#95 Glass-like Finishing with Lacquer, Sealer and Drying Oil (Woodturning)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this week's woodturning video, I look at answering a viewer question about why and how I use an oil in my finishing regime on this coloured sycamore bowl.
I also look closely at finishing technique tips with a lacquer and getting a glass-like quality using a combination of Hampshire Sheen and Yorkshire Grit products.
A near perfect finish like this takes time, so don't rush it when using your Hampshire Sheen lacquer, and don't get the Yorkshire Grit too hot when using it.
Skip to:
3:42 for the Oil
5:30 for sealer
8:41 for lacquer
I hope you learn some of the finer parts of my finishing process in this video.
Here are the bits of kit I used:
Robert Sorby Excelsior Bowl Gouges
Simon Hope sanding arbors
Intrinsic Colour Collection of water based dyes
Hampshire Sheen Foodsafe Danish Oil (which is a drying oil), Pre-Thinned Cellulose Sanding Sealer, Clear Gloss Lacquer
Yorkshire Grit original and microfine.

Thanks for your kind words. As the manufacturer of these products, I know what they can do. I find it is always best asking the manufacturer advice on most things. The hive mind of the internet is not ideal really . . . Ask a simple question to a group of people and you'll get so many different answers and a lot of them contradict each other!

  • @msabansmith

It does if you let it take up that time. If you use a chuck mounted faceplate, you can remove the piece to lacquer the outside. And you can remove the piece from the chuck when finishing the inside and replace it later. Just remember to mark the foot and chuck so you can replace it easily.

Perfect timing on this video Martin as I am using a lacquer finish on my current project. I'm on a very tight budget so I can't afford all of the fine products you use. I've found that I can polish the lacquer with fine grit automotive rubbing compound to bring out a near perfect finish. I add a coat or two of carnauba wax to protect the shine from fingerprints. I just wanted to let some of your viewers that one can get close to your spectacular results on a shoestring budget. Excellent video my man, can't wait to see you next.

Oh, and i had the same mistake with my last polish after 10 coats of lacquer and had to cut it all the way back to bare wood and start over hah! Weird coincidence!
