I been waiting for this review for a while! Thanks Toby great stuff!!
Your speech is very clean and it was a pleasure to see this video. Thank you for your recommendation.
thank you for the helping me choose what to buy next!!! merry Christmas!!!
Appreciate the early summary of the review!
Thank you for the review and for the quick bottom line..definite thumbs up !
As always, good stuff Toby.
Thanks for the review - I like your videos. I got the 70D about a year ago and I must admit....when I first heard about the 7D MK II I came abit obsessed about buying it. The reality is the newer camera won't make me a better photographer... rather a wider variety of quality lenses will help me explore different subjects. Unless you are a dedicated action photographer I feel the 70D coupled with the 18-35mm F1.8 and 70-200mm F2.8 USM II its a bloody great combination. In fact...all I want now is a decent 50mm and/or 85mm prime and that's it. I'll probably get the new Sigma 50mm F1.4 ART. I like sharp lenses.
thank you for making it easier for me to decide what to buy!!!
Thanks Toby. This was an excellent tutorial.
As always great informative video, thanks.
I am in the decision process. Your videos are very beneficial. If I purchase I will go through your site. You dedication to helping us less knowledgeable deserves that. Thanks. By the way, love the shirt.

the 60 frames in 1080 is actually huggggeeee. i own the 70d and there're so many times i wish i had it for my films...
Very good overview of these 2. I'm sticking with my 70d for sure.
what type of camera was used to shoot the video? It looks great

thank you so much for all the info was gonna go for the 7d II, but you outlined everything perfectly to help change my mind! 70 d it is!
Great video, I don't do much video, just photography, so, will be upgrading to the 70D from my T5i - thanks!
Hi Toby! I just discovered your channel and it is amazing. I like your video so much. The quality of the video is amazing. Can you tell me please which camera did you use to shot this video?
70D auto focus is pretty good for fast action I use a Sigma 150-500mm on one for airshows, you pretty much always have centre point selected, without having used the mark II, it would be safe to say that on paper the Mark II is better but the difference in practice like most things with mid level compared to upper level cameras these days is probably negligible unless you plan on over analysing every image pixel for pixel. It seems that the Mark II is just the 70D with more stuff, except wireless.
As a wildlife/landscape photographer/videographer and as a storm chaser, I settled this by getting both. lol The 7DII is my primary out in the elements shooter body and the 70D is my video dashcam. Throw on the 18-135 or the 10-18 IS STM lens or one of the primes and you got a recipe for success. Videos are on my channel using these cameras among others.
Super helpful, thank you!

Thanks for a great review. It reminds me how easy it is to get carried away with latest features that in most cases are not needed by the average producer. I do hope you will be able to review the Samsung N X 1.
I don't usually comment but Toby, you sir make excellent detailed, concise, clear and very informative reviews and comparisons. My hours fly! Thanks so much Toby! I got my 700d and later the 70d mainly based on your reviews, Keep it up!

Thank you Toby. I would love a 7dii but my pocket said 70D and good quality lenses. I am happy with the 70D but my heart still hankers after the 7Dii.
The 70D does have some autofocus configuration options in the custom functions menu. Less convenient and fewer than the 7D mk II but they are there.
Comprehensive review, thank you.
I have purchase my two Canon DLSR's the t4i and now the 7D mark ll, thx
Thanks . v informative
I'm a beauty blogger & makeup artist , what is the best for me .. 7D mark ii or the 70d ? help please :c
Consider also 760D (T6s). Easy to use and very capable. The kit lens 18-135mm is the best in the league, and 24 megapixel sensor.
im glad too have both cameras :) good thing i didnt sell my 70D
Thanks Toby, I purchased the 70D early this fall for taking pics of my sons hockey. I almost wish I had waited, or known about the 7DMII but have had really decent success with the 70D and the burst. I'm probably around 10 with a fast card.

