99 Mustang GT with Nemak Part 3 - Installing the crankshaft & ARP Side Bolts

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This video I go over some of the steps I do to install the crankshaft and ARP side bolts. Its also a good idea to make sure you have the correct amount of crankshaft endplay. If you don’t have a dial indicator then make sure the crank moves slightly forward and backward.

I'm happy I found your channel. I'm building my first 4.6 and I happen to find ya in my search for answers! BadgerBuilt is now subscribed! Great video and knowledge!

When you were prying the crank forward, I don’t think you should be prying on the cap with the thrust bearing in it. That defeats the purpose of the prying.

Is it only that one dust bearing that goes on the top half? What about the lower half?

Great video and super easy to understand. One question though: if you put everything together to find the crank end play is over 10 thousandths how do you handle that?

How much over 0.010? If its only a couple thou over then you might be okay just sending it haha. I have a video on here about inspecting 4.6 cranks and in it I show where the thrust bearing surface on the crank can be worn down. If that is the case then the crank either needs repaired or replaced. To repair it they weld material on and then machine it back to original size. I have seen a lot of cranks wear in that area.

@@JohnSmithRacing awesome thanks for the reply. I’m not actually building the engine just yet, just wanted know hypothetically. I was thinking too much end play was an indication of crank problems, just didnt know if there was a thicker thrust bearing option or something like that

Question. Building a 2 bolt iron block 4.6. In the OEM procedure, it calls for tightening the jam screws and side bolts b4 the main studs..it still doesn't seem right to me. Any insight would be greatly appreciated

I always tighten the main studs and then move on to the side screws and bolts. Most of the manuals that I have used say to do it in that order. I have came across manuals with mistakes. One of my Ford service manuals has the spark plug wire orientation wrong. I learned that the hard way a long time ago haha

Back with another question 😬 On my 99 2v out of my Turbo Town Car, the rear main seal plate appears to not have a gasket. I was wondering what you would recommend using?

Yes, if you can find a good Kellogg crankshaft, they are hard to come by.

@@JohnSmithRacing awesome yeah I have one found along with factory 03-04 cobra rods and plan on getting a set of diamond pistons. Didn't think I would have any ipswich running a Kellogg crankshaft but wasn't 100%

Here is an estimate: Forged rods and pistons $1500, ARP fasteners $600, gaskets and seals $200, and machine work $500-$1000 depending on what needs done.
