A brief study on some common terrestrial moss species (Collecting and Identifying land moss)
Mosses are one of the most fascinating plants on our planet. They belong to the division of plants known as Bryophytes.
Bryophytes are non-Vascular (lacking conducting channels for transportation of water and nutrients), non-flowering and has no rot system.
They reproduce through spores and attaches themselves to the substrate with rhizoids instead of roots. Water and nutrients are absorbed directly into cells by osmosis.
Most mosses prefer acidic soil. However there are species which can do well in both acidic and alkaline soil. Some species also like to grow on calcareous (containing calcium carbonate or lime)
There are more than 10000 specie of moss in this world. In this video we will take a close look at some of the common terrestrial (land) moss species found in the tropical forests of South India.

Hey Urban (since you haven't chosen to share your first name), I really appreciate this video in particular. I live in the desert south west of the US. Moss is rare here, we have more likens than moss, and even those aren't plentiful. I really enjoyed the video and text views of these plants that add so much to terrariums. Thanks again.

Thank you Michael. My name is Sushanto.
Very helpful! I identified maybe 3 of the ones I have in my terrarium. Sadly I didn't see one of them in this video, which I found a little odd because there's a giant sheet of this one on my roof. its leaves resemble cypress pine branches and have a braided texture.

Hola, pregunta, algunas plantas de acuarios plantados sirven para terrarios , ejemplo el MUSGO de Java ? Y por tu experiencia, ¿cómo se comportan los metales en los terrarios ? ❤gracias

Yes they are

Wow?! Came up to look for specific moss and was surprised to learned many varieties and i love the presentation very cinematic/futuristic reminded me of that martian movie. My house had odd septic tank "breathing pipe" that sometime erupt smelly yet clear water. turns out this liquid is a very good fertilizer. Wall surrounding this pipe are looved by moss i often scraped it. but this time it's interested me because of it's fuzz, maybe furry carpet like appearance it's color is pale green at first, i thought someone had trashed a piece of expensive carpet but this sticks to wall instead of laying down the floor. a kind of a mood moss isn't it?

Thank you for the video. I have a doubt , My ambient temperature is around 30 to 31 deg.C , max 32 deg.C, which moss do u recommend for closed terrarium
@TheUrbanNemophilist

The threshold is about 26-28 deg. You can try aquatic or tropical species

Have you tried dry starting of moss? And can these land moss be kept in aquarium? Sometimes my moss looses it's lush green color, and people say it's nutrient deficient but afraid to add ferts to it? Do you prefer any ferts or addition of items to the substrate to keep it healthy?
@TheUrbanNemophilist

Some terrestrial moss can sometimes work in aquarium. I have done dry start of aquatic moss and it works ok. All mosses do not work in enclosed spaces and may turn brown easily. Moss can be sensitive and it is important to house them in conditions similar to where they grow.

@@TheUrbanNemophilist so should i still stay away from ferts for moss?
@TheUrbanNemophilist

@@manojkumarkaavadiyan6121 i don’t use on terrestrial moss with the exception of the wabikusa mist from Dooa. You can always try it out. Let me know if it worked.
Do you know a good way to tell the difference between haircap and star moss, then feather and fern moss?
@TheUrbanNemophilist
3 жыл бұрын
I think haircap grows taller that star moss in which the leaves are also wider and more prominent. Fern most is is more wiry while feather moss is soft to the touch.

where can we get these type of moss in india??
@TheUrbanNemophilist

You can get a few of the species from aquascaping stores. Some you will need to collect ethically and with permissions from Nilgiris in the south while you might have to import a few species from South East Asia.
