids website. So without further ado, let’s dive into this PBS series inspired by Amy Tan’s 1994 book of the same name - Sagwa: The Chinese Siamese Cat.

Silk worms, bees, and some kind of birds. This one also stood out to me, because even as a kid, I couldn't believe how boneheaded the decisions were to ban animals that provide very important resources, as well as how the heck a ban could be enacted on wild animals in the first place. How do you even enforce something like that? Did the animals just leave?

@@CheyenneLin I used to imagine episode ideas for this show as a kid. One episode idea I came up with was where Sagwa went missing and ended up with amnesia as she is taken in by a husband and wife duo of Chinese animal doctors who try to mend her wounds, all while her family realize she's missing and try to find her. Another idea I had was where Sagwa develops a crush on another cat her age who's visiting with his family, and they bond, but soon it he and his family have to leave, much to Sagwa's dismay as for the first time in her life, she actually fell in love, and her family try to help her cope with the fact that sometimes some things just aren't meant to be. Final idea I had was where Sagwa becomes traumatized after a near death experience, and her family once again help her overcome her trauma.

This show actually changed the way I dreamed. Let me explain. I specifically remember an episode of Sagwa where the catfish was telling the origin of the catfish. There was a girl cat who fell into the water and she met a boy fish and when she first fell in he told her to just breathe slowly, in and out. Now any time I dream about being under water, that's how I breathe underwater.

one thing I've noticed looking back on Sagwa as an adult, is how mature and nuanced most of the stories' messages are! they tackle some pretty complicated themes, but told a simple and understandable way through the animal characters (like in the mouse sanctuary ep). I don't know how familiar the writers were with Chinese culture, but I could see how centuries worth of folktales would make for better material than coming up with moral dilemmas based on relatively-recent American culture

I think I know how you feel about authority figures trying to force kids who are othered to integrate with the majority group. I am neurodivergent and I always tried to stick with the other neurodivergent kids, but teachers would always try to sit me and pair me up with the neurotypical kids and it was awful. It's literally just creating more opportunities for bullying ,, 🤦 I appreciate how you talk about these things though, I think it's really important to talk about it so we can all reclaim the respect we were denied as children 🤝

As an autistic person myself, I understand why they would pair you up with neurotypical kids. You have to interact with neurotypical people in the real world, probably the most. Thus, they thought pairing you with neurotypical kids would help you learn how to interact better with neurotypical people. However, if neurotypical kids aren't taught about neurodiversity and how to respect it, bullying can happen simply because they don't understand you and thus think of you as weird, annoying or a burden on society. It's also important to respect that not everyone is gonna like everyone else, and that's okay.

@@catherinetyndale1734 your partly right. the other half is that the best way to combat prejudice and stereotypical thinking is exposure. if you never expose neurotypical kids to people who are neurodivergent, they often have a harder time understanding and/or sympathizing with them. Its the same reason why areas that are heavily one race or one religion tend to have prejudices about other groups.

  • @itsgonnabeanaurfromme

@@not_avaliable a proven effective way to combat these things is through education and moment by moment exposure. Saying "the best way to combat these is exposure" is very general and shows how little training you have in psychiatry. And this is exactly it. Those people forcing neurodivergent or autistic kids to play with others have no training in psychiatry or child psychology and they don't know how long to expose them. Their intent might be good, but they are just forcing these kids into stressful, poorly controlled situations where they can just end up decompensating. And comparing these situations with how races and religions interact with each other shows you have little understanding in how culture and race relations work.

  • @itsgonnabeanaurfromme

Kids in general without psychiatric problems or those that are not autistic (or the social term, neurodivergent) can only be exposed to stressful situations for seconds without developing long term side effects. Placing the neurodivergent children in social situations with others for prolonged periods of time when they are not ready is how you create acute stress reactions and trauma.

There actually was an episode topic. Several of the alley cats talk about how a lot of them have nicknames and that their real names have a strong personal meaning. When Sagwa and her brother get into the conversation the other cats kind of make fun of that her and her siblings names are silly and have no meaning to the point where Sagwa actually considers changing her name. But then her father tells her and her siblings the stories behind their names and how they were all connected to a joyful event that happened to their parents shortly before each was born and helped all three of them realize that their names did have meaning and were not a thing to be ashamed of.