mangydonkey 10 is good and 7fps is plenty fast. Do you notice any issue shooting under the arena lights? That is one other feature of the 7D Mark II that is nifty for indoor sports photographers. Anti-flickering feature - will make sure the shutter fires when the lights are brightest.
@mangydonkey
9 жыл бұрын
CameraRec Toby I sure do in some arenas especially the older ones. Shooting at the same settings I get a wide range of pictures that are unusable. I shot last night and my actual burst is an average of 8, not 10 as I previously stated.
The comparison to the 7D MkII I am interested in is the Samsung NX1. It has what looks to be a killer focus system, and its certainly suited to video. I think the cost through should mention lenses as there is no easy port of canon glass. So far the only NX1 video weakness I know of compared to the 7D MkII and 70D is that low light, its really ISO 1600, where as 70D is 3200, and the 7D MkII looks to be 6400 (which is the same as the 5D MkII).
Thank you so much Toby. This is a great review I appreciate that you took the time to do it. I am still trying to figure out which one to get. Which lenses do you recommend? Is the 18 - 135 a good general purpse lens for it. Would my old lenses EF 28-105 USM and EFS 17-85 IS USM be good with the 7D II or 70D?
Toby, thank you for articulating the difference between the 2 cameras and the reason to choose one over the other. I just placed an order for 70D /w EF-S18-135 to purchase from a duty free shop with a promotional price. Although I would love to have it before our family travel for Christmas, the promotional price made it worth it to wait. I currently have OLYM E-PL3 and I keep missing my children's indoor sports activity shots. Thank you for the very informative video. Getting an approval for underwater housing from the "boss" will be my next to-do. :)
There used to be a question TO BE OR NOT TO BE now there is another one TO SWITCH TO 7DM2 FROM 70D OR NOT;) that is my case as well. So, HAVING WATCHED THE TOBY'S OPINION the answer, for me, is NO NEED!
Video wise what would you suggest for making short films and really getting to know the craft?
You forgot about the clean 1080p external recording compatibility of the MK2. Nice feature if you need the extra quality.
can you at a later vid go over the proper card speed to use with the 7Dmll and do you have any idea when lightroom 5 will support raw of this camera
nyc comparision buddy
Hello Toby, Your comment on 70D AF custom features (or lack of them) is incorrect. You can set sensitivity, moving and acceleration sensitivity, etc. in the custom menu.
I had 70D - with fast cards = SanDisk Extreme 45Mbps write speed, You can get in it easily 15 full resolution RAW shots in a row before it slows down and infinite full size jpg's - it just never stops :)
Toby, Thank you for your insightful videos. I've been an enthusiast for sometime now and have been thinking about upgrading from my couple of years old t3i to a 70d. However, canon recently announced a new rebel, the t6s. Could you please do a comparison between the 70d and the new t6s to help understand which would be a better sub$1k deal?
First, I'd like to thank you for your review. I've been trying to figure out the differences between the two and found your review to be very helpful. I currently have a 6D. The most difficult shooting I do is gymnastics. Low light and high speed subjects... With the 6D, I have difficulty getting the shot. I can not use burst because it isn't fast enough. The other problem is keeping focus on my subject. There is a big difference between focus on the bar vs the face a few feet away. Not much depth of field on my Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM. I would like to be able to shoot video of moving subjects using auto focus and based on your review, I need the 7D with the video of the 70D. Will the 70D or the 7D M2 Improve my success? I am not a very experienced photographer, so it may be that I am not using the right functions. I shoot Tv at 1000 and I use the AI servo. If you recommend an upgrade, will I be able to get all the benefits with my current L lens? If you recommend the 7D, will I need to accept needing to carry something else for video? Thank you for your help.
Hi Tony great video. Just found your videos. I have owned a 70D and have many focusing problems with the camera. The pictures seem soft when I zoom in when viewing the pictures. I have heard others have encountered the same problems. I have been trying the single focusing point but still noticing the softness. I shoot a lot of weddings for friends and the sharpness just doesnt seem to be there with the 70D like it was with my Canon 20D. I am using the Canon L series 24-105 lens
Nice and concise... I won't be upgrading from my 70D to the 7DM2 but I am seriously looking at the Sony A7R instead of the 5DM3 as my next step as I do a lot of low light video and have been blown away by the A7R in this area, the more I shoot low light video the more I need something like the A7R. Thanks for the review Toby.

