As someone who loads munitions on jets, I can confirm that the main issue with putting gun pods on every station isn't the recoil or weight, but having the wiring in order to operate all the stations. Especially with the A-10A since it is 100% analog with controls for munitions.

Somewhere, an A-10 is being fitted with multiple SUU-23/As for an experimental run. It labours along the runway, eating up every inch of tarmac before taking off. It's sluggish and ungainly, even for a Hog, but it manages to make it to the target zone. The pilot lines up the shot and presses the trigger. There are pictures of an air national guard F4 with five SUU-16/A pods, and another with eleven SUU-11/A pods mounted three to a pylon. Short of the problem that other guy mentions of not having enough mechanisms to trigger that many guns individually, I gotta think an A-10 could carry at least as many as an F4

I think the question here isn't "can the a10 carry ten more guns?", it's "could the a10 airframe SURVIVE 11 guns firing at once?"...

@@blebcat In the UK the RAF used to use a chemical plant in Northern UK for dummy bomb runs. The plant asked them to stop because of some of the stuff they had on site, (They had a huge Chlorine tank on site, and they used Mustard Gas in the process of producing Viagra of all things, though they had to use that as they made it).

Each M61 on its own weighs up to 230 lbs, not including ammo. I think the issue would be the recoil. Recoil already is a limiting factor for the GAU-8.

The gau 8 actually puts out more thrust than its engines!

6:23 Fun fact: The early MiG-27's gun has so much recoil that it noticeably damaged the airframe when fired for more than a couple of seconds. There were cases of instrument panels falling out, landing lights breaking, canopies being ejected, landing gear not working, all caused by the gun. To the point where they had to reduce the rate of fire.

If I recall correctly, gravity is only 9.8 n, which means the gun can be used to lift the damn plane off the ground, given that the weight doesn’t exceed 40kn.

When that missile hit, it was almost exactly the amount of damage an A-10 in Kuwait that got hit by a SAM and made it back to base. The engine cover is at the air muesem by me.

The issue is those two pylons are the only ones wired to control the gun pods. On another note, the centerline pylon is for a fuel tank during ferry flights.

@@jeremyortiz2927 I mean during ww2 the stinger LMG was made by marines by Frankensteining together the bipod of a BAR, a browning that was meant to be mounted in a wing, a M1 grand for a grip, and some other stuff. It was so effective that they considered putting it into production. Tho it was the marines.

According to some internet digging they say the effective take off weigth an a10 can carry is 16k pounds worth of load, so yes if we take the 2k pound per gun pod it should be able to take off with 8 gun pods. Also it would be pretty effective at mimicing the russian cobra, after all all you had to do is fire all guns at once and the plane would just stop midair :D

@@stuffjunk5019 well it can't. An A-10 could take some 23mm, never a direct missile hit. That's a story made up by the fighter mafia (yes they exist, Google them it's really interesting imo). All the A-10s you do see limping back to base completely shredded are one in a hundred. But in WT it should be pretty good considering the absurd amount of countermeasures

@@belox9246 Well obviously it isn't going to take a hit from a 200lb warhead from a medium/long SAM, but it has a long history of getting hit with manpads and making it home without issue. A stinger has about half the explosives as an AIM-9, and if you look at the manpad hits they barely damage the plane. I'm positive it can take a hit from a FOX-2 without issue.

I remember I could load the A10 up with gun pods in the game H.A.W.X. That was ridiculous. It was just a literal sky mop.

well, the recoil of vulcans if mounted on wing(especially wing tips) would possibly be problematic for flying, and the dead weight of these gunpods does not seems too cost-effective.

Yeah the parasitic drag along with the weight would be an issue.... And of course the recoil would likely cause you to stall since the main gun alone had the power to counter just one of the engines already.

Also torque. The main gun (and the engines) are angled towards the center of the A-10 to minimize torque. The gunpods aren't.

Jokes aside the hardpoints and the load an A-10 can carry is apart of the reason it’s still in service. Though it does admittedly have problems.

Day 154: Phly, you should play the Hawk III Chinese fighter; 900lbs of bombs in a biplane at 1.0 that you can dogfight in after dropping. Totally balanced.

The gua8 puts out 3/4 of the total thrust of both engines. The 2 20mms combined are stronger. Weight wise it can carry a full load, however the recoil would be something like 7 times the thrust of the plane so would be impractical. But that Russian mig-23 gun still holds the highest thrust to weight ratio of any of the guns. If you used it jetpack joyride style it would give a 50g acceleration and you'd jump mount Everest.

These engines were also on the S-3 Viking. Civilian version is the CF34 found on many business and commercial jets.

You can only mount any given weapon or other external system to a station that is wired to the avionics that controls the weapon or system. For instance, if you carry AGMs, 1 additional station is required for the camera and tracking pod that guides the AGM to its target.

