Biolite Basecamp In-Depth Review. Power, heat, cooking and light all in one stove.

I purchased the Biolite Basecamp last July. Worked on the review during use from last summer. The audio and video quality will vary during the review as time, locations and cameras are different.

    I first saw this stove at MakerFair New York. At that time they sold the biolite camp stove in the US, and only used the BaseCamp model for their projects in India and Africa. I'm glad to see you can get the BaseCamp ( or Home Stove, as they call it now) in the US, too. Tho it might seem silly in the woods, it will be great here in Florida for hurricane season. I hope biolite is making the stoves available to places like the Bahamas after Dorian. Thanks for measuring the thermoelectrics, that makes your videos especially informative. I also tested your Tyvek suit idea, and it allowed me to sleep without a sleeping bag in central Florida in late winter. I carried it in a vacuum bag made for vegetables and it was TINY in my pack! What a great (small, lightweight) emergency backup plan! Keep the videos coming!

    I’m watching a whole round of your videos and catching up on what I’ve missed. You have another video on that smaller mini Power stove. You and another channel where my early sources fir hot tenting. He put his Seek Outside stove pipe on top of that mini and used it to heat a small tent in temps around the freezing mark. Considering some of your hiking situations, temps and tent sizes, that might not be a bad experiment for you. It would have to be frequently loaded but would provide warmth and power. Just another option

I think beside the fact that it's massive one good advantage is that you can keep feeding it for hours without having to empty the ashes unlike the biolite stove 1 and 2 which I own and after an hours or so you need to empty the ashes because the bottom air hole are all plug up. Cheers!!!

    I have run this stove for maybe 6 hours at a clip before. All that's needed is removal of ashes which is easy with the ash pan. Can use long wood so takes minutes to process hours worth of fuel. Probably transfer nearly 4000 mAh into a powerbank over that time if so inclined.

    They should include a QC chip in the usb charger for modern phones. Be more efficient letting phone soak up the entire battery pack quickly than making you slowly sit there waiting when you could just charge the start a small fire and do other tasks while enjoying your phone while the battery pack recharges.

  • @MegaWoodswalker

    @MegaWoodswalker

    5 жыл бұрын

    It's easy. Just a brush and soap. The pan turns black over time. One side from the fire and the other as stuff gets carbonized into the metal (best words I could think of). This very very thin layer doesn't easily come off even to leave a visible residue on paper towels etc. Over time less things stick to the pan well which makes cleaning up a snap. Also burns less food.

    It's a little heartbreaking that Biolite chose to cheap out on the power side of things. If they'd simply put a 3-4 cell 18650 removable battery module (so you could swap cells in and out) and 4 times as many peltier modules, this thing would make some serious, usable power. At 2200mAh (or ...

    Hey Kevin, does the liner for the tent provide warmth? I watched a high viewer episode of yours on the Apalachian Trail and you talked about the liner. Seek Outside finally has a Cimarron liner but they told me it only keeps condensation off your gear and does not provide any warmth at all? I almost thought it would provide a double walled tent.

  • @MegaWoodswalker

    @MegaWoodswalker

    5 жыл бұрын

    There is a difference between a nest and liner so check and see what they're talking about. The Kifaru liner acts as a double wall which goes right to the ground. In addition to mitigating condensation it acts like a double wall and cuts down on drafts from the bottom. I can fell the temp difference between the walls and can say without question the shelter is warmer when the stove is running with a liner than without.

  • @jasonb7865

    @jasonb7865

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@MegaWoodswalkerThank you very much. I'll have to decide if I want to get the half liner for where my half nest is, or a full liner that has a cut out for the stove pipe. I was thinking the cut out for the stove pipe in their picture is a good chunk of the other half of the liner not covering it or it let's out heat / doesn't retain heat as well.

  • @MegaWoodswalker

    @MegaWoodswalker

    5 жыл бұрын

    There is a large area near the peak of my Kifaru tipis without the liner as it hangs from the clothes line and yet the shelter is still warmer. If their liner is grounded I would get a full one. Now once the stove burns down the increase would be more marginal but with the stove running a liner rocks in terms of heat and even more so with a smaller shelter. You also need to keep all those drips off your wood and gear.

  • @jasonb7865

    @jasonb7865

    The BioLite stoves seem really awesome. What I truly dislike about them is that the batteries are soldered. That should be illegal, as it means it has a limited lifespan. I don't know what it's like with this one, but with the Campstove 2, I hear it doens't work very well without the fan, which will only work for as long as the battery does. They defend that by saying the battery will last for thousands of cycles, but keeping a li-ion battery full, reduces its lifespan and considering you're probably going through one cycle every two hours or so, it's not really that impressive even if the stove lasts for thousands of cycles. If they had just made the battery user-replacable, then it wouldn't have an expiration date. It annoys me. DON'T PRODUCE GARBAGE!

  • @MightyMicrobes-

    Like ive told them when I emailed Biolite. It NEEDS a lid like a bbq! Just like the campstove 2 grill, It also needs a lid. Whoever made the cooking models doesnt cook much. It would cut cooking times in half. Just so stupid to see. Ive also noticed their "stainless steel" is china steel. It rusts really bad. Best thing they have is the thermo electric generator. All models are missing something and doesnt work right.

    The first stove did not work at all. The company replaced it promptly and the second stove would not charge by usb or by fire. I cut some apple wood up and burned it through the stove for an hour or so before it started charging and finally came on. It now works within seconds of a solid fire going in it. Unfortunate it started out like it did but the second stove now works like a charm. If the company had been unresponsive it would have been a negative experience, but I'd have to admit I love the stove.
