A Blind Eland Running Straight To Lions

This Happened in Kusini Serengeti National Park in Tanzania,
there have been a few cases of either half blind or completely blind Elands in southern Serengeti perhaps is some kind of an outbreak or it comes from what they eat, may be there's some kind of an invasive plant they eat that causes that, we don't know yet, still under investigation.

Excellent sense of smell on that Eland. His nose kept him out of harm for a bit. People fail to remember, when one of the five senses goes, another one (or two) is elevated 2x what it naturally is. They already have amazing sense of smell and hearing. The fact that he was blind, increased his sense of smell hence why he was seemingly able to avoid the Lions, until his inevitable fate. He could smell them near him

The young eland was suffering from a fatal disease called Malignant Catarrhal Fever (MCF) that is caused by alcephaline herpesvirus 1 (AlHV-1) found in Wildebeests or the ovine herpes virus - 2 (OvHV-2) found in sheep. Since this happened in Southern Serengeti, the former is most likely the culprit although sheep are to be found right at the border with Ngorongoro. The disease affects the eyesight of the affected animal making them ultra-sensitive to sunlight and even causing blindness like in this case. The disease is usually seen in March and April in northern Tanzania, about a month after the calving season of the great wildebeest Migration. This is purely because the main transmission method is through contact between the infected animals and the newly dropped wildebeest calves or their afterbirths and the disease matures in the infected animals about a month or two after contact is made. It has no known vaccine or treatment and death is almost certainly a guarantee so in this case the lions did the Eland a favour!

Why didn't they rip it apart? The one lion was so merciful, his cuts oxygen for it to die and then eat ?

Five full minutes, and not only did the lions not kill the eland, but they didn't even draw blood. Are they that inept?

These are three young male lions probably brothers and very young still so probably recently ejected from their pride - out on their own making a kill. I'd say 2.5 yrs old.

I do not believe it was really blind.....I think it did just not see the lions hiding because the lions have a perfect camoflage.....even rangers did not notice them when they were lying 5 meters away from them in another video and there were 5 full grown lions and there were not to be seen in the high yellow grass because of their perfect camoflage

If this eland were an oryx or a sable, these three lions woulda been gored to death. Elands, impalas, kudus and wildebeests rarely fight back.
