75 Year Old Milk Scale Restoration
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Vintage Purina Milk Scale from the 1940s restored.
This is a Milk Scale made by Purina in the 1940s for dairy farmers. Dairy farmers would regularly weigh the milk for each cow, as well as measure the cream content, and track the data in order to cull cows that were not producing enough. It is a spring scale and fairly accurate for the weight range 0-60 lbs it is designed for.
The restoration:
Rust: Everything on this scale was rusty as you can see in the video. Luckily these scale were made from very good quality steel so everything cleaned up nicely. I used aluminum oxide blasting media to blast most of the rust off.
Paint: This scale has 5 kinds/colors of paint. Grey interior, hammered exterior, white front, blue dial and red for the artwork/ second hand. I tried to match the color as best as I could. The red is a dead-on match to Purina's red (as listed in their design guidance on their website).

What all do you use to recreate those labels. I’ve been looking into doing the same thing for a small tractor I have (can’t find the stickers for it anywhere) and was wondering what all went into doing it.

I'm pretty sure that the intended use for the hands isn't adding weights but zeroing the scale after weighing the empty jar.

@@PabloSanchez-qu6ib Not based on my research. I doubt dairy farmers every zeroed the scale. All milk jugs are going to weight the same, within the accuracy of this scale. If you need to zero, you don't fix the first hand, you just make it adjustable. Thanks for watching!

What is the Reson for using lead test
@avenger007007

@@electroidin3413 Lead is harmful to your health, so making it airborne in the blast chamber would be a bad thing. If lead is present he has to use a chemical based stripper.
Brings back memories for me. I'm too young (68 YO), but I remember one hanging in the barn that my brother and I played with. Thank you very much.

that comment made my day sir, god bless you
My cat saw Purina and watched it with me. I'm always amazed when original printing and labels can be restored just from a jpg image in the internet. Turned out awesome and what a great collectible to put next to old milk containers!
My Dad worked part time as a Purina agent back in the late 40's to mid 50's. Those scales were promotional give away items to farmers that bought Purina feed and the feeding program. I remember him having a box full of those in our garage.

Nice restoration. I don't remember ever seeing one on the farm in the late '60s. My grandparents had moved from just having dairy cows by that time though too, focused more sheep and beef, and only milked enough for the family and neighbours. I still miss raw milk to this day. Interesting bit of gear. Thanks for the video.
Man, those stencils worked out GREAT!!! Awesomeness as always!
Perfect! I love when the graphics are painted back on❤️ nothing more disappointing than a sticker where paint belongs.

Впервые вижу мастера у которого инструменты в порядке, а не требуют рестоврации! Не скрывает чем пользуется и как! Вот такое можно смотреть! Сделано всё акуратно, красиво... Успехов вам! С меня 👍👍👍
Whenever I watch one of these I immediately think how is he going to do that? The sanding the removal of rust and the painting the average Joe can do but it takes a tool shop with a sandblaster and welding equipment to do a better job. The stencilling was the key and I was impressed. But the most important part of this whole job was the skilled craftsmen and knowing how something works….. hats off to you job well done. Do you ever wonder when you take things apart that some of these mechanical gizmos are very complicated and how they made the first prototype with trial and error. After which they have to knock out each piece and figure out how to fabricate it on an industrial scale?
Extraordinarily very detailed in restoring weighing equipment, satisfying final results, always enthusiastic and healthy 🙏
Very, very nice job. I'm in the process of restoring a 1944 "Wood" U.S. shovel.
Fantastic👍
Great job! Happy to see folk who find beauty and expression in bringing back to life some lost or forgotten items. Curious as to what you do with all the items you restore!
Amazing finish, another piece of history saved... 👍👍

That scale has clearly weighed a lot of milk in its time.

Lol, at this point every time you say something is missing something, I immediately know that your next comment is “I’ll have to fabricate new ones!” 😂 Fantastic job!!!

@@AcmeRestorations Don’t don’t know if you’re going to keep that scale or not but was wondering what do you think it would sell for if you were selling it?
This restoration episode has revamped my memory of when I've seen; the most dumb ridiculous got milk TV commercial, my pop/father George D. Shelton once said that. Here's what he really said; "why don't you go to the store, and buy some milk."
Fantastic job, I am amazed at the results.
Beautiful results well done

Great video, but just one small thing -one of the most satisfying things is watching the sandblaster like the channel Rescue and Restore has, and I wonder is it possible to get your footage to look like his?
