8 Secrets of a Healthy Mind

Sadly, in most cases, mental illness is a chronic condition: not a one-off, but something that’s likely to recur in the future. Coping requires us to accept this - and put in place a strategy for managing our symptoms over the long-term.

"We would - of course - like any encounter with mental illness to be as brief as possible and, most importantly, to be isolated and singular. But the reality is that for many of us, the illness will threaten to return for visits throughout our lives, it will be a condition to which we will be permanently susceptible. So the challenge isn’t to learn to survive only a one-off crisis; it’s to set in place a framework that can help us to manage our fragility over the long-term. Some of the following moves, practical and psychological, suggest themselves:.."

This is possibly the most understanding and unstigmatized content on the subject of long term mental health that I’ve ever come across... most videos, articles and blogs on the subject aren’t made for the people who HAVE the illness- but rather for people who know someone with a severe mental illness, to help your friends and family survive your mental illness. Content like this which is directly created for the person dealing with the illness is exactly what mental health requires. Edit: Thank you for this.

agreed, we mostly pay attention to those who are "hurting more", while thinking they're the only one that needs love and support. more often than not, they leech off of people who support them, thinking it's justifiable because they have it bad. i struggle with cutting off people like that because i don't want to be a terrible person. but i think school of life would think it's unwise to cut off relationships with a constantly self pitying person because everyone else around an immature person has to be strong and wise lol.

@@jackwarner2444 I think that's quite a cynical way to look at the world. I have many friends who are in the field and care deeply about the work. They study for years and stay current on new methods, take extensive notes for reflection, design tailored exercises to meet someone's needs, and so forth. Of course it's a job like any other, but it doesn't mean they all see it as a purely financial transaction. That said, I also agree that it's equally important to work on yourself. Those things aren't mutually exclusive. No one can solve all your problems for you. They can provide you guidance and insight, but only we can make the final lasting changes ourselves.

@@NickNotas I'm speaking from experiences of tens of thousands, possibly hundreds of thousands of people around the world who have been poisoned by people like your friends, had their lives stolen from them, decades gone, shortened life spans perhaps up to even 20 years off your life, mental acuity problems, disassociation, depersonalization, why literally the list goes on and on! But you're going to sit here and defend those pills to the last minute! Well, what you're really protecting is their income, right? And one comes out on the other side of treatment a complete chemical mess and in more trouble than they ever thought they could be possible. Before you come on here and defend your friends who are doling out drugs that are harder to get off of than heroin (did you know it's actually easier to get off heroin?), Maybe you ought to do a little research other than listening to those friends who are being paid to say those things??? And these pharmaceutical companies are lying to doctors so they have no idea what they're doing, and neither do these very well-meaning friends of yours who you're describing. At least that's what they're going to say once the patient starts assigning responsibility for what happened to the doctors who prescribed medications. Now you're threatening their practice! Even though they're completely responsible because you never had the prescription pad in your hand one minute! How do doctors know what's what when they're being fed lies by the pharmaceutical companies? And if you think that when the crap hits the fan in the middle of the night, or week, that you're going to get one of these yahoos on the phone! You're going to be shipped off to a drug treatment center and treated like a drug addict!!!! YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT. But kudos for trying to defend your friends. I hope I never meet any of them. If you think another individual or organization such as a company/doctor (ha!) has your best interest at heart... Well then why don't you swallow those pills with a big glass of water. Pills will do nothing for you but give you further complications and keep you from recovery. Now that's a fact.

This is something I'm battling in therapy.. I've been ill for so many years that the recovery has been insane. Nurturing self love seems impossible, when you learned to dismiss every feeling except anger. It's possible, though. It's not easy, but eventually you will also get better. My depression is under control (aka not having many months destroying myself up) for almost 2 years and only now I perceived some motivation to do what I can like. Sometimes my mind wants to wander aber I don't allow it. The people who had these diseases for a long time find that place comforting.. It's easy to get there, but really hard to leave. Don't give up, guys. It will be better. (I've been struggling with depression for 14 years, so it's been a real ride to know what is me and what was the depression, but I'm managing it)

Feeling miserable, suicidal, lack of self worth, etc. Because lack of education about mental illness in my place, I didn't even know at first that what I have is called depression. But it does goes better. It's not the depression itself that it's cured. It's just you're getting stronger being able to withstand it. Nowadays most feeling that I got is just feeling numb. I don't feel miserable or anxiety anymore. Suicidal thought only comes up on my worst days. I don't know if I have to live like this for the rest of my life, but I'm ready. It's constant battle and struggle yes, but I'm willing to adapt and overcome this day by day.