No I didn't see it CameraRec Toby, I did watch the full review done by Philip Bloom as well as the comparison recently done with the A7S, 5DM3 and the C100 (or C300 I forget now) by Film Riot. The A7S isn't for everyone but a very exciting camera for shooters like me!
Hi Toby even though you showed up that center focusing issue in canon 70d yet you recommend people to buy that...i mean what's the reason of buying the Camera when it is having a focusing issue at wide angle.
Great video, about to go and buy the 70D after a LOT of research. Could you recommend a good lens or two to go with this? (prime plus a variable) Any links to your vids on these reccommendations would be appreciated. Great vids mate. WIll reccommend your channel. David.

DaveDragon10 Are you planning on shooting video at all? Primarily photos? What kind of photos? All of these will factor into your decision. That being said, the 18-135 STM kit lens is a great lens to get started with for video or photos.
Great review as always. What about drive modes? Does the shutter have the same feel as the 70D? Is the silent drive mode any quieter? I tried a 6D recently and was immediately disappointed by my 70D's shutter sound and feel in comparison.

Good questions- silent mode seems about the same but I will followup with some additional videos soon.
Hi Toby. Thanks for the comparison videos. I'm still new to DSLR's but I own a Canon 600D kit. I also bought a TAMRON 70-300mm Lens to take zoom in shoots from distances. I'm a hobbyist and take pictures of everything Indoors & Outdoors but I also take photos and video of Race cars that are Stationary and while Racing/Moving from Track Side behind the Barriers and fencing. My question is I want to upgrade the camera kit and don't want to spend to much, around $1000. I have narrowed it down to these kits: 70D, 6D, 7D, 7DMK2. Which do you recommend for my application?
you say the 70d has no control over the autofocus settings. thats not true, you do get some basic settings on how fast your subject is moving, stopping and so on.
Witch one better for music videos
Hey Toby! I'm having trouble picking between these two cameras. I shoot a lot of landscape, but quite a bit of sports too. The sports I shoot are really fast paced (rally, snowboarding ect.). Do you recommend getting a 7d2, or a 70D and a new lens? Thanks! :)
Hi Toby! Great video! Big fan for a long time! What are your thoughts about the 70D vs the T6s? I'm about to buy my first DSLR and I was thinking to go for the 70D with the 18-135mm lens. I'll use for general photography and occasionally videos. What do you think? Thanks and greeting from Brazil!

Hi Toby, as always nice insights.. I am starting the dslr journey, I am confused between full frame and cropped sensor cameras.. The only good option I can see in the cropped sensor is 7d mark II..for full frame 6d is slightly old and 5d mark III is expensive.. Please suggest..
Thx for uploading, I know you're on limited time due to making this your fulltime job. Kudos good sir, kudos.
Hi. And what a great reviews... I was wondering about image quality from 7D m2? Could you elaborate a little on that? Is it better than 70D (in low ISO) and also how do you grade % of accurate focus shots while in burst mode? Thanx
hi Toby, can you please compare the continous AF system of canon 7d mkII & sony a6000
Sticking with my 70D
Toby, I purchased a Canon T5i back in 2013 after having watched several of your KZread videos and having talked to you about different camera body options. The camera has served me well over the past couple of years but I think that I am ready for an upgrade. Like many beginner/intermediate photographers, I am looking at potentially moving into the full frame world of photography for the very first time. I have a budget of between $1,800-2,000 to spend on a body and lens. I currently own a 55-250 STM, 50 f/1.8, and an EFS 24mm. I do understand that the 50mm is the only lens which I currently own that will function on a full frame body and that because of this, I will need to purchase a nice set of glass also. I mostly focus on landscape photography but also do a moderate level of sports photography for the school that my daughter attends. I am wondering if you could once again help steer me in the right direction for which option would be best for me. I have been looking into either purchasing the Canon 6d or the Nikon d610 but am not sure which would be the best choice for landscape with some sports shooting. Video is not a big requirement for me but crisp, high detailed images are. I have also looked at staying with a crop sensor and upgrading to either the 70d or the 7d Mark II simply for the fact that they seem to have good focusing sensors. I am concerned thought that the image quality with either will not be as good as a full frame body. For my current needs and with my budget what would be your recommendations for a body type and lens? Would it be more beneficial to stay with the T5i for the time being and spend the money on an L series canon lens, or to upgrade to a new body and purchase a slightly lower cost but still high image quality lens? I apologize about there being so much information in this message and thank you for you help once again. Thanks

