Laowa Argus 18mm f0.95 APO, the BEST from Laowa and the BEST in 2022? RED35 Review

Rarely I describe a lens as BEST in class, and even rarer when I had to part my own money to get such a lens. Laowa may have just produced an instant classic for any photographers (and videographers). To me this may just make the BEST lens in 2022, yes, watch and find out why I love Laowa's latest Argus 18mm f0.95 APO.

You are also costing me a lot of money, as I seem to go ahead and buy lenses you show in your videos 🤗🤩📷. Have not regretted a single purchase, though 🥳 Please keep up the great work! l love my 17/1.2. Since I am retired mostly, I take photos for myself. You mentioned having the 17/1.2 Would this be a good complement for that lens to give a different look for wide angle photos used to make prints? Which is 90% of what I do now.

    A few words about comparison to the Mitakon 17mm f 0.95 which you reviewed 2 years ago, would have been interesting. That one is bit soft wide open,but really good otherwise. I believe the flare is less pronounced, but haven’t used it much outdoors. I am disappointed that Laowa does not incorporate EXIF data in their Argus line. I have that in my 10mm f 2.0 and it really helps with handling and auto correction.

My complement of lenses mostly for video production include Laowa 7.5mm, Olympus 17mm, Olympus 12-40mm and Panasonic 42.5mm. Hi, I was thinking on investing to start doing some photo sessions in between jobs, and would like to get a 17mm-ish lens, but since I saw this one that I'm on doubt if I should invest on the Olympus 17mm f1.2 or if this one would suffice (for taking photos to children without AF may be a challenge though). What about the Panasonic 15mm 1.7? This would be already too wide, right? Thanks

  • @Red35Photography

    @Red35Photography

    Oh photographing children is always challenging. AF is probably a better route. This manual lens is great but perhaps better suited for more 'controlled' subjects. ahaha I think If you are already thinking 17mm 1.2, then that's probably the best AF lens in that range right now and there's no comparison.

    The vignetting is very noticeable in most of your sample shots here. Some are even annoying unless you happen to like potholing look with light visibly fading not just at the edges but almost half the distance into the center from the sides. As there is no clear sample here but how is its resistance to comatic flare at the widest aperture? Does it need to be stopped way down?

    I really dont understand these lenses. I own both mft and FF systems, and the advantages of mft will always be size. Just for the sake of comparison, this lens weights 500g !!!, doesnt have autofocus, oly 17 f1.2 weights 390g and my sony FE 35mm 1.8 weights 280g... And... for the people that say, well the cameras are smaller... Om1 weights 600g, and my sony a7c weights 509g... So i get FF sensor plus more bokeh plus lower weight!!! than mft. Thats why i really like the small zooms (leica 12-60) (lumix 12-32), and tiny primes like the leica 15mm f 1.7 and oly 45mm f 1.8. This is where mft shines!

  • @Red35Photography

    @Red35Photography

    These lenses are all about optics, you won't find 0.95 lenses for this price/performance. It isn't just about DoF/Bokeh or AF speed, there are a ton of people don't need AF but speed, in terms of light gathering and overall optics performance. I've used this lens in almost complete darkness and managed to handheld a shot and used only ISO 800, you can do that in FF with similarly priced lens but they will be slower and you will need to push the ISO well beyond 6400 to get the same shot, if you are lucky. This is why.

  • @sbgaming4794

    @sbgaming4794

    @@Red35Photography thats exactly the point, low light is a weakness of mft, a different size sensor would be better for this kind of work. There is literally a FF laowa 35mm f 0.95... its Just... fullframe and it costs 649$... Look i understand options are nice, but the truth is for low light a bigger sensor is better and there are also cheap and lightweight options to do the same job.

    @@sbgaming4794 Not everyone can afford or wants to have another/additional camera system. Your a7c is 3 times more expensive than let's say Panasonic GX9. M43 system is very versatile, you can go super light and small but you can go bigger for specific needs (bright aperture etc.) that also is an advantage. It will always be more beneficial to buy one more lens for one's existing system (even if it is not the best in terms of price/performance to other system's lenses) than buying another camera system (new body).
