2 RPGs in 1: The Magic of Scheherazade for NES - A Review | hungrygoriya

On the NES, nothing packs quite as much RPG variety into one experience as The Magic of Scheherazade does. Combining turn-based and action RPG battling with some neat story mechanics, it's really unlike anything else on the system. Definitely pick this one up! 🍖

Just a hint: IF the game crashes or the power goes out or something and you don't have a password in the chapter you were in, you can always go to the password screen and type W# (replace # with 2, 3, 4 or 5) to start on that world. The game will reject that password 3 times, but then it will allow you to start on that world (w4 starts on World 4, for example)

This was one of those games that I rented as a child. It made an impression on me and I had to find it and finish it as an adult.

this was one of those random games I would rent with zero expectations, and then it would end up turning into an unforgettable adventure

I saw footage of this game somewhere as a kid but couldn't remember the name, I couldn't read English. Now I finally have the opportunity to play it. One of the reasons I love channels like this.

This was a great game I remember playing it as a kid and never beating it lol.

It was the first console game I can think of with morality consequence (a little different than ultima 4). I remember a spirit only joining if you were a gentleman, and a lady would only designate you as a gentleman if you never stabbed any town's people who you could optionally attack. It would be like gannon breaking the master sword because it was weakened by chicken tears.

My second favorite hidden gem! Ive never beaten the game, but i fell in love with the music, the story and the mixed rpg aspect. To me, this game is up there with faxanadu for a must play obscure game!

Fascinating game. Seeing that it's still a fairly early Famicom/NES game, it's really forward-looking. Another thing is, Culture Brain mostly focused on Hiryuu no Ken and Super Chinese series; many games from those series didn't come out in the West... and frankly, The Magic of Scheherazade was their magnum opus in my opinion; they really got it right early on. They also had some other series, like Hamster Monogatari and Konchuu Monsters... but I can't say much about those, since I haven't really played them much at all. Still, they must have been doing something right, seeing that they're still around, as Culture Brain Excel.

I can safely say, without fear of contradiction, that this is the first time that I have heard the expression ‘wiener sword’.

Almost spit my coffee out at that "This is especially apparent when you compare it to the saint's wiener sword" line

I've heard the name of this game before and never really thought to check it out, but you've opened my eyes to what looks like an impressive RPG experience that seems a little experimental and quirky. Thanks for another great video!

This was my family's favorite game when I was in kindergarten. It was the first one I ever saw anyone beat; I was so excited when my mother finished it that I got my toy guitar and sang a song about it. Oddly, she almost never played videogames after that, and I still can't get her to pick them up again to this day. She always says she's afraid she'd sink into them and do nothing else.

If you enjoyed this you may enjoy Little Ninja Brothers. It's the same company folding genres on each other. In Little Ninja Brothers (a spiritual sequel to Kung Fu Heroes) you traverse a traditional rpg map but encounters are a mini stage setup like Kung Fu Heroes...but wait...there's more! There's also sporting events, puzzles, and 4th wall breaking humor!

I am so happy you got to this gem. I played a lot of this as a kid and then as a young adult, and I loved it. It's such a unique and wonderful game, despite it's flaws.

Magic of Scheherazade is one of my all-time favorite NES games and I'm so stoked to see you give your thoughts on it. Seriously, I would love to see someone make a reboot of this lost gem.
