8 NES Favourites Done Master System Style | hungrygoriya

Ойындар

The NES has so many memorable gaming experiences like Final Fantasy, Castlevania, Super Mario Bros., Zelda and Metroid, but the Sega Master System also has a comparable library of games that align well with these classics. Here, I discuss eight games you can feel like you're playing again for the first time, but on the Master System. 🍖
The introductory animation and outro text were created and designed by Saad Azim.

    There is so much on the system to look into, and this video really only scratches the surface! When I started looking into the library a while back, there wasn't too much out there that felt helpful, and if you ever want more suggestions for games to try, you know where to find me. I was one of the truly lucky kids (sort of) as I got both my Nes and Master System on Christmas of 1986. My parents were divorced and I had a severe medical disability that really prevented me from having a normal childhood so my one big thing was gaming. My parents were so happy that I found something I enjoyed that didn't involve hurting myself somehow. To say my house became the hangout spot is an understatement...

    I grew up loving Dragon Warrior & Final Fantasy. I really thought those series were as good as it got for 8-bit rpgs, because I had always thought the Master System was weaker hardware owing to the less polished nature of a lot of the games. Years later when I finally played Phantasy Star I, it really impressed me. I can only imagine how blown away I would have been had I seen it back in 1988 (or even earlier, with the Japanese release). It was so far ahead of its time.

    I got ahold of Gold Axe Warrior a couple of weeks back based on watching one of your earlier recommends. I can say that the comparison to the original LoZ is there for sure. It took me right back to being a 5 year old in 1985 playing Zelda with my mom, and trying to dig out every secret. Inspired by you, I even drew maps on grids and built my own Zelda-like dungeon maps. Not to gush excessively, but I lost my mother earlier this year, and it was a nice touchstone of my gaming experience to play something that reminded me so heavily of her, and some very good times. So thank you HG for your recommendation! Finally, why did you decide to name yourself Hungry Goriya, of all things? Grumble grumble.

The hungry goriya was one of those puzzles in Zelda 1 that totally stumped me as a kid. I have no recollection of how I figured it out, but I thought the goriya was grumbling because he was grumpy, not hungry. All to say, it felt fitting to adopt the moniker in honour of my childhood gaming adventures and also one of my favourite games.

    Very interesting video! In my country (Ireland) SMS was THE 8-bit console, NES was more expensive and rarer. In Eastern Europe where some of my relatives live, nobody knows what SMS is sadly. Everyone owned a Famiclone of some description or later the Mega Drive (and of course the British PCs of the time). It's always curious to see how the gaming landscape differed, depending on where you were born - though I guess PSX was the first really successful console all over the world pretty much! A point in SMS favour is also that games weren't region-locked, like with the Famicom, and there were actually very few Japanese exclusives of note by comparison, so almost every good game was readily available in English, unlike when it comes to Famicom. Also - better graphics on average. The point against it - music. I personally am not a fan of how SMS sounds, in perspective, but some good things could be done with that sound chip (Wonderboy III is a good example, or even Phantasy Star).

    It's so funny how different our experiences are growing up. I've heard such great things about the Amiga and the ZX Spectrum and those were completely off the radar here in Canada too. I do love the open region aspects of the Master System, which is why I've had such a fun time importing so many PAL-exclusives like Psychic World, or the Asterix games, or Master of Darkness. And Ultima IV... who could forget how great that one was! And I agree about the sound on the Master System... it's done so well in some games but in others... yeesh! I just ordered a copy of Bram Stoker's Dracula and the music in that is abysmal. The game looks okay at least! Anyway, thank you very much for your insightful comment. It's always nice to hear from people with different experiences in gaming.

    One comparison I wanted to see for a while, it is possible to include: Gradius (NES) x R-Type (Master System) , Kung Fu Master (NES) x Black Belt (Master System, there are four games in the Hokuto no Ken series for the Famicom and one for the NES), for Ninja Gaiden, Shadow of the Ninja and etc for the |Nes I would also mention Keisenden for the Master System, The Goonies (Nes) x SpellCaster (Master System -- a little of a stretch here) , I'd compare Metroid with Zillion for the Master System, maybe Super Mario Bros 2 and Castle of Illusion, Rolling Thunder/Code Name Viper (NES) x E-SWAt (Master), Cabal ( is there an NES version?) and Dinimate Duke, there is indeed quite a few across the borders.

