CruisingTheCut

Cruising The Cut is about the historic canals of Britain. I (David Johns) quit my job in 2015, sold my house and went to live on a narrowboat. Initially videos of my travels, I now document various aspects of canal life.

I bought a widebeam canal boat 3 years ago and it’s the best thing I’ve ever done. I would honestly die rather than live in a house again. I bought a run down boat with the intention of refurbishing it all throughout the inside and eventually outside once I’ve completed the inside. I would advise anyone to get a boat if they are in a position to buy one. I have no council tax, no electric ,gas or water bills, no tv license…. The only monthly bills I have is my mobile phone, boat insurance, boat license, van insurance and stuff like food and fuel. NO COUNCIL TAX….think about that..

That’s a whole lot of real estate and tranquil beauty for a million pounds. When the video first started playing, I had an idea that it was probably double that figure. It’s an incredible property at that price and no doubt someone will come along pretending to be passionate about the history and tranquility, only to turn it into an unloved, unappreciated asset just for bragging rights. I hope this doesn’t happen though. Now: where’s that lottery ticket I bought! Great, heart warming video. Thank you for sharing and giving us this lovely insight on how attractive the canals are if you look just under the surface and beyond the normal canal-life videos.

Superb video .Bluewater do build some amazing boats. How about a video of a tour round one of the 100year old plus original Dutch barges, there seem to be a number about especially on the Gloucester and Sharpness. That would be fascinating.

What a remarkably well-done video, I have a better appreciation for the role played by canals in the early part of the Industrial Revolution. Many of the canals in the USA were finished well into the 19th century, eg the Erie canal in 1825 so only had 20 or so years before being overtaken by railroads so seemed to be of lesser consequence, this gives a broader historical view for our canals. Also interesting where wrought iron provides (unintentionally, as you point out) a better solution than lighter, strong steel. Lot of other fast paced interesting information, thanks.

You may wish to look at a tool called a Surfprep sander, but you would also need a large ish battery and solar panel or power point. The surfprep has a foam pad sandpaper interface that works on curves. It also has a vacuum that turns on and off when you turn on the sander. Sadly, it is not cheap. But, it is a lovely, lovely useful power tool, beloved by woodworkers everywhere

Takes me back to the 1980's. Some family friends owned a blue and white version of Toad Hall. Funnily enough, the boat was also called Toad Hall! I wonder if it's the same one been painted? Cheers

I've been boating for just over 50 years, and in that time I've owned some very nice sea-going cruisers. (Not "gin palaces", but well built purposeful craft around 55 to 85 feet long. I have also cruised for 40 years, starting on the 'Canberra' and going on from there, with a couple of World Cruises for good measure. I like to enjoy cruising, and always pick 1st class only ships. Yes, they cost a lot, but my goodness it's worth every penny. I enjoy 'dressing' for dinner and always wear a traditional dinner suit, (tuxedos are not formal, unless you're American). I have always worked hard, so a top quality cruise is my reward. I could never tolerate a 'cheap' cruise, and I've never understood the concept of an inside cabin! The oceans are beautiful, the shimmering water, passing whales, dolphins and other sea creatures are part of the experience. You haven't lived until you've watched the sun rise or set at sea; or seen the ocean bathed in gentle moonlight. Travelling with a full complement of like-minded passengers is always an enlightening experience too, and the social life aboard ship can be truly enthralling. Plus, there's far too much to enjoy to waste time with your head in a book. At sea, it's a different world; a world of wonder, amazing people, and wonderful sights and sounds. There's even a special name on a good 1st class ship for an inside cabin - it's called "The Brigg!" £1,029:00p? Are you sure you were on a cruise? You didn't accidentally bump your head and wind up on a tramp steamer did you? No, that can't be it; even Tramp Steamers are more fun - and one dresses for dinner too, just not quite as oppulently as on a proper cruise ship. I'm sorry David, but I found this video tedious. If you're going to cruise, do it properly. Perhaps you should stick to canals and rivers, those videos can be really interesting. Enough to persuade me to have my own narrow boat built to my specifications. Something I had little interest in before seeing videos from you, and others.

That was fantastic. Those tiny canal boats are just the ticket for solo men or women wanting to travel the canals and not have all the effort of a big narrow boat. A bed, potty, galley, what more do you need? With the outboard motor steering is effortless and refueling is easy. Do these tiny boat owners have to pay the same amount to travel and live on the canals?