While autofocusing do we hear the lens noise while taking video in 70D or 70DM2. My Nikon D3100 does make a noise. Also can u please tell me which camera are you using for making this video? Thanks
I use a 60d it works well ,the 7d m2 was recently purchased fiund it for $1,400.00 it fills in where the older 60d can not do the job call me old fashioned but these to me are lifetime purchases. The flip out screen is handy however I'm outdoors quite abit find that a weakness for hiking the touch screen is something i dont like as it leaves fingerprints to clean the two cards is very useful

I make videos as well as I'm getting into wedding photography and portraits, would you reccomend the 70d?
thx bro..
I wish the 7d mark ii had all the wi-fi functions as well as the possibility of using the screen to set the focus points. The iso range is very limited in the 70d and that must why the colors look a bit different in comparison with the 7dm2. Can you upload some video tests for both? Thanks in advance.
Hi Toby, I'm looking to get a new DSLR camera. I'm really interested to get one of these two cameras, but I'm really not sure which one to get. The camera should be preferably a canon since I got really nice/good canon lenses. It should be quite weather resistant since I want to take it to damp places, as well as really cold snowy ones and it shouldn't matter if it is a little rainy. I want to be able to film HD and take really sharp action/ movement pictures (e.g. snowboarding, skiing, tennis, kayaking, etc.). At the same time I'd like to bring it along on my travels. I'd like to be able to take nice wide angle shots of buildings, etc. too. To make a long story short I'd like to capture every moment on camera. What do you think?
@rmproductions465
9 жыл бұрын
I would recommend the 7d or 7d mark ii..they are both great cameras that produce superb images and have some great features within them. They are both adequately weather sealed, have a high burst rate and buffer speed, shoot full 1080p HD video and are not to heavy making it easy to carry around depending on what lens you have mounted. Perfect for people who like to travel and carry the camera with them as often as possible.
Good Stuff!
It's my first expérience to buy dslr camera. I chose the canon 70D because it's more simple to use.. Like autofocus, wifi, touch screen, and more cheaper.. What is your opinion ??!
For strictly video, would it be fair to say if i already own a 70D and the option to shoot 60FPS at 1080p isn't a big deal (i prefer 24FPS/1080p) that an upgrade to the 7D might not be that big of an advantage?
I am really interested in high framerate videos! I like the slow motion effect so I'd like to know which is better.

That was a precise & complete explanation, wonderful!! Dear Toby, can you come up with a comparison of a) 70D that I own with 4 lenses (18-55mm STM, 10-18mm STM, 50mm 1.8II & 55-250mm IS) to b) lighter cameras (panasonic GH4 with 12mm Olympus lens, Gopro Hero 4 etc)? I am seriously thinking about the latter ones, complete with gimbal & DJI S900 or Phantom-2. My 70D is totally a misfit for that!!

Dear Toby, about the drones that can take 70D with various lenses... I believe this is less tested area beyond me! Also, I do NOT have the kind of money for the drones that can take 5D (though it is told to be technically feasible!)
The old 7D or the 70D for a non professional? (wildlife and portrait)

you should do a duriabilty test on 7d markii
what is the battery life of the 7D Mark II when shooting video?
I have been shooting music videos with the 70D for about a year now and I LOVE it. It's the best Canon DSLR for video in my opinion. But recently I've been very frustrated at the fact that it doesn't have a "clean HDMI" output so it doesn't work with an external recorder like the Atomos Ninja recorders.

I actually started with the 18-135mm kit lens I got with my 70D and that's an awesome beginner lens in my opinion. I did some great stuff with that lens and still pull it out every once in awhile for certain shots. It's a great all around lens to start with.

Hi Toby, I have two 70D bodies (mainly for video) but I have been looking at the 100-400mm MARK 2 LENS and would like some guidance as to whether the 70D can accommodate that lens with a 1.4 teleconverter and still autofocus for wildlife photography. Appreciate any answers or thoughts.

I believe you will hit the f/8 max of the 70D as you zoom with the 1/4 converter on. Live view will work but that isn't really practical for wildlife. You can also tape the pins www.michaelfurtman.com/taping_the_pins.htm but focus will be much slower.