I’m fully aware of the absurdity of certain thoughts and perceptions during episodes of depression, but my mind still stubbornly fixate on those negative thoughts and the accompanying physiological responses make me feel like crap. I can engage in mental Jiu jitsu an come up with numerous reasons I should feel differently, but I still feel like crap. I find that I’m much more emotionally resilient whenever my diet, sleep, and physical activity are on point. Should one of those things fall by the wayside, the others come tumbling down as well and get back up become more difficult the longer I neglect myself. Nearly everything then irritates me, I become prone to attributing malice intent, and more things getting under my skin.

Diet, sleep and activity are a great help, i agree! I think when you feel terrible, and you come up with reasons for why you should feel differently, it actually might come across like you are putting yourself down for feeling a certain way. It's negative in and of itself. What helped me a lot is making the idea that "there are no wrong feelings" my own. Resentment for example is a feeling just like hunger or cold. The intensity and type of feeling you have is exactly appropriate and understandable, you just might not know why. When things are really rough, maybe it's best to just stop trying to fight thoughts, and do it when you feel better. Fighting is stressful. Relaxation should be the first goalpost. Living beings can't reason well when they are hurting.

Just know that in reading your comment I relate so much and I want to let you know that you are not alone by any means. It feels like such an isolating lonely place because everyone around us seems like their fine and we’re not - which simply isn’t true, we’re all just good at pretending. It doesn’t matter how many times you fall down the important thing is that you keep getting back up. I know how exhausting it is and it’s so important to treat yourself with enough respect and grace as possible, as you would a suffering friend. And you’re right, trying to keep the balance of sleep and rest and exercise etc is enough, without thinking you’re not good enough. You are enough as you are, just keep going and be gentle with yourself

I thought for a time I was 'healing' when in truth, it was just a memory lane I always enlivened when I thought I 'wanted' self love.. of course there would be crying. It had become a pattern for me. Sure there was empathy but I felt really weakened. I no longer voiced my opinions because I gave others perspectives air in my head as well. Thank you for this. I just got diagnosed with depression about a month ago, and learning how to deal with that new information about myself and how to relate with my illness long term was something on my mind constantly. Thanks for the impeccable timing, as always.

Believe me Clara. Take depression as any other disease. An headache, cough or a flu. If you are give pills, take them as prescribed but gradually supplement them with good diet, exercise and mediation. Depression is like any other disease but some treatments are available only in your internal cabinet.

I've been down this road, and I've turned to the solutions that you present here. These solutions are the right ones - at least I think so. And I AM proud that I have been conquering this terrible spectre in me in all its debilitating forms that have haunted me for so long. I considered myself a mentally strong person, but my mental and physical problems really took me to task. My heart goes out to those who feel they are very weak and are only at the beginning of their recovery. I hope you'll find a way. I guess all i can say is have patience with the healing of your body and mind, learn to listen to your body as well as possible, and if you find the right healing method, there WILL be a day when life is better, then another day when it's even better, and so on. Eventually you will enjoy again the things you enjoyed before like a good book, children playing in the warm sun or being with someone you care about alot and knowing that your commitment to beating this illness is making their life and your relationship to them better - maybe even wonderful - as well. I know this well as I used to do physically therapy for months without any noticeable change. Yet, I have continued to do this therapy 5 to 6 times a day. It's been 11 years now, it isn't over but it's a lot, lot, LOT better. Hope this helps someone.

I need to agree with other comments about how timely this video is. I just had a major professional setback amidst a personal, anxiety-and-depression laced crisis. I was wondering on the how was I going to pull off or rather fend off this sickness enough to not die to causes related to them. Once again, School of Life to the rescue! Thanks for being a beacon of light in the middle of this chaotic world. Thank you, thank you thank you!

The more we push something away; the less we want it to happen, the more power it has over us. A good chunk of the suffering lies in the tendency of our minds to wish the illness away

Well said; what we resist persists. Better to focus on the solutions presented, bit by bit increasing the good things leaves less time for the things that do not serve us 👍🏻

Most mental illness is an acute reaction to a toxic environment regarding a particular individual (psyche). If you leave, the mental illness does also. If you stay, it becomes chronic; and if you take medication for the symptoms, it becomes debilitating.
