Canon 5d Mark III in 2021. A Professional Photographers review in 2021 after 8 years use

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I have used Canon cameras for many years in my life as a professional photographer. From the 35mm A1 to the latest DSLR's . Here I talk about one of my favorites, the Canon 5d Mark 3. I talk about my experiences of using this camera, show some of the photographs taken with it and talk about how it holds up in 2021.

I love my Canon 5D MK III. Yes it's old, it's noisy, it's a freaking dinasaur that but you know what, something about the color in this 5D mk III make it special. I used this camera for portraits and I can tell you, this camera still a beast even in 2021.

I bought a 5dIII last year with only 15,000 shutter clicks for about $500 usd. Paired with my 24-105 f4, this combo is quite a workhorse, and the total cost was under $1,000 USD. I HIGHLY recommend this set up for anybody at any level. I am a "focus-recompose" person, so I don't care about all the auto focus advances on the newer systems. I'm doing a week long shoot at a camp soon, and this will be my main camera and lens for the week. Thanks for posting!

After nearly 40 years as a photographer I can honestly say in 2012 barley one month after the 5d Mkiii was available I knew I had just got a classic workhorse. I have worked with loads of different set-ups, from 4/3rds to 8"x10" cameras, the 5Dmkiii is simply the best camera I have owned. I switched over to Canon from Olympus digital with the 5Dmkii but I wasn't fully happy until the Mkiii [the Mkii and its shutter sound was never confidence building :) ]. Now I only shoot fine art landscape and I have moved "up" to the 5dsr for the file size and detail, I will never part with my "baby". Everyone can jump on the mirrorless band wagon, I will just keep plugging along with my 5D's. Thanks for a taking the time expressing a point of view on the merits of the classic DSLR's. It is refreshing to see a video that isn't all hype of new tech.

I just had a friend give me a Canon EOS 5D MIII. He went to the mirrorless cameras and said I had helped him so much with various projects, that he wanted me to have it. Now, I'm sitting here with a manual and YT videos trying to figure out how to use it. I've been using the Sony NEX5N, and 4X4 view, so a bit of a learning curve for me. After watching your video, at least I know I'm not wasting my time trying to learn this new camera. Enjoyed the video very much!

I bought a second-hand one 6 months ago with only about 30,000 shots at an unbeatable price. Impeccable. I invested some more money in three new lenses, a wide-angle Zoom, and two fixed focal lengths. I got fed up with my 40D after so much use and it starts to feel tired. It has been in my possession for 14 years. The 5D mkiii is outstanding. Photography is a great passion of mine, and I am very enthusiastic. I am so satisfied.

I bought a Nikon D3500 when we went into lockdown last year; I got the photography bug and bought a second-hand 5D Mk III a couple of months ago. It is an awesome camera. I just love using it. I paid a bit more than I wanted, simply because it had only 5000 shutter actuations. I have never spent so much time outside in nature. I'm a 59 year old novice but I'm enjoying every moment I spend photographing with my 5D. I can see why they are considered such a great camera.

It’s always great to hear from a professional who has put hundreds of thousands of clicks on these cameras. I’ve got the 5d Classic, and it has been such an invaluable tool, making me a much better photographer. I’ve been looking into adding a mkiii to my bag (I’m never selling the Classic), and your video has been very useful. You are spot on when you discuss the matter of budget. For an amateur, there’s really no point in spending thousands on the newest technology. This along with a couple of good lenses (and, as you said, there are so many of those) is more than enough to cover the needs of anyone

As 2022 came around I was trying figure out if I needed to upgrade, but after watching your video and several others, I have ultimately decided to continue using my dinosaur. Knowing that still in 2022, professionals like myself are still choosing to use their dino over newer cameras, helped me make my decision. I shoot long exposure and nature/travel photography, and my photographs are still as stunning as they were when I first purchased the camera.

