    I do cover low light in my latest 70D comparison, so check that for details. Also check my Photography Buying Guide (available at Amazon and the third link in the description). But the short answer is that the 7D and 70D won't be any different for low light still photos.

    I'm afraid the buying guide is no longer free, but it's only $4.99 at sdpcommunity*com or on Amazon ("Tony Northrup's Photography Buying Guide").

    Yeah, it's an awesome all-around camera. However, depending on your needs, you might be better off getting a less expensive camera and saving some of your budget for lenses, flashes, tripods, software, etc. Check my Photography Buying Guide (available at Amazon or by using the 'Worldwide' link in the description, with the coupon code) for detailed information about the best way to spend your budget on cameras and other equipment to really get great photos.

    I haven't used ALL-I mode (I'm still not sure why, since I never have any problem editing the standard video)... however, the KomputerBay 128GB SD card that I recommend in the video should be plenty fast.

    Wow, I was looking for your Canon 70D Camera Review (vs 7D, 5D Mark III, 5D Mark II): Video Recording video and ended up on this. I have basically zero interest in wildlife photography, but your video was so well done, so detailed, and your personality is great (reminds me of a digital photographer version of Bob Ross. Do you take photos of happy little trees?) that I ended up watching the entire 41 minute video. I think I've probably watched 3 videos on youtube over 30 minutes in my life. Well done sir. You have yourself another subscriber.

    Thanks, and yes, the Sonys SLT design is great for focusing with video. I've seen some side-by-side tests and it seems the Sony is a tiny bit better in good light, and the 70D is a tiny bit better in low light... but they both seem to get the job done.

  • @TonyAndChelsea

    Yeah, the T3i to the 70D is a good upgrade for sports and wildlife, more for the focusing system than the fps. The 24-105 is a good all-around lens, but not for a crop/compact body like the t3i and 70d--check my Photography Buying Guide (available using the 'worldwide' link in the description) for detailed recommendation. I also discuss exactly when and why you might need (or not need) IS in the Lens chapter of my Photography Buying Guide, and specifically I recommend different 70-200 lenses.

    Just wanted to say thanks for this video. It really helped me make an informed decision. I wanted the camera for 1. Wildlife, 2. Street / Candid 3. Video. I bought the 70D used with 18-135 STM and the 400mm L 5.6 and so far I am blown away. The video capabilities are great, the AF is fast, and the 400mm delivers crisp tack sharp images throughout the aperture range. I'm very happy and really looking forward to my wildlife trip. Just hope I'm not too close!

    Yeah, the 5D Mark II's low-light focusing is rough. The 6D's center AF point is probably the most powerful, but the 5D Mark III would probably work better with a wider area of focus points, so you wouldn't need to focus-recompose. The 7D or 70D would both be stronger than the 5D Mark II, but you'd lose the full-frame image quality in low light.

    That's part of the beauty of those old film cameras, you can get them CHEAP. That FED-3 was $20. If they don't work (which is fine if you just plan to use them for decoration) they can be even cheaper. Even my big Mamiya was only $225.

Now im just looking forward to get an upgrade cam - and even when i think is a bit expensive, i thought about getting the canon 5d mark iii... Would you suggest me this one as a good upgrade? Would be still ok shooting in my small room if i get the right lens? I aprreciate much sharpness and details once is about fashion photography... Thanks very much for any help!! Cheers

    Tony -- there have been many recent reports of a 70d focusing issue when using the center viewfinder (and not the LCD) with fast lenses (such as a 35 1.8 or 50 1.8), usually at some distance. See, e.g., Camerarec Toby's you tube video and site and several videos coming out of Germany. Do you believe there is a focusing issue with the 70d? If so, are you still recommending the camera?