@@fidelcastro9869 it’s probably just not properly implemented in the game. I don’t have access to see for myself. If you do, take a look at loadout without any external stores and then compare it to the loadout for AGMs. There should be a targeting and tracking pod. I don’t remember which station, but I think it’s 2nd or 3rd inboard on either wing.

Hey Phly, I know that things are crazy cause of the new update But maybe once things chill out and you need something to cover? You should check out the Italian C13 T90 It was the vehicle that got me my phirst nuke, and I’d like to see it and the ABUL/74 on the channel! The combo means in any terrain you can get to a sneaky spot, and scout phor tons of SP (Day 36) (But play the Hawk III first)

To answer the sound byte question, I wouldn’t mind new tank crew voices but I hope they never change the plane ones. “Hole in your left wing” and “on time on target everything’s fine how are you” are perfect

Day 22: Phly you should play the Strv M-42 DT. It has a 3.8 second autoloader with 5 shells, the turret traverse is great, and its surprisingly survivable Plus the APHE can pen pretty much anything from the front at its br (except for those damned jumbos)

it does not appear as though they have taken account of the A-10's natural durability there should be a option to have half the wing blown off yet for it still be able to fly giving you the chance to make it back to the airfield

Back in the live server. I used to get a bug where if I dropped my bombs quick enough I got 1 extra "ghost bomb" it wouldn't explode but it was still visible.

So Context - before considering the gun, or the drum holding them and the chain linking - the 2000 rounds per gun of 20mm x 102mm weigh approx 1200lb in ammo per gun

at this burst mass, you gotta be on the moon after 1 sec of firing

You need to try the 30mm 4-barrel gun pods that they tried out on the F-16s. You might need to combine two adjacent pylons so you could mount 4 pods. Try that one on for size.

each 30mm AP projectile is around 400g, The GAU avenger fires at 3900rpm, that's 65 rounds a second which amounts to 26 KG/s with the GAU-8 alone, + the vulcans which fires 100 g projectiles at 6000 rpm that's an extra 20kg/s with both of em. so about 46 kg/s of burst mass with that loadout.

doing a little bit of math; (i rounded burst total up to 59kg/second) 59/4= 14.75kg/second for each gun on the F4E. now take 14.75*2 for the two 20mm cannons on the A10 and you get 29.5kg/second for those guns alone. the question is what would the burst mass of the GAU 30mm add to that?

Its also not about total take-off weight, its about how much each hard-point can support. what does each of those pods weigh and how much power does each gun require to run? Remember that electrical power is a finite resource.

Full depleted uranium round belt burst mass from the gau8 is 31.5~ lb/sec. Full HE belts however, is 54.1 lb/sec. Almost beats the phantom by itself!

The goal with the A-10 is to strike at medium altitude,like 1000meters for example and dive at the target in a long angle,like the hypotenuse of a triangle,with pratice,you will be able to fire a much closer range but never go low with that plane 😂

Me who flies this A-10C II (More modernised version of A-10A) in DCS World confirm that it CAN takeoff with full loadout and full fuel tank (while flying like a log, but it's possible) The same with the A-10A which is basicly the same aircraft but with old tech from 1972 There're no additional 20mm guns to attach as a loadout implemented in DCS World, but I don't think they are heavier than 2000 lb bombs that you can attach on all pylons and fly still while having a full fuel tank. I'm starting to think that if you attach a small light tank on top it WILL STILL FLY! (L3 for ex.)

I used to crew these in the air force (I was a dcc 2004-2010, DM/Osan/Luke). The jet slows down just by firing the gun scares the shit out student pilots every time. Also, flying with even half the full treated payload usually required a centerline tank and the weight of that took all of that extra fuel and the full length of the runway just to get off the ground. It was rare to see a hawg with a full payload (and one or two pylons were always dead or had issues lol). I also crewed f16s for the last year and a half and a full Vulcan was fuel problems even for a low bypass engine. I forgot the weight of the vulcans but I'll tell your right now, no fkn way A10 pylons would hold those let alone the recoil lol. Only 4 through 8 hold anything beefy, but 5,6,and 7 would eaten by a centerline tank. And it's not just weight, it's a ton of drag. Plus you'd have to figure out a way to ensure the drums emptied equally so you didn't flip the jet. Firing less than 2 simultaneously would probably spin the yet. Honestly, the recoil would likely tear the pylon off. Haha. That jet is a bad mfer but it's still. The jet was literally built around the gau 8 and no one has been able to recreate it. Hilarious idea tho. Oh duh... You're also lacking all the hydraulics. Aiming seems like it would be problematic too. Youd have to angle the guns to the center which would just make the recoil problem worse for like 3 other reasons. Bonkers
