    quite a brutal review there Arthur! I can see why given the build and cost of the lens and totally agree. That bokeh almost looks like the sensor in the middle with the bokeh around it! .. On a side note.. are you ready for feb 9th ? Sigma announcing new 20mm f2.0 DG DN for full frame e mount?

    It would be nice to see images from different apertures during night time and day time. I have the TTArtisan 25mm F2, and it's pretty amazing at 5.6 with some good 3D pop to subjects. At F2 it's soft, but great for midnight shooting where sharpness is generally removed from the equation because you're working with more lighting and contrast in your images.

    This lens is not nearly as bad as reviewed here. I have had the opportunity to checkout 2 samples and one was definitely much worse than the other but none nearly as bad as the one as reviewed here. Sample variation is a big problem with these Chinese brands.. tolerances are high and quality control minimum. This is how mass produced hardware is done for the cheapest price possible. Best way to buy these lenses is to wait till they are available in the secondhand market and then test them before you buy, something you can't do when you buy a brand new one in a box. Buying secondhand allows you to compare several and choose the best, by far the safest and cheapest proposition. The (better) sample Ive had in my hands for a while performed actually very very well wide opened except when targeting very high contrast subjects were ghosting and some haziness was obvious. But aside from those extreme conditions Ive managed to get awesome high quality shots from the lens. Manual focusing with it wide open IS A REAL CHALLENGE but that comes with the territory. Everyone's mileage will vary and it's kind of a russian roulette game because you will either get lucky or you won't. But this lens, a good sample, is (can be) actually a good performer within it's limitations.

    Will you do a review of the TTArtisan 23mm f/1.4? (I have been using it exclusively for astrophotography, and stars are unforgiving targets that show every aberration, especially in the corners.) It would be interesting to get a comparison between the TTArtisan 23mm f/1.4 and this 7artisans 25mm F0.95.

    Damn it Alan, get your price :D With so many manual F0.95 now this really didnt do the trick, we already got a good amount of focal lengths now but 25mm at 0.95 is pretty impressive to be fair. Lets see how this trend evolves. Think with better lens elements, it wouldve done much better, wouldve been more expensive then though.

    The body of the lens is the first I have seen, for a manual lens, that doesn't just make it look outdated. It would be nice to see how these wide aperture lenses fare on a full frame. It looks like your sensor is dirty, or is it damaged?

    the 35/0.95 was such a strong performer for the price that i had high hopes for the 50/0.95 and 25/0.95. unfortunately, as you mention in the video, neither of them live up to the standard set by their predecessor. 7artisans wants this trio to be their "firefly series" but i can't see any reason for getting the 50 or the 25 unless they improve their optical performance.

    I am buffled many times about how reviewers look at f0.95 lenses.When anyone compares this one lens to lenses of f1.2 or lower,it means that already the lens is not fully utilised in my opinion at least. I feel like shooting during daylight with this lens (even if cloudy),feels like you are putting a frog to fly a race against a parrot.Now to be fair you do make some fair points on this video compared to some I've seen,like the fact that the bokeh lights have this rectangular shine in them. Overall this lens is made (just like every other firefly lens) for low light conditions mostly,meaning that the glass was mostly made for candle-equivilen light, where 0.95 is simply the only option you get and pixel peeping doesn't make any sense.The lens indeed has the worst subject isolation of any other firefly lens and thus it does make the lens feel even softer. Now let me explain to you why the price is so high and why the lens is so heavy and bulky.This lens tried to short things out with the Cromatic Aberration in a budget,so instead of going the APO route that would increase the cost to probably 450$+ they went with a triple hoya filter glass inside the lens that tries to line the colours removing fringing and a portion of chromatic aberration.In low light this lens is comparable to the Laowa Argus 0.95, I definitely would say it does better but it is relatively close to the Argus' performance.Overall when it comes to CA this one does better than every firefly lens. I haven't done enough tests yet with this lens but so far it seems to be decent for what it is supposed to do,offer light when light is non-existent, it is relatively sharp compared to the zeiss 0.7 lens so for videographers that's a fair comparison you can get for the lens. In terms of character it is rich,but lens' character most of the times comes down to personal prefference.Overall this lens is worth the money if you are going to use it for what it is supposed to do,if you want to get a 1.2 lens,the get a 1.2 lens this is not a 1.2 lens in desguise that's for sure.

    Canon EF 50mm F1.0L lens has simillar issue. It caused by sensor cover plastics which interferes bokeh. Old EOS cameras have rounded sensor cover to prevent this but they removed it in 5D Mark 3 or later cameras so it has same issue too.

  • @stephensoraci9794
    @stephensoraci97942 жыл бұрын

    Arthur. I beleive the small black edges on your bokeh balls on this lens are due to too much light coming into the lens directly into a crop sensor. This would explain the lighter rectangular spot. I had a similar affect on my micro 4/3 with the 50 0.95. Try the full frame in a similar portrait and see if results are the same.

    So the f0.95 (which Canon did first some 60 years ago) gives no advantage and the resolution quality is worse than what you can get from any used M42 mount lens for a tiny fraction of the price. It makes me wonder if companies ever bother to test their products before releasing them.

    I am mainly photographing on film and therefore, I find this pixel peeping from digital photographers always a little bit over the top. The portraits, you shot from this blonde lady in your video are sharp enough in my opinion. Is this super sharpness on photos of skin really wanted ? And later, photographers start to retouch and apply filters to get the skin smoother. 😂😂😂

    I think the question to ask here is: has this *ever* been done? how did they manage to do this? the optics aren't refined? well, this may be the world's first try at a .95 lens this wide. 1.4 and 1.8 as the competitors... that's what you cite? has anybody, *anybody*, even Carl Zeiss himself made a .95 wide angle lens before on the planet earth with the atoms and techniques we puny humans have? For me, an optical stop of light is fundamentally different than an ISO stop. That's not to say I don't love shooting at 12600 ISO and higher...but then I get to *combine* that with an extra stop of light from the lens, which has all manner of color and dynamic information coming along with it. Glass samples the waveforms and captures information in synergy with the sensor...don't it? as for "Reproductions" I don't know if there is a religious reason this is important to you, in which case, *respect*. I will leave it right there and nod to your beliefs, I think the world is a richer and more beautiful place because there's a diversity of beliefs in it. At a very self-interested level, there's more scintillating street photographs to be captured of human society doing its daily routines...because we inhabit diverse cities where different faiths abide together. A TLDR of the above would be: "If this a religion thing, we coo' " Reproduction is nice, it is a consensus in photography, but outside the consensus among the minorities, but it's not merely a lunatic fringe that is okay with letting go of reproduction as a top priority and letting it slip to priority number 2 or even 3 or 5. After all, there are great photographers out there in the hipster world of *film* street photography that are clearly forsaking a lot of *reproduction quality* to achieve other artistic or documentary aims. I look at this lens and contemplate how it would render moonlight landscapes and ceremonies (weddings by campfirelight, the photographer invisible in a blackout suit but always close by) The filmmaking potential to have camera operators *in frame* in the shadowed areas of a night scene opens up *huge* opportunities for budget filmmaking or even solo youtube stuff (wildlife, marbles, "aesthetic videography* type stuff...) needless to say I am intrigued by this lens. I which I could have seen some video samples in darkened lighting conditions (a caving trip mayhaps, or even just a walk into the basement)