    First of all props for making a wonderful video. I am a 7D owner at the moment and I am very happy with my camera. I am nowhere near pro level gear or experience wise but I try my best. There's one thing I wanted to mention here as well. 7D with it's newest firmware is capable of shooting up to 130 fps jpg and 25 fps raw. It also has manual audio control and the audio bars. You kinda missed them in the video. It happens just wanted to update the info. Again thx much for the video and I will be sure to check out your website for more info about general photography. P.S.: 7D also supports alpha version of magic lantern which adds a lot of cool features.

  • @srobart
    @srobart10 жыл бұрын

    I bought the cheapest sony SLT model, A58 specifically for video and I am REALLY impressed by it. It does away with one of the problems you experienced with the 70D, which was not being able to hold it to your eye during video. With the EVF, you can use it to your eye while capturing video, which gives you another point of stability too. The autofocus system is also SUPERB. Built-in stabilization (camera, not lens) is also really nice and functions beautifully for video as well as photos. The A58 is no match for my D7100 in terms of photography though. The low light performance is barely adequate on the A58 and you lose 1/3rd of a stop of light due to the translucent mirror. However, in bright, daylight situations, I haven't had any problems at all with it for either photography or videography. It's useless at night though, for video and even somewhat for photography, because you can't really see anything through the EVF or LCD, it just becomes horribly pixelated and nasty, so I wouldn't recommend it for anyone who shoots in darker conditions (I'd hate to use it for weddings, I think). It does have this auto twilight feature that takes insanely clean photographs at 6400 ISO...I'm talking better than my D7100, but it doesn't work at all on moving subjects. What it does is it takes 4 or 5 pictures, averages the noise out of them and presents you with a single picture and I was frankly a bit stunned by the quality, considering how hideous it looks at 6400 WITHOUT using that feature. That being said, I don't think the quality is equivalent to the 70D, as it only offers 24p at 24mbps, long GOP recording, or 28mbps at 60i (ew). The new A77 II has an even better focusing system though, 79 AF points which cover a large part of the screen, so you might want to give it a try for tracking birds. It also has a new way of focusing, it allows you to pick a point, but then it will also use the points around that chosen one to follow the focus. Gary Fong has a demo of it on his youtube page and it looks really impressive. It works beautifully for soccer photos and video. He told it to track his daughter's face and even though his son was moving back and forth in the frame, in front of her, it never lost focus on her face until she turned around, but when she turned facing the camera, it started tracking her again, it was really amazing. That may be precisely what you're looking for in terms of your daughter's soccer photography/videography since it can learn and track individual faces (not sure how accurate it would be during sporting events, but it might be worth a try if you can get your hands on the new A77 II when it comes out in the US on the 20th).

    Hi Tony, just to add to the FPS of the 7D... I noticed on mine that when the battery power goes below 50% the FPS drops from 8 to 6 (or 5)... I have no idea why it does this. Also if the EV metering senses that your frame is underexposed it also drops the FPS automatically. This was not the case with my 50D. Your thoughts/insight? Is this also the same case for the 70D? Cheers.

I'm leaning towards the 7d mk ii for both price and quality upgrades but I'm hung up on the full frame censor on the 5k mkiii. also I'm torn with saving money on the 7d (or the 70d) and to get my self a nice lens instead of putting all my money on a 5d mk iii. keep in mind my budget is around $3400 for everything. this isn't a hobby either, I've been doing freelance video and photography for about 5 years and I'm ready to take the plunge equipment wise for the long haul. I look forward to your response, thanks again

    Hello Tony. I bought a used 7d on your guidance and it is fabulous. I'm very happy with it. Thank you - hired the canon 400mm lens very cheaply with fab results too. Thanks again

    +thomas watson I'm no expert and generally rely on Tony's advice, though I do know that the 70d is a great camera, my son has one and yes, he used the 400mm lens with it, the photos turned out very sharp.

    This is a great review, thanks for it. I may have missed it but did you test and try out the wifi feature on the 70D. I have had a little play with it and using it for remote shooting but I really loved it to see my pictures on a different screen straight away. Not ideal for rapid shooting but I thought it was an interesting addition.

