#79 GPRS/GSM and GPS in one cheap module: The A7 from AI-Thinker

Ғылым және технология

In this video, I do a first test with this brand new module. It is well suited to build GPS trackers for logistics applications. Together with an ESP8266, an ESP8285, or an Arduino Pro Mini you can build such a tracker for less than 15 dollars.
There is also a small introduction into antennas.

Haven't looked through the whole video, but I just felt I had to comment! You make it so interesting! Some things that you talk about I already know, more or less, but you teach me a lot also with your videos! Really awesome video, as your other videos, I really love them! =D Too bad they didn't supply a proper gps antenna, but what could you expect? =/ Always with 433MHz and other modules bought on eBay and AliExpress you always get the wrong antennas. Really sad, but I guess we've got used to it ;) hehe.. At least we can order a specific antenna and for us others who don't have a spectrum scope, we can only hope that they are proper ;) haha.. Thanks for creating this content!

Hi Andreas, not sure if you found it, but the GPS data can be streamed through the same serial connection that you issue commands with. I.e. only need a single serial connection. Use: AT+GPSRD = 1 //serial gps output on or AT+GPSRD = 0 //serial gps output off

Great videos, Andreas. Saved me a lot of time and compensates greatly for the poor chinese documentation. When it comes to hardware i/o characteristics and max ratings, you're on your own. I managed to connect to the board with a 3.3V USB cable. It survived though the serial i/o rating is 2.8V and with your videos it worked like a charm. I trashed the included WiFi antenna and connected an active GPS antenna instead and powered it with a mockup of 5V, a simple coil and capacitor. The GPS-RF input also survived this. Great performance with AT+GPS and AT+GPSRD. Can't get the AT+AGPS to work though even if the GSM is connected. Have you tried AGPS succesfully? Anyone?

Im looking for GPS tracker for my stratospheric baloon, and I need it to have disabled 60000 ft/18 km height limit, or just that one, which uses AND function (GPS turns off when both altitude and speed are exceeded).

These are only modules to read the position. So, you need an additional microprocessor to log the data. And this microprocessor then has to do the switching.

At the time i write this, the A7 module is on ebay, but they don't advertise the GPS features at all. To find it you'll have to search for: *GPRS A7*. If you have GPS in your search it won't show up. So it all must be quite new, and they're still using the description from the A6 (with no GPS). On the items tho you can clearly see it's the A7 module in the pics tho, with the dual Antennas and "GPRS+GPS" written on the module surface.

I managed to add power for a active GPS antenna to the GPS SMA connector. I replaced the zero ohm resistor which connect the SMA connector to the GPS antenna input from the A7 module by a 100 pf capacitor. On the backside of the pcb I soldered a SMD 1 uH inductor directly to the center point of the SMA connector and the other end with a thin wire to the 4 volt VCC near the MP1584 voltage regulator.

I can't say much about the components, because they came out my "junk box". The capacitor is a 3216 (3.2 x 1.6 mm) but the 0 ohm resistor it replaces was smaller in size. I don't think that the quality is very important, because it only has to block the VCC. The inductor is a 3225 (3.2 x 2.5 mm) with a dc resistance of 0.5 ohm. It is mounted upside down, so it is easyer to solder to the center pin of the SMA connector and to solder the wire at the other end.

I get the same data as before but the location is different and away from me about 43km !! My program is the easiest of the possibilities, it reads the gps data and displays it in the Serial minitor. Andreas, I got my A7 today but I can't seem to get serial communication to work. The only info I have is from your video. I am supplying power to the micro USB connector from a large power bank, so I assume current capacity is OK. I have serial connected to PC via a CH340 usb adapter (RX/TX pins on the same side as GPS connector). I have a ground from the CH340 to the A7, but not power. The CH340 is set to 5v just to be safe. I then press and hold the power button on A7 for 2 seconds and the LED lights up. Putty is connected at 115200 baud. When I type AT i get nothing on the putty terminal. If I press the power button again, to power down, then power up, I get some 'garbage' on the serial terminal, so assume something is happening?? Do I need any special settings in putty? have I got the A7 powered up correctly?

  • @markdavison7893

    @markdavison7893

arrrh! some progress, I now get an output when i power it on. Not sure what was wrong before, possibly not holding power button down for long enough. The A7 now send a series of lines to putty; ^CINIT: 1, 0, 0 ^CINIT: 2, 32, 41891 ^CINIT: 8, 2048, 1 ^CINIT: 16, 0, 1638410 ^CINIT: 32, 0, 0 +CREG: 0 then nothing else happens. I still can't send AT, or at least I get no response. I've tried sending AT+GPS=1 and again now OK response (assuming I should get an OK). I have to force ECHO on to see the AT that I send, nothing when set to auto (not sure how this should be set)

I can now get AT comunication working and send/receive text messages ! The problem was the power supply, it obviously wasn't coping with the peak requirement. Had similar issues with SIM800 so should have known. I'm now struggling with GPS. I get an OK response to the AT+GPS=1 command, but no output on the GPS TX @ 9600. Should I get a serial output even without a fix? I only have the wifi type antenna that can with the A module and an Active antenna (with a very long lead). I've tried both but no output on the serial terminal

Hello, do you have a schema on how to connect the wires for GPS / GPRS?

Not more than at 5:33. Maybe you have a look into the data sheet of the A6/A7

That's exactly what I did UART_TX -> RX and UART_RX -> TX both 3.3v, 5v -> 5v and the GND to GND, I don't need the GPS because I'm only trying to use the GPRS/GSM for now. But it seems the A7 doesn't even power up, I'm trying to connect it with a raspberry pi. I will maybe try and see if this works with a PC + FTDI first. I could see that you have a red light on on yours which I dont have switched on mine at all, are there any specific ways to turn it on?

@Andreas Spiess Based on the schematics of the A6, I figured I had to connect an micro usb cable to the A7. then loop the 5v with the PWR_KEY, it works now. Thanks.

Not that I remember. But it needs some power. So, you might have a look at your 5V supply that it is strong enough

Can you show more detail about the schematic in your test? Thankyou.

I did not do that. But you find some information in the comments. Maybe in the future, I will du an update to that video.

maybe your supply is to weak (thin cables, weak battery,...)

Hi Fritz, using a solid ATX power supply enough Amps, not sure about the cables, what would you suggest? When I do it manually via putty it works, but from arduino with code it reboots??

ATX power supply sounds totally fine. I looked the cables up awg18 or better should do the job (rated for 2A continuous) do you use level shifters? since what i remeber uart is 2.8 (i found no docs telling me the max or HIGH/LOW logic levels)
