A Boxing Drill - Simple Movement and Punching
Спорт
www.myboxingcoach.com - I've said it before and I will say it again, simple works.
When developing boxing skills, even at the elite level, simple boxing drills are the staple of ever growing, ever developing boxer.
This boxing drill helps combine footwork movement with punching.
Ensure that you show commitment in bringing this type of boxing drill to your boxing training.
This boxing drill will bring bring benefits to the raw novice and the elite-level boxer.
My favourite part of the drill is that pivot combined with the lead hand uppercut, it's really slick and smart.
Don't forget and download your Beginner Boxer Toolkit (click the picture on the right). There's lots of info in there that will help you develop your boxing skills.
Questions and comments below please.
Cheers
Fran
PS - I need to stop saying 'OK'...sounding (and looking) more like Mr Garrison with every video

I'm in my late forties now and have done various martial arts over the years, but have been away from it for a long time (bad hips joints etc..). I have always wanted to learn boxing techniques, and to improve my mobility as I get older. Your videos have been a massive help to me, and my understanding of the physics and movement of boxing. Thank you

Best boxing coach on KZread I've seen!!!
I love the simple explanations of the little differences that actually make all the difference, like the timing for the pivot-hooks to either side. For me, that's great coaching - the things that observation and practice alone might never tease out. One question - what's the target for the uppercuts? Especially after the pivot to the left - what's the target for the left uppercut, which seems to be thrown from a long way around the opponent?
THANKS COACH FOR THE GREAT INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEO!!

Far the best site, far the best. Basics are explained and demonstrated. How I wish I'd found you earlier Sir. So much nonsense preached out there. Basics, basics, basics. I am 55, took up boxing as marshall arts left my knees knackered and I have a new lease of life and a fresh perspective and happiness. Thank you Sir.
Excellent stuff. This is the same as doing a pattern in traditional martial arts. Its a repeatable pattern that teaches you sensitivity to your technique and movement. It's funny because so many people trash talk forms but they can be very beneficial.

I love this! I'm going to use this on thursday when I coach my boxing class. Can you elaborate a bit on why you throw the left hook ON the pivot and the right hook AFTER the pivot? I suppose it is because of balance and needing the kinetic chain to be in place, but maybe there is more to it?
@MrRazmut
4 жыл бұрын
You need to drive off your back foot to give the rear hand hook good power, but you can't do that until you put your foot down so you have to pivot first. With a lead hand hook you're pivoting on top of your front foot so it acts like a centerpoint that you spin around while pivoting, which puts the bodymass that is spinning around your planted leg into the hook
Good
Cảm ơn một chia sẻ tuyệt vời về môn này
Fran the bad man Sands! another dope as fuck video. very impressive neutral head positioning when you drill my friend, you manage to perfectly throw your strike without turning the head even a bit. it's something that sounds minor but many top tier fighters still arent grasping in all facets be it mma, boxing or mt/ kickboxin.

I prefer legs as a rule, safer and better to throw shots afterwards (better balance)

Great video but when you're pivoting do you pivot first then throw a strike or strike first then pivot
Thanks so much for the amazing videos. I love your focus on footwork and PRECISE technique! I was working these footwork drills yesterday. My question is, when you’re pivoting to the left, do you usually throw a left punch first instead of a right? For example, I could definitely see throwing a Pivot Left, 3, 2 But would you ever want to throw Pivot Left, 2? Or does it just all depend on where your opponent is? I train for fitness. Still, I like to think about how everything applies in the ring.
@myboxingcoach

Hi Sue. thank you for watching. You can definitely follow a right hand with a pivot left. The shot goes and then the pivot. The thing about pivoting left, or to the lead hand side, is that you can pivot WITH the lead hand shot. Lead hand hook is especially effective. And yes, absolutely you can follow a pivot left with a 2 :-)

@@myboxingcoach Awesome. I've been working all of these drills and have the hang of them now. Of course, I'm sure all of that would fall apart in a real fight or sparring situation. 😉 But still fun to work on!!
Hey, new to boxing, like your channel very much! I'm training alone in my garage so i wanted to ask for how long should I do techniques from this video to build solid base? I have trained judo and karate for 10 years, had 5 years layoff and wanted to start boxing. ty

we split our week into four parts. monday only techniques, tuesday partnerwork and/or working at the punch bag, wednesday strength training and thursday working on punch bag or shadowboxing with weights. so you always have to include techniques in your training. and a little tip, if you are new in boxing, dont do it alone. you can do a lot of things wrong and you need someone to tell. otherwise you get some bad habits and its hard to get them out afterwards. and these videos alone are not enough. this guy for example explain things good but his footwork is not the best.
awesome channel !!! PS still wondering wheter or not is it pointless to try these drills _only at home_ I can't join my local gym right now

So on the moving two are you planting the right foot before throwing the cross or are you doing both at the same time? I've been confused on this for years.
Hi coach, I am beginner and not having boxing gym. So, I am following your beginner toolkit and adopting cycle 1. In this I am focused on footwork, punches and block and Perry. I have added this 4 drills into my regime and also doing some from JT beginner footwork. Do you provide some more drills to practice at home.

