My great grandfather was the Lockhouse keeper at Kibworth Locks, just down the canal a bit, and he also helped build the incline plain, there's even a book with his photo on the front! Good to meet you there, shame it wasn't a bit more exciting.

LOVE IT! we have a whole town in the Adelaide Hills, South Australia where the houses decorates and lights up for Christmas, its become a tradition now its lovely for children and they collect for charity.. Thats a bit sad.. lets hope it gets better

Thanks for a year of entertaining and informative vlogs. As someone that is investigating narrow boats and canals as a retirement project in a few years, your videos have answered several issues and raised new points. My background is Marine electronics & electrical/engineering, but other areas need reading up on. I look forward to new videos in 2017.

Again, thank you for the great coverage with great effort to create a Christmas spirit in the vlog. I gave a thumbs up for the video but as you did mention that it's an inaugural event, there's much to be learned I can imagine as far as CRT is concerned. Nobody does it a 100% the first time, so give them a year or two. They probably weren't expecting that many visitors the first time, hence the full carpark. The 'flatness' of the event, oh well, it was cold and dark .. not really your cup of tea now ain't it.

It was only the first time they'd run it at this venue, not the first time it had ever been run so I think it's fair to have expected better.

The scenery looks beautiful ! Must have been a spectacular view with the elevators working in the past.

Hee, I remember stopping off here on a multi-day cycle ride from London to Matlock (Derbys.) - you really appreciate why it needs all those locks if you have a heavy lunch at the Inn and then cycle back up to the main road.

Very good package. Well done!

Weirdly, the fog was kind of rainy; my camcorder got soaked. But yes, not actual rain ;-) Happy Christmas to you.

Great video, thanks to the 2 boats that participated, lets hope for more next year. I am guessing the Gongoozlers mainly paid money and froze, but not unlike many a firework night back in blighty. I am assuming the usual culprits made all the money off the hard work of other, the carparks and pub (for warm food and antifreeze!). Really hope some lessons learnt to make next years splendid!

Well this film was really well put together, with the video of the board at night, and on one of the boats, the interview with the arranger cut in appropriately, the sequence of the tree being lit, all along a foggy canal in the dark... no street lights here. I'll look for others. We had a flotilla of boats with lights decorations and music for an August holiday along our canal... no pyro, but lots to see and free just for the looking

I was surprised that this event took place at Foxton owing to the restriction in the physical arrangement at this junction on the canal, not to mention the car parking which is always a problem. Having said that it is always good to have these events at different sites around the system. I feel that perhaps rather than one event, several should take place at the same time to give more people the opportunity to attend such gatherings rather than all descending to one location. In turn the CRT could make a little more profit from several events rather than just one. Anyhow thank you Dave for your excellent freezing report and l would like to wish you seasons greetings and look forward to more. "Cruising the cut" episode's in the New Year. 🍺🍷🍷 Cheers!

David again full marks for your honesty, as much as the event had enormous potential it was very poorly organised. When people travel on cold and foggy nights to see an event it is extremely disappointing when it is such a let down, I saw that tree and was thinking it is about to start and that was it. I am sitting in a warm room and I was disappointed words could not describe how you all felt. I hope the CRT did learn by this ?🥶🥶🥶🥶🥶🥶🥶🥶🥶

Not sure it does have a lot of potential, to be honest. Crowds of people by the canal in the dark and cold is already a dodgy start from a safety point of view. Most boaters moor up for the winter, so few boats will travel to the event unless they're already very close. Most boaters don't want to move at night. Most people aren't extroverted enough to cover their homes in Christmas lights and show them off at an event.

I've watched most of your vlogs this year apart from the odd toilet one. Very interesting and informative with a sprinkle of humor. Merry Christmas and keep up the good work.

Thank you so much for freezing your extremeties and other parts to bring us this vlog. The flaming tree was impressive as we're all the decorated boats. Very festive! I don't know the logistics but it would be splendid if they could line up a lighted boat parade to go all the five miles down the canal to the next turn around. wouldn't it be a vision!? A bit on the tricky side to pilot in the dark. I hope the canal trust received a lion's share of the parking fee. Joyous Noel to you.

I think the CRT took all the parking money. Apparently they'd first planned to have lit boats going down the locks but decided it was too dangerous in the dark :-(

Lighted boats down the locks in the dark does sound dangerous and a bit slow. Kind of like watching paint dry. Fireworks bring another set of problems like not catching the trees and surrounding countryside or people on fire during ignition. Still, Christmas Holiday festivals with lights and vendors of local artisans, crafts, foods and Santa always draw big crowds and pull in revenue for many nonprofits here. As long as you bundle up and have warming stations they are quite fun. This one may develop as well. Our smaller rivers are usually frozen at this time so all the houses along them decorate with lights and we take the family in the car to view all the show of lights. Some are even synchronized with music. I may be simple but I find it impressive and it never fails to put a smile on EVERYONE. Happy Christmas.

We have a similar event in Texas on the 4th of July. I know you Brit's do not celebrate the 4th. But on a Lake Cherokee near our house, boats decorated with lights parade in file past and island as many people watch. Then they set anchor and watch the fireworks display. It is above all things noisy. Beautiful colors in the sky for over a half hour. All the while music plays in the background. When the finally comes, Lee Greenwood's " God Bless the U.S.A." plays with a final burst of color and the fireworks flag is set ablaze. This was started by one man years ago. Now the people who live around the lake put the show on. It is viewed by thousands from the bank of the lake.

The days are already short, nice to see a little extra light out there. Foxton locks looks like neat little place to visit. When they get the incline lift working again, I wonder how that will affect the area. I caught the wiki about it. Hopefully, it won't be a struggle running it like it had been in the past. Cheers!

It's a Gongoozler hotspot for sure. Not sure they will get the incline running but preservation etc for sure.

Every tradition begins somewhere, and, just perhaps, this will become a smash hit in future years. It sounds like a nice idea, save for the slight chill in the air.

Does anyone know the name of the style of fire decoration that the tree was made of? I used to work making lancework for a fireworks company in the US, I haven't seen this kind.

the advent of LED's has transformed decorative lights...cheaper to run and no dead bulbs to change....

Yes, I can relate. Actually just last night I made a commitment to my granddaughter but found my self adding in at the end of the sentence "unless I win the lottery". (Guess than I just take her and her entire family with us). Actually, right now I would be happy selling my small business for what it was worth 10-20 years ago......... :(

Imagine the scene, your life is a repeat of the day before you have little or no r&r time and certainly living in suburbia leaves you concrete and cold, the final straw, your neighbors decorate their houses for every holiday they can think of, if it blinks and winks and is custom made from China it gets put on the roof or in the garden......you snap, you take the chance of swapping your life for one of narrow boat folk............................then the Foxton Festival sizzles up near your mooring with plans to hold many more "festivals of light:!!!!!!! , you wake up , it was a just a bad dream......or was it!!!!!