The original owner bought both the camera and lens direct from Canon in 2015. It's such a thrill to shoot with this full frame camera and L type lens. @@RoyRiley Life is tough sometimes! I think of it like swimming in the ocean and sometimes there are these warm "bubbles" of water and sometimes there are cold ones, and often there is no discernable reason why. I have Crohn's disease and am going through a bit of a flare at the moment so I totally understand going through bad times!! With cameras: I bought the sx50HS for a trip a few years ago (German girl broke my heart don't ask! haha) as something that was portable. My current gf (Nora! - a good one (finally!)) has a 600D. I am wanting to get my first camera that I could start my business with essentially, doing weddings/gigs/music videos for friends. So that's what I'm looking at. Nora has 3 lenses and I'm quite used to Canon now so that's why I thought that I could get upgrade. I would some interviews and portrait photography too and maybe some sports photography so that's why I was thinking about the 5d III. But in the rabbit hole I have seen that some of the lenses might not actually be compatible. There are so many things to take into consideration and it's a bit of overwhelming. But when I was a kid, before I discovered drugs, sex and rock'n'roll (I mean psytrance) I wanted to be a filmmaker - and since sobering up it has been really cathartic to start picking up some of those old ambitions. My 20s felt like a war with myself and I'm just getting back on track. So this is the path I'm on, and really, your videos have been so fantastically helpful today. So I'm really glad that my comments could help you too somehow! I love that you have these semi viral videos and then you have vids that teach and give advice, reminds me of Spielberg when he would talk about doing one film to entertain and one to educate. They're really helpful, you get amazing results, love the photography and hungry to learn more, but the stories are great too. Starting a youtube channel this last year has been challenging, I know how it feels at times, but hang in there, amazing stuff, really, really appreciated! I on't know if you're planning on doing more tutorial videos, or even just like, breaking down the basics or building up to teaching and offering a paid course, I think it would be great. You don't take yourself too seriously and you're not shouting at the camera like some do, hope you keep it up! Cheers again. Adonis

I'll take your advice tho mate and have another look at the 70. Yes our channel is just about Leeds United, first year doing it, definitely trying to keep it fun, learned a LOT glad that I can not take it too seriously now and streaming instead of editing has been a massive time saver. I live in Vienna so I can't really film around the ground or do interviews which is something I want to do. I have worked in videography before for a mate in Tasmania filming weddings, really looking forward to getting back into it! Thanks for your messages and yeah hope my health will get back on track soon. all the best man! A livestream Q and A would be really cool "Snappy Saturday" or something haha I don't know. But yeah.. if you set up a Patreon or do a photography course I'll be in for it. Livestreaming is a bit nerve wracking at first, but honestly, it so much better than editing videos, and it's nice to interact with your community, I use restream but you could also go for streamyard, really easy to set up, relatively cheap, and yeah, it would really be cool to see you do that and upload more often. Great video, very Informative/helpful & inspiring. The mk 3 was a big leap forward from the mark 2 ( Which I still like and still have mine ), but I know a lot of photographers were disappointed in the mk 4, it wasn't that much of a leap forward from the mk 3, like the 3 was from the 2. The 4 is still a great camera but I think people were expecting a little bit more. That being said, I'm not getting rid of my mk3. It is still a great camera. I love the sound of the " Whisper quiet shutter setting " for weddings christenings et cetera. And all the other Improvement you mentioned, ( too many to list here ). I take it everywhere I go and it has never let me down. Also, What you said about a good quality used one can we get for very little money compared to when they first came out. I've been shooting canon since 1986, and they just keep getting better and better as a time goes by. As far as mirrorless goes, they got to work out some of the bugs that they have, but they'll get it done. Enjoy every day with your mk3. Keep shooting.

I've just found this channel - it's really good. I agree with all that you say about the 5dIII. It's a superb camera, and like you say, it's the last of the 'basic' view bodies with no touch screen, flip screen etc. And I like that. It's my favourite body that I use for more static subjects (I use the 1DX for moving subjects like football and some wedding stuff), and it's the go to body along with a 24-105 for 90% of what I shoot. The 5Diii and the 24-105 is a reliable and wise pairing. There's also one thing that I've noticed which I really like about the 5Diii - it seems to resist the accumulation of dust on the sensor. Every other camera I have had and presently own seem to act as magnets for dust, which is a real pain. But the 5Diii has never ever needed a sensor clean in the years I've owned it. It's been to wet hot jungles of Borneo for 3 months, countless weddings, countless portrait shoots and is thoroughly reliable. I won't be going mirrorless while it still works for me!

I love mine so much, I never liked the soft video and no af with it, but I have a standalone 4k camcorder for that. I just upgraded to an M6 for the improved high ISO noise and the silent shooting since I do a lot of animals, and picture for picture in tests I’ve done the M6 is better, but I will never get rid of my 5DM3 because of how I am one with it and it has never let me down nor taken a bad picture. It also feels more well built than the lighter M6. But I definitely do miss the top screen on the 5DM3 because the M6 has none!

I got my 5Dmk3 second hand, love it! I use it primarily for wildlife and Macro and like the quiet function on the shutter. Upgrade? To be honest I'd rather get a new L lens!!! Good informative video, thanks.

