This week, I turn a ring box that makes an ideal project for those turners who love decorating their work as much as it is ideal for those who prefer plain items. When finished, this wood turning project will make an excellent Christmas, birthday or other gift for friends and family.
As a three or four piece project, you could use two or three contrasting species of wood to complete the project, light and dark, coloured and plain. Or if you are adventurous, why not try turning it using a hybrid blank.
For those who enjoy decorating, there are tall sides begging to be coloured, embellished, textured or left plain. The disc in the top is optional, but a textured, coloured, embellished contrasting wood, or hybrid inlay would make a very striking addition, and an interesting top-piece.
The column onto which rings are placed need not be this tall, of course. A highly polished piece though, when the box is first opened will be a splendid centre-piece.
Enjoy the project, and when you complete it, please share a picture with me on my Facebook page.
I used mostly Robert Sorby tools and Axminster lathe and chucks

Hi Martin, I've been watching your videos, for the last year or so. In fact your bowl project was the first ever piece I turned when starting out. This is the 1st time I've posted a comment here, I have found your instructional videos to both easy to follow and very informative. Thanks again for the help and good luck with all of your projects :)

Just don’t get a small lathe (8x12 ) like I did because as soon as you start turning you gonna want to get one bigger trust me on this. Good luck on future turning

@@donaldtrabeaux1305 Agree totally. Upgraded to a slight bigger "small" lathe but then soon bought a big one. Haven't looked back since.

Hi The size really depends on what you want to turn. I bought a second hand one that needed some repair and that was fine for a while (ok to learn on). I found that the variable speed lever got in the way and eventually upgraded to an Axminster 1628. I can do everything on this lathe as the headstock swivels so chuck height is not important. It also has variable speed control and runs off a 13amp plug. It was not cheap about £2000. but worth it. If you only want to make pens or small projects then this is OTT. I would recommend finding a turner in your area and have a lesson before choosing a lathe for yourself. Other considerations are dust removal and lighting. If you are getting tools buy quality makes, a few will get you started plus a sharpening station of some sort. Do not have it in a small damp shed but a dry garage if possible. Hope this helps and does not put you off.

@@ericmcrae7758 Couldn't agree more. My big lathe is also a 1628 and it is superb. You gave some really good sound advice that anyone starting out should listen to. I had lessons from a friend who is s superb turner and also Colwin Way at Axminster's itself The courses are not cheap but in my opinion worth every penny.
Thanks for the video. How long does it take for the sanding sealer to dry?
Martin - great vids! Curious - where do you buy your enamel maker's mark badges?
Lovely job nice little box 👌👌 I’m going to be looking for a new set of jaws what make are the ones in your video Cheers Brian
Awesome! Thank you for your videos. What kind of sanding sealer do you use? Shellac based or cellulose? Why would you choose one versus the other?
I've got to tell you... I really miss your videos.
Yet again Martin, another great piece of turning. Can I ask where you get the enamel name badges from Please? See you at Harrogate my friend....
