People should be aware that when cooking, especially outdoors, the wonderful aromas will draw every hungry person right to your food. Get informed on when and how to cook without being overrun by a mob or neighbors.

Sterno is an expensive fuel to 'cook' with. IT is designed to keep cooked food warm. It isn't meant to cook food from raw to finish. If you only need to cook 1 item and burn through your Sterno, go for it, but I wouldn't rely on sterno to cook for a week of power outages.

Many years ago, electricity and technology didn't exist. Yet they made meals every day. We just need to go back to that after an EMT attack.

People don't understand they need to be cooking outside just like you would without electric and running water. See what you need in equipment, fuel and how long it takes to cook meals without electric or gas. You will need alot of fuel. And if the electrical grid goes down you will not have gas fuel for long. If you don't stock pile it or use wood to cook with. It's a whole new way and different then cooking on gas, propane. And the amount of water is used up fast. Everyone should be trying to test themselves with cooking real food without gas, charcoal or propane. Wood can be easily found from fallen limbs of trees and other fuel. If you don't test yourself over and over the see what you need and need to gather for future events.

I bought a 6 quart Dutch Oven and a thing that makes a tripod when you put 3 branches through it. Much faster than lashing 3 branches.

If possible, shelf stable no cook foods should be available for use. Lots of different "already or fully cooked" canned, dehydrated, freeze dried and powdered goods don't need to be heated, or very little fuel needed to just heat up.

If I cook indoors with a wood stove it will need a reliable, well insulated, clean chimney or flue that will not catch my roof on fire. Safely managing an indoor wood stove requires much experience and knowledge that most of us do not have. Just saying, start practicing now if you plan to heat or cook with wood indoors during a future emergency.

When people run out of food or just don’t have things, cooking outside could attract unwanted attention. Finding ways to safely cook inside is better imo.

I cook a lot outside with fire and even solar ovens and recommend a wood gasifier stove, they're rather inexpensive, lightweight and most fuel efficient. A rocket stove would be my second choice

I save my clothes dryer lint in a bucket with a lid on it.. Free and efficient fire starter. I also have 2 dozen of the large BIC lighters. Better keep matches in a moisture proof container if you live in an area with high humidity. Consider a Sun Oven if you live in an a place that gets hours of daily sunshine. No fuel required except the sun and they can be found on-line. Inexpensive and they do work except they may take 10 hours to cook a chicken. Get several cast iron frying pans and pots. Cast Iron lasts forever and will not be destroyed by direct flames such as a Rocket Stove or over a camp fire.

I believe he is showing how people will have to prepare food and prepare water. If the grid goes down its going to take a very long time to get it back up and operating. Any fuel like propane tanks, or fuel to run generators will run out. The only way left to cook or warm people up is by fire fueled by wood. And cooking meals on wood fires is a action that you have to practice. You have to learn how to control the heat or everything will burn and stick. People need to practice cooking with wood heat if they never have or just made hot dogs and burgers. I have cook on my fireplace during winter and outdoor all summer into the 1st snow. I save on electric cost and save time cooking outside. I can even can my vegetables using wood heat outside. But, I was raised cooking on a fireplace and outdoors during the earliest of spring till the 1st snow. Cooking outside also gives your food a wonderful taste. People really need to practice cooking with propane, candles, rubbing achohel and wood fuel. It's a great way to use the limbs that's fallen or you have to trim. But, also using compressed leaves from the fall. Your dryer lint makes great fire starters and are free. You can build quick backyard rocket stoves or a nice setup with a grill, rod iron tripod to hang Dutch oven cast iron from and a pit for larger pots and pans for bigger groups. Old metal shelves from refrigerators and freezers, even the metal racks from ranges can be used. But if you have to bug out, you need to be able to set up a quick fireplace to heat up foods and water for hot drinks. It's difficult for some people who have not started fires without lighters and matches. All of it should be practiced on weekends as to know what you need to learn or items you need for cooking. You can't use plastic try to flip meats or stirring up cooking pots of food and you can only learn how to just the heat by practice. I hope everyone has prepared for the worst, and need very little of it. We are in a very difficult time right now. And it looks and sounds like we are going to be tried really hard in time. This is one thing I really hope I so wrong about.
