#95 Glass-like Finishing with Lacquer, Sealer and Drying Oil (Woodturning)
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
In this week's woodturning video, I look at answering a viewer question about why and how I use an oil in my finishing regime on this coloured sycamore bowl.
I also look closely at finishing technique tips with a lacquer and getting a glass-like quality using a combination of Hampshire Sheen and Yorkshire Grit products.
A near perfect finish like this takes time, so don't rush it when using your Hampshire Sheen lacquer, and don't get the Yorkshire Grit too hot when using it.
Skip to:
3:42 for the Oil
5:30 for sealer
8:41 for lacquer
I hope you learn some of the finer parts of my finishing process in this video.
Here are the bits of kit I used:
Robert Sorby Excelsior Bowl Gouges
Simon Hope sanding arbors
Intrinsic Colour Collection of water based dyes
Hampshire Sheen Foodsafe Danish Oil (which is a drying oil), Pre-Thinned Cellulose Sanding Sealer, Clear Gloss Lacquer
Yorkshire Grit original and microfine.

Amazing finish Martin. A tin of your lacquer is going to the top of my "want" list. ❤️ it. 😀
Martin your finishing is easily the best I have seen on youtube, great job as always!
Merveilleux! A true artist concerned with beauty and natural expression of the wood. Levis Canada
Thank you very much. I'm going to have to give this technique a try. Happy New Year :)
Thanks Martin for the info re: Yorkshire grit. I've been looking for a finish like that for years. I turned a Padouk bowl and use the grit, WOW!!! Again Many thanks. Don C

Thanks Donald. I'll tell Glyn who makes Yorkshire Grit you like the product. I make Hampshire Sheen, the finishing waxes. ;-)
That has a perfect gloss finish Martin. I would never had thought about putting oil under a lacquer. Stunning job.
thanks for the video
4 times I have watched this video in the last week just to get it right in my mind. At some point I am going to have to pick up the lacquer and start spraying! Need to visit a certain shop and get two pots of grit too!
Superb Martin, unbelievable finish and beautiful colouring! :D
Mighty fine finishing Martin. The Bowl,as a whole, looks stunning mate......
That buyer must be rich. Beautiful finish!!! Well explained process. Thanks
Absolutely incredible finish. Thank you so much for showing this, loads of online forum posts warn against mixing danish oil and sanding sealers. You’ve got it bloody spot on mate I can’t wait to give this a try🙌

Thanks for your kind words. As the manufacturer of these products, I know what they can do. I find it is always best asking the manufacturer advice on most things. The hive mind of the internet is not ideal really . . . Ask a simple question to a group of people and you'll get so many different answers and a lot of them contradict each other!
Just found you! Epic project. Very fine work and results. Will most def be watching more over here on the other side of the pond!
Hi Martin....beautiful bowl...omg my heart was in my mouth when it dropped off the chuck...full credit to you for not throwing it across the workshop...I must give the lacquer a go...so worth the extra effort....All the best.....Andy
I remember when you were starting out formulating the original Hampshire Sheen and now you have a whole line of products. Good on ya. I can't wait to try them all.
18 dislikes always amazes me how people can be jealous of a skill even if they did not like the colour it's beyond that, it's the process you can choose your own bloody colour we'll done work of art

31 unhappy or very sad people, now who, probably do nothing themselves and spend their lives criticizing those that do.
Precioso, muchas gracias por compartir 😊👍🏻
beautiful bowl, great work. I hope I can get to your same level of skill one day.
i don't normally leave comments, but I felt compelled to say that bowl came out amazing. Very well done, great work
And that is why some items can cost a small fortune. If only everyone that bought a beautiful piece like this watched your videos. They would see the true value of the item and hopefully care for it even more and not question why it costs so much. Loving your videos. Keep ‘er lit and keep them coming.
Excellent video Martin as I just got in your Oil, sealer, and lacquer and now I can't wait to give it a go. Lovely coloring as always, I think that is the hardest part of the entire piece is getting the coloring right and understanding how it is going to look before you apply the finish. Looking forward to the next video, I enjoy each and every one.
great job as always ,i was waiting for the bleeps when you dropped the bowl but the pro you are you just kept going till the end ,great finish.
I just love the finish. I’m happy I tripped across your channel. The bowl is absolutely beautiful. I really like the colour contrast between the inside and outside as well. You’ve hooked me so I’m just going to have to subscribe.
Subbed for sure. And I'd like to say that I really enjoy the background music, too.
I gasped when it dropped! In Texas we say...”Bless your heart!”
really beautiful piece Martin!! sometimes...it's the simple pieces that are truly stunning. The color plays nicely, the chatoyancy is brilliant and the overall effect is just plain gorgeous. going to have try get my hands on some of your newer products and try some things with them!!
everyone video you post is awesome. everything explained well, you seriously deserve more subscribers.
Very nice, stunning finish. The problem of taking days to finish, it ties up the chucks for that time. Thanks James
@msabansmith

It does if you let it take up that time. If you use a chuck mounted faceplate, you can remove the piece to lacquer the outside. And you can remove the piece from the chuck when finishing the inside and replace it later. Just remember to mark the foot and chuck so you can replace it easily.

@@msabansmith Thanks
J aime beaucoup votre thecnique, je vais essayer 👍👍👍👏👏👏
Perfect timing on this video Martin as I am using a lacquer finish on my current project. I'm on a very tight budget so I can't afford all of the fine products you use. I've found that I can polish the lacquer with fine grit automotive rubbing compound to bring out a near perfect finish. I add a coat or two of carnauba wax to protect the shine from fingerprints. I just wanted to let some of your viewers that one can get close to your spectacular results on a shoestring budget. Excellent video my man, can't wait to see you next.
Think I may have seen you colouring this bowl at Makers. I've been enjoying using lacquer, but am very much still learning. Great to see the process you use. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks so much for the video! I use this particular one as the motivation to try dyes and have really had a blast!!!!! Thanks again! Oh, and i had the same mistake with my last polish after 10 coats of lacquer and had to cut it all the way back to bare wood and start over hah! Weird coincidence!
