The Casual GnG Game: Ghouls 'n Ghosts for Sega Master System | hungrygoriya

Ойындар

I'm finally part of a club for people who have beaten a GnG game after completing Ghouls 'n Ghosts for the Sega Master System. Although it's not as polished as some of its other releases for arcade, Sega Genesis and the Supergrafx, it brings a lot of new mechanics to the table to make the game a lot more approachable for a casual gamer. 🍖

I think a lot of people missed this one completely, don't feel bad! If it makes you feel any better, I had no idea that a lot of those systems really existed until I was much older. Aaah Ghouls n' Ghosts, one of my all time favorite games. I never had the opportunity to play the Master System version. As a matter of fact I have never seen a copy in the wild and for the longest time I thought the Genesis/Super Grafx were the only consoles from the era that got it. Ghouls n' Ghosts became the biggest deciding factor for me when I made the faithful choice to go with the Genesis in 1989. I was so close to getting a TG-16 for Legendary Axe...that was until I saw a friend playing his new Genesis with Ghouls n' Ghosts. The graphics, sound, and tight gameplay was absolutely intoxicating. In 1989...there was nothing like it out. Addendum- I have beaten Ghouls n' Ghosts for the Genesis, Super Grafx, arcade, and Super Ghouls n' Ghosts for the Snes. The Nes port of Ghosts n' Gobblins was the one that broke me...I really hated that game. I'm going to have to track down a copy of GnG for the Master System as it looks really neat. I want a shop and new armor in the Genesis port damnit! Come on indy devs let's get it done! :)

I hope you have the opportunity to try this version. It sounds like you're a mega fan based on how many titles you've managed to put to bed from this series over the years. Have you tried Resurrection? I've watched a few people play it on the hardest mode and it looks absolutely brutal. Since this video, the only other GnG I've managed to finish is the NES port, and good lord... it's one of the hardest games I've beaten. There's something about that whole experience that feels tough to me. I'm not sure if it's the character movement or what, but it took me a very long time to finally get through it. I'm glad I'm not the only one who finds that game punishing!

One of my all-time favorites, right up there with Nintendo's Castlevania. Anytime I hear of ghouls and ghost it takes me right back to playing on the Master System with my older brother, we almost made it to the halfway point, at that time we thought it was the end of the game.. I can thoroughly enjoy the game now that I have beat it a couple times. Running level 3-2 with the stock boots was a big challenge for me. When I got to 3-2 with max boots but no armor upgrades it was like he was on ice and I had to relearn the timing for all the jumps. A lot of possibilities to tweak the difficulty to your own desire. The second loop with stuff maxed out is so much easier.

Doubly so, as I'd have expected the expanded mechanics which this introduced to be more fitting to an NES port, over a Master System one. Punished is a great descriptor for what I think many of us have faced at the hands of the other games! I haven't played the C64 version at all, but from what I read online, the port wasn't the greatest because of the controls! The expanded mechanics in the Master System version really go a long way in giving you a leg up here... if you spam the shield spell over and over, you can more or less beat the game without too much trouble, but there's not much fun in that. It's great to have a fallback in especially hairy situations though! I hope you give it a try!

Great review. I just did the G&G remaster on Switch a couple months ago and I was kinda disappointed it wasnt more like this one, with permanent upgrades and such. Sure, there was magic but overall you were left with very little other than your own reflexes to clear the game. The game was all around pretty to look at, but it was truly a pain to finish and I dont think I will ever go back to it. But this one, I dont mind playing it once in a while, mainly thanks to the power ups. Since you seem to like sidescrolling action rpgs, I was wondering if you ever tried Xardion on snes. Its a little gem with a futuristic setting, nice mechanics and a great story. A little heavy on the lvl grinding, but I dont think that would be a problem to you héhé

You'd think that permanent upgrades would be a staple in newer games, but I suppose they wanted to do a callback to all the other mean games in this series... I don't have the skill to make it through that sort of thing! Xardion eh? I haven't heard of it before, but I will have a look into it. I was at normal difficulty and it almost cost me a new controller just to get through lol No, seriously, that was hard as **** to beat. Only graphics and boss designs made me finish it. Otherwise, it was way too "cheap difficult" for me to be enjoyable. As for Xardion, its one of those games that dont look like much at first, but then we play it to realise its far from being awful, kind of like Lagoon or Arcana or 7th Saga. At first, it seems to be a action/shooter game, but trust me, its a good old rpg with lvl up, sidequests and everything. I believe you would like it. Besides, its not that expensive compared to other titles. On that note, Im actually playing Paladin Quest for the first time, and that one too is much better than I tought it would be.

We had this TV show over here that was pretty much the only place where you could see actual gameplay from games and hear reviews and that show completely dominated which games would get the spotlight. Even if the reviews weren't particularly favorable, it was something tangible xD But they really gave each system back them about the same attention so kids would at least be aware of both systems. Maybe its because I guess the only memories I have of them is ragequitting, or watching my best friend growing up spike his controller and yell so theres no real nostalgia there (beyond laughing at watching other people ragequit -its one of those "way more fun to watch than play" games) Theres difficult games and then theres "Im only playing this for bragging rights, and i also eat ghost chile peppers" hard, which IMHO G&G games fall into. Arcade games were designed to eat quarters, but many devs didnt realize that for many players crushing difficulty wasnt welcome on consoles. I did however like the Gargoyles Quest game on SNES, it seems to be more in the master system vein, hard but not stupid hard. I need to check this one out.