Hi Tushar. There will have been videos emailed to you. Thanks for your comments here and on the site...appreciated
Great tips. thanks. Going backwards it feels more natural for me to throw a 2-1 (with the right hand thrown with the back foot moving back and the jab thrown with the front leg moving back) rather than a 1-2. Any thoughts on this Fran?

Hey coach, got a question. Is it too late for me to get in the ring? I'm 26 but I have the heart and mindset to be fully disciplined and dedicated. Love working on skills at home but would love to get in the ring. Great lessons by the way keep them coming!

Nope - That age is fine. Get to the boxing club and get started
Is there a difference in the footwork and use of hips when throwing a punch when stationary in comparison to when throwing a punch when moving? For example, if you should use your left foot and rotate the hips when throwing a jab, how does that work or change when stepping? Thanks

It's about linking together individual skills Greg. There's videos on the channel and my site, it's a case of 'instills with drills'
Hello coach, watched most of your videos since i discovered you this month and i'm just getting in to boxing. My gym has this thing where i have to learn more before i spar there but i spar with my friends. From the southpaw vs orthodox, is there any way you would recommend me closing the distance without getting caught with a 1 or 2? Btw he is taller than me by a few inches probably heavier too

How often should you do this drill?
Hey Fran. A question, if you don't mind. On round 3, with the hook, why do you throw the left hook with the pivot, but the right hook after the pivot is completed?
@myboxingcoach
5 жыл бұрын
Very awkward pivoting right with the back hand, lead hand hooking and pivoting is more fluid.
@karlfarren
5 жыл бұрын
@@myboxingcoach Thanks, Coach, but I think you may have misunderstood my question. I meant the timing of the hook, not which hand to lead with. On the first pivot, to the left, you throw the lead hook AS you pivot, but on the pivot to the right, you completed the pivot first, THEN threw the hook. See what I mean? With respect, as always.
Some boxing trainers say that when going backwards, you should step back with right leg first and punch with right arm, then move left leg back and punch with left arm. In this video, your saying to step back with right leg whilst punching with left arm? Which is the actual correct way? Is there not one unified way that all trainers agree on with foot work? because every trainer on KZread seems to teach differently and I don’t want to pick up bad habits.
How long is that tape you’re standin on m8?
When you pivot to the right and throw the uppercut, do you have to pause just as you did when you threw the right hook?
@myboxingcoach
6 жыл бұрын
You can do it either way. If you let the uppercut go as you pivot it will be less powerful, but still a great shot.

Nice one mate pls keep the video short by giving useful tips & Techniques .
Hey coach. Are they any weaknesses to a southpaw? Is there a specific punch that a southpaw will have troubles against? A quick response would be highly appreciated. I have to spar the same southpaw who keeps kicking my ass in 2hours.
@myboxingcoach

Sorry...late. dominate ground to your left. Leading with the left hook is often underestimated against a southpaw.
@maristoldboys5466

Fran Sands I'm a southpaw and guys with good left hook are a pest in sparring. Hades 19 after the usual 1-2 pattern, try 1 feint 2 quick 3. Also the southpaw stance leaves the left side vulnerable to bodyshots. Livershots in particular, try to set it up. Unless he catches on and switches to Philly shell like Judah. Try quick overhand shots after you've tagged the body.

I’m a southpaw kickboxer slightly different,but one punch that I’m very weary off is a left hook,lot people say right hand that’s a load off bollocks,any good southpaw always goes right to stay away from power punch and kick my sport,and to set your left hand up behind the jab,so if time he’s jab right get southpaw with left hook,but lucky for me kickboxing I can stay more safer distance use legs lol,

@@johnrhodes9533 I have to disagree mate, I feel that most Southpaws have sparred countless Orthodox fighters and usually have more difficult when fighting another Southpaw. Just off the top of my head I remember Mcgregor saying after the first Diaz fight that he had difficulty with Diaz being a Southpaw, and for the 2nd fight he brought in nothing but lanky Southpaws.... Anyways, cheers mate