    Hi Tony. Would you say the EOS 70D is a good choice for someone starting out in photography, who wants decent quality images whilst learning/developing their skills? The 70D looks to be a perfect entry level camera for me. The auto mode looks simple enough and there is also a decent amount of manual control under the hood to explore once I get more knowledgeable and confident. All in all....it appears to be a perfect camera to learn before moving up to full frame. What do you think?

    One thing I'm extremely interested in but haven't really seen covered - I do mostly indoor, low light live music photography. I've been aiming for the 7D for a while due to low light performance and focusing abilities. Do you have any experience or opinion on how the 70D compares to the 7D in that regard? Assuming good fast lenses on both of course (Currently using 50mm 1.4 and 17-50 1.8)

    The two SD cards mentioned (Komputer bay, SanDisk) are both Class 10 UHS-1, so the same performance would be expected. When picking memory cards for photography, I would recommend looking at the speed classes, along with the size and capacity, as well as reliability. There are a lot of comparisons and tests available. Class 10, UHS 3 SD cards should give a significant improvement.

    You don't remove your CF card from your camera much do you? Do you transfer the info to your computer via USB cable?

    I watched your videos out of order...this one first and the previous one second and you give a very good close-up of it in the previous video (for those who are interested, it's the 5D M3, 5D M2, 70D vs 7D video). It really is a beautiful looking camera. There's something about those older cameras from the 50s, 60s and 70s that are just magical-looking. I would love to decorate my house with old film cameras, if I were wealthy, anyway. :) Thanks for the answer though.

    Good evening Tony Northrup. Just wondering how well that Komputerbay SD card has been holding up for so far. Has anything come up with it that you might think to be a problem with it, or has it been a staple to your memory card lineup? Basically, did it become the one card to rule them all, and in the darkness, BIND THEM.

    Dinner4Tuba We have about 10 of those Komputerbay 128GB SD cards, for several years now, and they all continue to work great. I just ordered another batch of them last week (you can never have too many). The only thing I don't use them for is sports & wildlife, b/c they're a bit slow. But for video and general shooting, they're perfect. BTW, they're not a sponsor or anything. We pay for all our SD cards out-of-pocket.

    Tony, love these videos... But when you talk about the difficulties with auto focusing while shooting video, is just manually focusing completely out of the question?? Surely that's the better option?

  • @TonyAndChelsea

    Morecambe Football Club We do usually fall back to manual focusing. However, none of these cameras have good facilities for manual focusing--you have to use the low-resolution display on the back, and there's no focus peaking. In professional video, you usually have a dedicated focus puller besides the cameraman. For most amateurs, relying on autofocus (for something like their kid's soccer game) is the best bet.

    Tony Northrup I do lot of portraits and landscape photography. I am not sure yet if I will go into sports or wild life photography. I have Canon 7D already and I am pretty much happy with it's focusing system. But what if I get the 5DM3 for just under $2000? Would you suggest me to go and get the Mark 3? Thank you.

    Tony, I couldn't find a review of the Canon eos 1dx, any thoughts of this camera for a professional wildlife photography quality? I'm thinking of purchasing a quality dslr camera, I'm going to need it for biology studies and why not combine my studies with my hobby. So do you think the 1dx is the best camera for wildlife photography or do you recommend something else?

  • @TonyAndChelsea

    @TonyAndChelsea

    Stefan Husa The AF and FPS are fantastic on the 1DX, but I generally prefer a higher megapixel camera, which is why I go for either the 7D (and its crop sensor) or the 5D Mark III if I can fill the frame. If you're just starting, get a used 7D and the 400mm f5.6 prime. And read Chapter 8 of Stunning Digital Photography. Enjoy!

    Tony, there is an important point that should be made when considering the 70D. Macro photography. I and several friends shoot mostly birds, but butterflies and dragonflies also using macro lenses. The flip out screen of the 70D would make shooting macro much easier, especially when the subject is on or near the ground.