I love my purchase as well of a second hand 5dm3. Got it lucky with around 8k shutter. I dont do video, just still portraits. Its build like a tank. And the size is just right for my hands. Should i upgrade to a new body? Sure but not in the near future. I went on and invested on a couple of second hand Ef L lenses and im happy with the results. Used it a few days ago with a 85m 1.4 is prime & a 70-200mm 2.8 m2 and it was smooth. Thinking of going for a 35mm 1.4 m2 to complement my 85. Autofocus points is not as advance as eye focus/face detection features on mirrorless cameras but challenges is part of learning.

Interesting video. Five years ago I decided to take up photography after a 30 year break. Started witha a well abused 7D. Was kinda fun and one day I found a silly cheap and barely used 5D ii. After a evil accident, someone tried to steal my 5D ii but dropped it with no insurance covering things like that, I've decided to get a 5D iii. Will damage my planned raodtrip this summer but, I hope it's worth it. Should be able to get one in good dcondition with low shutter less than 700 GBP here. Only downside I can think about is the speed for sport. But I think if I can handle the camera, I will eventually make it.

Excellent video Roy, I have a couple of Mk 111's and I totally agree that they are probably the sweet spot. I have shot with the 5d Mk 1V and it has better resolution but as you say you have to be more careful with your technique ( which of course is a good thing ) and then of course second hand they will cost much more. I am still very happy with the quality from the Mk 111 and even though I have now bought an R6 I am still loving the files and user experience of this classic camera.

@@RoyRiley Don't make me choose ! The R6 is so quick it has really added to the amount of usable frames with live action and this was noted by a client who didn't know I was using a different camera. Maybe the 5D files need less work out of camera but better dynamic range on the R6 and all my EF lenses focus quickly on the R6. I do love seeing the real world through a viewfinder like yourself so pluses and minuses for both cameras so maybe I can leave it at too early to say for now.

The big advantage of the camera is its reliability. Regardless of the shooting conditions, you can be sure that the camera will deliver good results. However, I have always struggled with the low-light performance and the difficulty in recovering details from the shadows.

Hi. I have been taking photos since the early 1960s. My first camera was a Kodak Box Brownie (long since departed along with various other Kodak easy use cameras.) In the 1970s I graduated to a Canonet QL17 and then in the 80s and beyond to A1s and T90s. It took me a long time to go "digital" but, when I did, I started with an EOS 450D followed by a 7D (which I still use as a second body) and now my beloved and trusted 5D mk III. Now that I am 69 and retired, much as I would like to investigate new mirrorless technology - with the advantages for auto focusing etc. - I honestly cannot afford to make the transition. Over £4,000 for an R5 and equally eye watering prices for some of the lenses. Just because my 5D is old technology does not mean that it is not a great camera and it still takes fantastic photos. I hope to pick up some real bargains in lenses in future on the second hand market. Thank you for a very fair and honest review.

This was my first jump into professional cameras and remains my primary camera till this day after 8 years of use. I've climbed mountains with it, went to smoggy factories, and camped in the hot arabian desert where the lens become too hot to touch. I still look more beat up than my 5D and that's saying a lot 😂

Sounds like a good plan Neil! Going full frame after using a rebel can be quite a steep learning curve. Bigger, heavier, expensive and more complicated and often less forgiving but ultimately worthwhile and you will see your photography improve. Just stick with it and accept there is a learning curve to improvement. Hope this makes sense! Wishing you the very best of luck! RR

I run Canon full frame, APS-C and M43 alongside each other and it is a constant battle with regards which system to use. However, despite the obvious quality issues that full frame provides, the Lumix G9 is staggeringly good to use once you've taken the time to understand its nuances, capabilities and shortcomings.

Right now I'm considering the 5Diii used vs the Eos RP new. Pricepoint to get to full-frame and dynamic range is important right now. I love the clunky DSLR, its a classic and the day I learned the 5Div was the last in the series I honestly felt sad. I'm not sure if I'm ready to switch to mirrorless with Canon. Remember when Ferrari made a SUV groucerygetter for soccer moms? This is like that.

I bought my mkiii 2 years ago with a 24-105 for £1300. It had 9000 SA. It’s a beast of a camera. I use it for portrait/boudoir and my images are well over 98% in focus. I tend to find I’m deleting more files because my strobe may have missed more than I am for missed focus, it’s that good. I used it for a while for landscapes too with fantastic results, but I got fed up of swapping the battery grip out so I’ve gone back to my mkii for landscapes...images side by side, no difference. It’s probably not an ideal sport or nature camera, get a 1dxmkii for that...but anything else, you can’t go wrong.
