John “Pondoro” Taylor summed the 9.3x62mm up pretty well when he said in his book African Rifles and Cartridges that “There isn’t really a great deal to say about it. Everybody found it so generally satisfactory that there wasn’t anything to start a discussion.”

9,3x62 was invented by Otto Bock in 1905 in Berlin. Bock was a german gunsmith. The cardridge should serve german settlers in Africa. IT was built for a standart mauser 98 System. There is nothing skandinavian concerning the 9,3x62. Greetings from Austria.

Gunsmith Otto Bock in Berlin designed that cartridge, especially for use in the colonies of then Imperial Germany... There are few rounds that can match the 9,3x62 for versatility, practicality and effectiveness. A big plus was/is that it can be used in Mauser 98 standard actions.
@MarriedFucker
3 жыл бұрын
@@Karamojo7mm the best all-a rounder is the .375H&H. Far superior due to the ballistics and the overall performance characteristics.
The smaller 9.3x57 is the Scandinavian cartridge still produced by Norma and a nice little round, essentially your 8mm Mauser case necked to 9.3 [.366] Diameter. Your 9.3x62 was developed by German Gunsmith Otto Bock in 1905 to give German colonists in Africa a more powerful general purpose cartridge for all game found there. It became the most used medium bore in Africa. This caliber has taken every species of game in Africa including all the dangerous varieties.
Since 1984, I have considered 9.3x62 my favorite caliber for the Scandinavian Moose and Wild Boar Hunt. 9.3an has a good habit of always sending strong greetings to the target.

Definitely one of the best all around cartridges ever made. Bullet selection is limited but it can be loaded down to 35 Remington levels or knocking on the door of a 375 H&H. I've used it for everything from whitetail up to cape buffalo. That 286 gr bullet at 2300 fps will generally out penetrate the faster rounds and has very little blood shot meat. As a friend said one time, you can eat right to the hole.
I am from Sweden and I have its little brother, 9,3x57mm. That takes moose and wild boar down easily. It is known as a "potato thrower", but it delivers all the force into your target. Rarely shoots through. I do not shoot at anything beyond 100 meters (if you are in the woods in Sweden, even that distance is rarely seen). If I go to Africa one day, I would upgrade to the x62.
The beauty of the 9,3x62 (besides lacking magnum belt and having similar body diameter as 30-06 i.e. nice magazine capacity) is that the recoil is manageable. It is one of those wonderful cartridges when the receiving end gets more than you’d expect judging by recoil alone. From 375 H&H and upwards it becomes increasingly difficult to manage the recoil.

I like the 9.3 as its more like a solid push on your shoulder instead of a sharp crack. Also hits hard. Very good close range thick scrub gun
I have had the same gun in 35 Whelen for over 20 years an it takes deer with 250 grain with less unnecessary damage then lighter bullets.

Late seeing this, but one of my favorite cartridges. I own two rifles in 9.3x62. Hand loading really wakes it up too. I load the 286 grain bullets to 2500 FPS with ram shot big game, for 3960 ft lbs of muzzle energy.
It's a pretty good round out of the Drilling in Hunter COTW.

Ok, now serious, I know, you love big bang on end of a barrel. If you want to mess around with REAL BIG GAME CALIBER with History behind, try 9.3 caliber. Drillings are custom made, in all configuration ( I lived in Germany ). Very known " drilling " was made for German Afrika Corps Luftwaffe Pilots, which was 12 gauged shotgun and 9.3X74R rife big game cartridge. 9.3X74R is equal to 470 Nitro Express, and Germany found out, there is no Big Game where they were flying, Soon after, those Drillings were discontinued I still own my 9.3X64, made by Waffen Franconia / Wuerzburg / Germany. Based on 98 Mauser action. Best hunting rifle ever.

Nice Video! The 9,3x62 is very popular here in Germany. The stopping power is awesome on that round!
One of my favorite cartridges I have killed a lot of game with this chambering. It was in fact more popular in Africa than the .375 H&H until the mid 1950s when the .375 surpassed it. When I was a teen our gun club showed a home movie where a female hunter killed a bull elephant with a Mauser bolt gun in 9.3x62, brain shot , one round then a second insurance shot. I was impressed even at that age. Like you mentioned it's still usable in Africa in some nations by experienced hunters and of course those who live there even after the .375 caliber was mandated as the minimum for dangerous game. Looking forward to your more extensive review of this tremendous cartridge.

@SGT MAJ Trapp: I‘ am a German PH. It is my favorite Caliber. I use it on everything from small to large animals. The Meat damage isn’t bad, either. At the Moment I use Norma Vulcan 232gr. with great results. I shoot it in a Mauser MO3 Africa PH, it has a solid barrel and is quite heavy. But it helps with the recoil. Just shoot my last Wild Boar with it the day before yesterday, DRT. I started hunting with a Rifle in 8x86s which I inherited from my father. It a great caliber, too. I just find the 9,3 more pleasant to shoot. Is it true, that more and more people use the 6.5 Creedmoor on Plains Game in Africa? I would love go to Africa once. Waidmannsheil

I’ve got this calibre in a Stahl and Berger Mauser (1920-30ies). Set triggers, thumb safety in addition to the three position Mauser bolt safety. It’s a very light gun and kicks like a mule. But ‘crap’ does it smash steel plates at 100 yards. 20 rounds too early on a shoot day cripples you! Thanks for sharing, 9.3x62mm ‘yeyyyyy’!
I have a 111 Savage re-chambered to 9.3x62. Ive only taken 1 elk with it so far and it made a clean one shot complete pass throu kill on a large cow. I reload 250gr Nosler Accubond for 2550 fps, also Barnes 250gr TTSX, Barnes 286gr tsx and Speer hot-cor 270gr. No bad on the recoil and all bullets of the same weight seem to shoot to the same point of impact give ot take an inch. I was intrigued by the cartridge and caliber after extensive research and testimony, and I'm not sorry i bought this rifle Its probably the most capable and complete calibers I own.

Very nice video, Eric. 9,3x62 is not Scandinavian. It's the colonial African big game cartridge of the German Empire. Still very popular in today's Germany for driven hunts on wild hogs. That ammo has quite some price tag over here. 8x57IS is a solid alternative. Your shoulder will thank me. Cheers from Germany!
Please do all things 9.3...my favorite cartridges on the planet. We need more potato chuckers vids (9.3x57...you know you have some Husqvarnas). Otto Bock (9.3x62) was a genius. Also 286gr soft points are not nearly as destructive on whitetail as any of the magnum calibers...but they are definitely one and done. Great vid!

Something happens to the shootreaction of big moose when you step upp to 9.3. From 6.5mm to 8mm its all pretty much the same. But with the 9,3x62 even copper bullets give stoppingpower. Insane round , awesome caliber
Awesome Vid!!
In my E0 Tests, PPU was mosty on the weaker end (300 WM for ex.) I use a 9,3x64, more than 6000J E0.
If you want try glitterbomb again in the future, fill it with water. Water is non-compressible, so it will allow for a bigger glitter explosion
Beautiful show
