#94 Scorched and Embellished Ash Vase Woodturning Project
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Back again after a fairly long break with a scorched and embellished ash vase woodturning project.
It was turned between centres, then hollowed, coloured and burnt deeply with a blow torch.
The grain was then artistically embellished with Hampshire Sheen Gold and Bronze Embellishing Waxes. Here is a full list of the tools used:
Spindle Roughing Gouge from unknown maker;
Les Thorne's Round Skew;
Axminster 3/8" Bowl Gouge;
Robert Sorby 10mm Spindle Gouge;
Robert Sorby Sovereign Hollowing Tool with Little Hogger Tip
Simon Hope Pro Sander with 25mm head;
2 generic blow torches;
Generic Brass Brush;
'Ruby' from Hampshire Sheen's Intrinsic Colour Collection
Hampshire Sheen Gold, Bronze and Black Embellishing Waxes

Very nice
I find your videos soothing and inspirational.
Great vids!
Martin, there is not much more for me to say as it has all been said previously. Color, shape and commentary all excellent. Very good production. Camera work and editing very good. You show just the right amount of each process and explain extra detail. A good example for all You Tube producers. Keep up the good work and thank you for sharing from Marietta, Georgia, USA..
Yet again Martin you are Master of your Craft, thank you mate.......
Great to have you back turning...lovely vase!
Again, welcome back. I really do take a lot away from your videos. Nice vase by the way!
It is a true pleasure to get to see you creating again. Your skills, artistry, and personality always make me smile. Thank you.
Nice looking vase some great color ideas and also great to have you back.
Great to see you back again Martin. Thoroughly missed and enjoyed seeing all that thought process back. Makes a far more interesting video when the whole plan isn't there to start with. Like the simple contrast in the whole piece.
I really like that Martin! Thanks for sharing your process.
Looks great Martin - look forward to seeing more from you.
Beautiful piece Martin, always enjoy your work!...Bruce
Thank you for sharing. I have learned so much about finishing techniques from you. Keep up the beautiful work.
A really lovely vase, stands out with the beautiful dark outside and that rich red inside. So pretty xxx
Very nice mate,love the thought processes and techniques which all together lead to a superb finished product 👍💪

Awesome piece Martin, good to see you again thanks for sharing.
Very nice vase, the embellishing waxes really make it. Thanks James
Looks great and good to see you back.
That's really attractive. The waxes lifted that beautifully.
A gorgeous piece Martin. Especially the way the embellishing wax brings out the beauty of the wood. ❤️it 😀
Loving it Martin

Great to see you back, Martin!
Welcome back, nice project.
I like it. A simple shape, but the color and embellishing really make it a nice presentation. Well done. You have a great eye, and the ability to pull it off.
Well done Martin and good to see you in the work shop 👍👍
nice work martin. great to see you back a the lathe and posting videos for us. it was nice to see you at makers central too. thanks jason
Absolutely superb piece Martin. Cheers Mike
Nice one Martin a really nice and different piece. Good to finally say hello as well at Makers Central and loving the new purple wax!
Good to see you back on KZread, scorching looks great !
Very nice Martin. Stunning piece the black and red go together well.
Very nice, you make it look so easy.
Beautiful work Martin. The combination of colors, waxes and burning were perfect!!
While I had some time this morning, decided to check out on of your videos in my quest for more knowledge. Been planning to do a project this weekend with burning some Ash for a challenge set by Tournage Dubois, so saw this video and thought I have to watch. That is a great looking vase. Love how the grain is accentuated by the embellishing wax. Thank you for sharing Martin
Super video. Will be sharing with the students as it’s nice to see a simple shape completed to a high standard. It’s not always about complex hollow forms, inlay, segmented, multiple timber, turned, carved and re-mounted 4 times pieces of work.
Very nice mate.
Good to see you back at the lathe Martin. David
Just beautiful, really nice artistic touches that make it incredible. You have giving me some inspiration. I make my own wax, polish, sanding sealer and abrasive pastes. Now I may have to try to make some embellishing waxes as well, they really add that nice finishing touch that emphasizes the wood grain. Great job, thank you for sharing with us.
Nice one!
Hi Martin, It was good to see this masterclass with your hallmark ‘follow me through’ thought process. Having done my one to one day with you recently and focussed on hollowing a piece of Ash it served as a very useful refresher. It’s nice to see you back on You Tube. David
Hi Martin....Really like the burnt and burnished look on the Ash and the crimson interior really sets it off.. I will give that idea a go myself. Great video.....All the best.....Andy
Thanks for sharing.. I've been saving this until I had time to view lol.. Great project.. Full View Like 554
Good to see you back at the lathe Martin! Excellent tutorial as usual from you! The vase looks awesome! The color combination is spot on as usual from you! Hopefully with your busy schedule, you will be able to get more lathe time in the future!
The finished result is really nice. I can see that sitting on a shelf.
I’ve gotta try this.!

Thanks for watching. I hope it turned out OK for you.
Love it!
the bronze wax makes it really interesting..ash is great for that sort of use. it came out really nice looking. There were a couple points when you were clearing the base and thinning things down, i was really liking the looks of the beading and layers there and thought you could have left a foot on it, making it almost a goblet like thing But I knew you were going to take it clear off, so I found myself trying to make a mental note to toy with some of the angles and things you'd created there to see what I might get out of it.. .
The gateway arch
Nice suit for a somewhat boring wood. Good job!
As always a great piece, how to handle it soon.
How did you make it waterproof on the inside
really beautiful. I've been following your vids for quite some time, even though I am still uncertain about some procedures, especially when to use Yorkshire grit: before or after applying embellishing wax? I know it might seem a trivial question, but I've only been turning a few months. Thanks :)

Hiya. Thanks for asking. Grit is always used as part of the sanding process. An easy way to remember the order of things: Hampshire Sheen products (apart from the colours!) are *finishes* so they go on at the end, when everything else is . . . Um . . . Finished. 😃

I thought “oh no what’s that disgusting yellow stuff?!” but it came out really beautiful
Very nice, indeed! Now I know what to do with my own piece of ash, nearly the same dimentia . . . . urmmm, oh. Oops. 'Dimension'. {;-)
