Converting a wine barrel into a lovely bar cabinet

Ойын-сауық

Step-by-step conversion of a simple wine / whiskey barrel into a storage cabinet. I love the timeless style of a good barrel, and carving out a door and shelf make it a much more practical piece of furniture.
Tips:
- A barrel with eight hoops will work a tad better than a barrel with only six hoops - the extra hoops help the door maintain its shape / strength a little better.
- Make sure the hoops are secured with at least a few screws before cutting and drilling the door out - if you let the barrel completely fall apart, good luck putting it back together!
- You'll want a screw on every stave in the door, as they will fall out otherwise. The rest of the barrel remains under tension, and only needs a handful of screws to keep it together.
- I have never seen a drill bit come untwisted before... suppose these things happen when you get the clearance drill bits at Harbor Freight.

Latch - amzn.to/3IHsY2U

I loved your work. Specially I loved the revolving shelf which I didn't see any any other converting a wine barrel videos in KZread. Can I ask what is the wide of the door in this bar cabinet (by inch or by number of wood staves)?

Thanks! It's 10 staves across - of course, the staves aren't all a consistent size, but it's a good ballpark. The door is 24" around at the widest point

Thanks! I got the parts on Amazon, I put links to some of them in the description, and there are plenty of similar options if the exact ones aren't available

I’m planning on making one but have questions… what inch screws did you use and size drill bit? Any lessons learned?

For the screws to hold the rings on, you'll want them to be just a little shorter than the combined thickness of the rings and the wood staves (so they don't poke through to the interior - I think it was just under an inch on this barrel). For the hinges, I just used the included screws in the pack, and you can grind off any excess that pokes into the barrel, as you don't want to be too stingy with the structural screws. The smallest drill bit will probably be one of the smallest you can find, and should be the diameter of the solid core of the screws, or smaller. The larger drill bit (for drilling the rings and not the wood) should be the diameter of the threads of the screws or a little larger (so the screw can easily pass through ) but smaller than the screw head of course. Lessons learned? Not all drill bits are created equal! Get some decent cobalt bits, not just the cheapest set from Harbor Freight. Take your time, pick a good barrel to start with and you should be good!

Thanks for the response and the information. Picked up a barrel recently which I’m excited to start working on soon.

I added screws to every ring to lock everything in place, but I didn't need a screw in every stave.

What was the cut out dimension for the door?

On this barrel at least, it ended up being just about 24" x 24" - this was decided based on the positions of the rings for the height, and the staves for the width, so it'll vary a bit depending on the dimensions of your barrel!
