Lovely work :) what I would give to be able to play in that workshop for a few days. I just bought a barrel and have gone through hours of videos when all I needed to do was to watch this channel. Thank you.

how did you attach the shelf to the inside of the barrel?

Excellent work sir!! I have a couple questions: 1) If I just make a single door, would I still need to reinforce with a wooden strip? Secondly, quantity of epoxy used and brand and the grit of sandpaper to sand?

If you tighten the barrel after it has dried, the strip isn't absolutely necessary. but it allows you to re-curve the door during the gluing process, as the doors will relax once cut out. I show how to tighten the barrel in my video titled "Wine barrel cabinet". and I use Art Resin epoxy, 4 different pours totaling 4 liters. Sand paper grit I use 120 all the way up to 3000 grit using a 5" random orbital sander. and thank you for the kind words!!

Where can I get plans for how to make a wine barrel from old wood

  • @bigbenms6

Can you explain why you took the time to router in and bend the wood strip then sand them all flush? Have a barrel and deciding what to do with it.

Hello Ben! Wine barrels are wet vessels, when they dry out, they shrink and start falling apart. The glued in wood strips on the doors and door openings prevent the doors from changing shape when the barrel eventually dries at the customers climate. I've seen barrels take up to 4 months to completely dry.

@@BoujeeBarrels Thanks for lightning response ....Hmmm never heard of that company. SO I guess Home Depot is unlikely. I guess this is a labour of love since it takes over 40 hours to make all this stuff. The ones I see selling in and around our area are maybe 400-500 bucks which I doubt would cover the kind of labour you are putting into these art pieces. Well never mind the labour the parts seem high end as well. I think the hinges are primo and the wheels are a great idea. I have seen people put tops on the barrels but some of them found that makes them a bit tippy since the base is small. Maybe the wine barrels are a bit wider a base so they are more stable. These would be great in a bar or restaurant... well if they ever re open... or maybe some sort of retailer who could at least pay you a decent amount considering the labour and attention to detail. Homeowners are gonna want to pay very little.

@@puddytat62 They are an American based company, but they have a warehouse in Toronto, so you can get parts next day, they ship air freight overnight. Amazing selection. No one else stocks these special nails. And yeah, I've created a product that allows me to use all of my skills and have hopefully created a new expanding market for high-end home bars. So far I've sold 5 of these to home owners. They are also surprisingly sturdy, with very little chance to tip over since they weight 120+ lbs. and funny enough!, I'm currently building a unit for a restaurant as we speak. It will be a much simpler build (around 14 hours). I'll post another DIY on youtube for this build. no 'special' tooling will be required. 😊

@@BoujeeBarrels Well I would say that regardless of it only taking 14 hours that the skills required to complete a commercial project like this are still way way above normal and thus should be charged accordingly. You should not only be compensated for your time but also for the skill level that is likely few and far between trades people who could do all the work. The splines alone are way above what others do. Do love the hinges. Are those local or made yourself? I've seen some pretty chinsy hinges by other barrel cabinet makers but yours seem very much in keeping with the style .. Looking forward to seeing the restaurant barrel project