    Great little video! I was wondering if you discovered 8 games like Ninja Gaiden - little known SMS versions of NES games. I did not expect this format of finding a way to frame all these more obscure games as direct answers to well-known NES titles. I like your approach a lot, even though I'm sad that there is no _legit_ SMS Mega Man game. I was kinda looking forward to discovering that, I dunno, the crazy geniuses at TecToy reprogrammed the Game Gear Mega Man to run on the Sega Master System for Brazilian gamers in 2007 or something, lol. But to see Psycho World, Lord of the Sword, Miracle Warriors and more come up here, it was certainly loaded with interesting surprises, and I respect that. Reminds me a bit of Daria's "SNES owners' guide to Genesis RPGs" video too, which is pretty awesome! Lotta Wonder Boy on this list, but what can you do? I'd expect to see Zillion compared to Metroid 1 (that first one gets too much credit when it's just not good. It's far too prototypical and nowhere near enough of the series' later trademark design has been solidified yet. Honestly, it's just a bland, floaty run n' gun through nonlinear copy-pasted corridors, and it's only got like, 4 upgrades in it. Dragon's Trap is much better). Something like Wonder Boy 3 has much more in common with _later_ Metroids, but however you get it in here, it's a quality recommendation :D Nice job!

    Yeah, unfortunately comparing SMS and NES ports of the same games has been done already, so I tried to think of a different way to connect the two systems. I was already doing these kinds of comparisons in reviews anyway, so it made sense to do more of that here. I'm sure there are lots more, but I just haven't gotten around to playing enough games yet. Some day I'll probably do a part 2, but for the moment I stuck to things I've played personally. And thanks about Wonder Boy III. I haven't played Zillion yet, but it definitely didn't feel Metroid-like from what I've seen apart from it being a big maze that you have to maneuver. That might sound a bit short-sighted and I might change my mind when I play it. Glad you appreciated some of the less-talked-about titles though... they deserve love too!

    Despite being a child of the early 80s, i never knew anyone with a Master System (later, there were a few Genesis consoles around). In general, i think it's great when someone takes a good idea from another game and makes something new from it. I'm always rolling my eyes when game reviews say "This is just a ____ rip-off game!" I remember a bunch of games on Steam that people tore apart because they were too similar (according to the reviewer) to The Binding of Isaac. But that's one of my favorite games - why wouldn't i want more of it!? That said, holy cow - Psychic World and Master of Darkness look VERY similar to their respective NES games. If someone had shown me one of the screens like at 1:45, i could probably have squinted and said it was indeed the first Zelda game. But based on my first paragraph, i'll steer clear of calling it a rip off! This is a great review of a console i barely knew existed. Thanks, great job!

    It's because I hadn't played it yet by this point, but now that I have, I really don't agree that it's much like Metroid at all. Yeah, you explore an underground maze, but other than that and the ending, it's a totally different premise, especially in terms of its weapons/armour, etc.

    @@hungrygoriya In both games you're invading an enemy base. You have an upgradable firearm, as well as an upgradeable jump. The world is non-linear, and you can backtrack to get upgrades. You come into the game on a spaceship. (Although, this isn't really shown in the original Metroid. But in future Metroid titles, you can return to the ship to get healed, just like in Zillion). And like you already said, the final boss leads into a timed escape. There's actually a lot of similarities, if you think about it more. And I honestly don't even think this is something subjective. I think that Zillion is objectively more similar to Metroid than Wonderboy 3. Also, both games have a science fiction theme. Wonderboy 3 is clearly positioned as a fantasy action RPG, as it has money to collect and items to buy, a town, locked doors that need keys, etc. Thematically, Wonderboy 3 is FAR away from both Metroid and Zillion.

  • @hungrygoriya

    @hungrygoriya

    @@hughjazz44 We'll have to agree to disagree here. Zillion's super linear and not at all an open world, but I agree that thematically Zillion and Metroid are closer. I chose WB3 because the exploration and abilities you get there are a lot more similar to the environmental interaction and "looking at things differently" that also happens in Metroid versus just gun/jump upgrades in Zillion. But I digress. A healing ship and an escape sequence as bookends are not enough to sway my opinion here.

  • @hughjazz44

    @hughjazz44

    @@hungrygoriya Zillion is "super linear" in what way? Literally the first thing you see in the base is a 3 way branching path. Unlocked rooms can open multiple exits. Some of the required floppy discs are not placed on the path to the main computer. Some floppies are placed in level 3 containers that require backtracking when you get the required level 3 Zillion. Some areas don't need to be visited at all, and some are hidden. The original Metroid upgrade system is nothing like full body transformations that change the inherent abilities of the player. Most abilities stack in Metroid, while abilities are overridden in WB3. Areas are still gated in Zillion, although only by jump height and Zillion strength. The only thing you could say that would be true is that WB3 and Metroid have MORE abilities than Zillion. Zillion is definitely a more simplistic game as far as your inventory is concerned, but that doesn't change the fact that it has more in common with Metroid than WB3. I think you're giving Metroid too much credit with the "looking at things differently" statement. The original Metroid is pretty barebones by most standards. The only thing that requires a different viewpoint is bombing random walls to find the path.
