It felt so good to finally get outside again and bring you some more candid content! 100% voice overs was never intended to be the norm, but that's what happened when I moved because of noise pollution. Do you like a more candid video like this or the voice overs? Definitely will always do both styles, but I'm just curious what you think. Let me know!

I do think the candid videos feel more like we're right with you, but the voice overs are effective in their own right. Both allow us to follow along with what you're saying- it's just the slightest bit more fun when it feels like we're getting horticultural lessons in person during the candid videos.

I appreciate the feedback! I think I want to do more like this and then reserve the voice overs for videos that really need it. Some topics are just very involved and I think conveyed best as a voice.

I think voice overs should only be used if environmental sounds are so disruptive, the viewing not enjoyable or the message isn't discernible. And of course, if the narration is totally botched and filled with errors. For some reason, KZread viewers have gotten crazy with the quality of video demands over the past few years, treating regular folks as if they should have content resembling that of a major production studio. A dog barking in the background, a passing vehicle, make the event more real. Hearing you spread ballast in a tank or having pumps hum is how it really is.

to be honest, after I started making terrariums, I can't walk 2 feet outside without looking down and saying: "that's a nice piece of moss"

that's the same as me. I literally spend my walks looking down on the forest floor for interesting vegetation - I end up with way to many plants and debris.

Luckily I have found one! He’s the perfect husband, he even aquaecapes with me and helps me collect things for our tanks when we go for walks. He’s the type of man to hold the door open for me, and treats me very great!! I hope everyone finds this kind of love ❤️ this is the only person I feel I’ve ever truly been in love with. As a biology teacher, mosses and the rest of bryophytes is by far the coolest plant group since they are the link of land plants to algae. Very informative video

Over the past 2(ish) years I have passed by either walking OR in a car, and suddenly felt a fascination about Mosses. How they ARE everywhere and yet so OVERLOOKED. Only recently I did something about this curiosity, I bought TWO books about Moss(es) and am now independently studying them in depth. Might cultivate some on my allotment plot. OR the bottom of my garden :) This video is EXCELLENT for me, as it shows I am not ODD (some laughed at me when I revealed my interest). SO thankyou and keep up the cracking work!!!!

Belgium also has all of these mosses, so I'm sure Germany has them as well.

i find woodland plants hard to keep alive grown in pots. i tried with the native violets growing around my house, they were gone immediately. but i do have success if they stay outside in the shade. i guess cool temps and circulating breezes are very important. mosses however have simple requirements as long as they are kept in a closed terrarium. i love the lichens growing on tree branches. they seem to need high light and can dry out and go dormant, waiting for the next rain.

I think you should consider getting crazy about lichens too

i absolutely adore lichen and it erks me so that the air quality where i live basically only supports common green shield lichen and a few grey-ish look alikes, i suppose you could grow them in an air controlled terrarium but i imagine either having to buy air scrubbers or canned air would prove very costly.

I was recently at 8000ft on a mountain in Montana and Found a single rock all by itself covered in all different color lichens. Looked like it was a rock covered in coral in a reef. Absolutely blew my mind how beautiful it was.

This video came just at the right time for me. I was just out in the forest today collecting moss. I was quite surprised how much there was. It is really dry here in South Australia at the moment. The pine forest, where we walk, had a great collection of moss though. Now I am off to sort, clean and pack it all in my bins, ready for all the projects I have going. I made my first terrarium with local mosses in a wide mouth mason jar and it's already grown like CRAZY in two weeks. Thank you for the inspirational videos and for this one explaining what I found!

Thank you for the moss identification...I noticed the star moss groing here likes a certain consistancy of rotten wood to grow out of...like a rotten plank or grooved rotten log, and the badge type moss here likes a consistantly wet area. When collecting moss it helps to really look at what they are growing out of and moisture...I think you mentioned that.... Keep up the great videos.

Oh! By the way, this inspired me to go out yesterday and gather some mosses! I found 4 different types! I think one is the Badge Moss! I put it in a terrarium with some (purchased) springtails and a few Silver Maple branches (wind fallen) that were covered in their own moss and some lichen! I also found Thread Moss, and Sheet Moss and a small bit of what looks like it could be Fern Moss.

Enjoyed the video! Love mosses. All the mosses you show can be grown outside in pots under the right conditions the most important of which is water quality: distilled or reverse osmosis. If given the percentage of humidity, by daily spraying, most will handle 4 hours of direct sunlight. Do recommend shallow containers for the low growers and regular pots for the taller species such as the Hair Cap. While common names may not be exacting to species here is a list of what was shown, please note that other species within the genera shown may also be described under the common or vernacular name: Badge Moss: Plagiomnium insigne Fern Moss: Thuidium delicatulum Haircap Moss: Polytrichum commune Hypnum Moss: Hypnum cupressiforme Sphagnum Moss: Sphagnum (many species) Star Moss: Tortula ruralis Thread Moss: Bryum argenteum Liverwort: Marchantia polymorpha Special note on Sphagnum: can be grown in a cup of distilled water with the water level up to about 3/4 of the cup's depth in full sun. Water quality is essential: distilled only. Marchantia should be best grown to itself as it can overtake other bryophytes if it is happy with its culture. For city folk you may be able to find mosses growing in planters that are regularly watered, such as at a fast food restaurant or at plant nurseries. Happy hunting.

Thank you for doing all of your moss designs and providing this tutorial, it's created a new interest for me in moss in general. I've begun scouting around my local forested areas, identifying all the different types we have here, and really enjoying their low maintenance beauty. I also found out I have a ton of hypnum moss around my house, it seems to enjoy the spots where there is plenty of rain runoff, but doesn't stagnate necessarily, and also enjoys lots of light.

Kudos for the moss etiquette section. It is nice to see concern for the environment.

I was lucky enough to do the technical support and final typesetting for a Bryophytes book some years ago. You've inspired me to collect some from my surrounds and they are sitting waiting for a project now.

I'm glad you made this i have been looking for some detailed info for moss for quite sometime and gave up after not finding anything to help tell which type is which. this helped a ton

Now I know I have BADGE MOSS in my terrarium! I put it in a month or so ago and it’s already an inch tall. Looks like miniature vegetation making my mini figures look perfect!

As others have mentioned, a good vid would be mold management and how to make sure there aren't any mites or parasites in the collected moss.

Liverworts are really fascinating and are one of the oldest species of land-growing plants on the planet. There are liverwort fossils dating back 473 million years.

Hey, real quick question about keeping terrariums. Recently (about a month ago) I created a small terrarium using an old mason jar and some plastic wrap for the lid. I watched several of your videos beforehand and did some of my own research in order to make my terrarium as good as possible. It has since been doing quite nicely, although I have now noticed that algae has started to grow within the false bottom/aquifer. I haven’t been able to find any information online on how exactly this may impact my terrarium and have not seen the topic mentioned in any of your videos. If you, or any other commenter, could shed some light on what I should do (if anything) then that would be much appreciated. P.S. I love your channel. Keep up the good work!
