What’s wrong with a 5 speed gear? Why unnecessary changing gears on a 6 speed?

Indeed, 5 gears are perfectly fine, at least for the type of bikes I like to ride - cruisers & choppers. It seems to me, that the 6th gear is a bit of an obsession for US folks, who want it as an "overdrive" gear, just to maintain highway speeds with low(-er) revs and low(-er) fuel consumption. However, I have never ever felt a need for 6th on either my 2009 VL800 or 2003 VL800 (still giving out a pleasant sound at around 130kmph), and definitely not on my C90T (where I kick in the 5th only at around 100kmph).

@@buffalodebill7986 I don’t get it. The max speed limit in the US is quite low, to low revs ruins the engine, lower oil transfer trough the engine etc etc. I ride a Moto Guzzi. It works the best between 4K-5K revs, so why doing 3k in 5th gear (no 6th gear available).

@@basdebruin2355 Well, each engine & clutch are different, so there's no general, hard "min revs" limit - but yes, under-revving as such is a common malpractice / mistake a lot of (a.o.) cruiser riders do and indeed, in long term, it may cause issues with the engine a/o clutch - which is why I don't do that 🙂 As an example - my the VL800 K9 idled at around 1k rpm, so I typically shifted up only when above 3k rpm, which was roughly at +10kmph above the manual-given speeds - and the bike had zero issues throughout its 11 seasons with me riding it. My GF does the same for the 2003 model of the same bike (though, this one's carbureted, so under-revving would be really felt - and oooh it was, when she just started riding it 😀). The C90T I have is a different beast, quite capable of handling some under-revving - but I also avoid doing so, for the same reasons as given above. The US speed limits may be a bit more varied than ones here in the EU, but I'd say that the 50kmph (~30mph) for urban areas, 90/100kmph (~55/60mph) for local roads and 130kmph (~80mph) for highways are the same.

@@buffalodebill7986 The vast majority of bikers just ‘are biking around’ and don’t do their own maintenance and repairs. They don’t understand what’s happening under their butt. It doesn’t the bike any good. Like not understanding what revs do with high power bikes. Scary dangerous. Stay safe and keep your rubber on the grey stuff with the odd white lines. 😉

Good analysis. IMO, the price is relative to your financial means. The price of the Multistrada seems a bit high, but then , no one ever said Ducati was cheap.

You can find BMWR18 lightly used in dealers for 10-12k. Looks like lot of them got traded in early.I suspect lack of feet forward position may be the culprit.Despite of riding position limitation I love R18 and plan on buying one.Its a timeless work of ART

This is why I bought a 1994 Harley Davidson Electra Glide Classic. It has 125000 miles on it. It makes good power. It stops well. It does not leak nor consume oil. Also, it is carbureted.

Everything is way over the top these days & it will only get worse. Handlebars on all the bikes today are WRONG. Big BMW being blacked out is CRAP. Strip all that garbage off that H.D. & you'll have a great bike.Hayabusa- nothing needed-great bike as is.Triumph: same engine in all their street bikes but a different tune on the style. Nothing new really but more $. And all of them except the Kawasaki W800 look like a plastic model kit. They just do not look real man.
