    1. surf in the upper half of the wave 2. eyes lead the way on turns (look back at the whitewater) 3. open the shoulders (eyes, head, and shoulders lead the turn) (hands act as pivot points) 4. coil, press, release (use your hips) 5. ride the best board (round and thick might be better) 6. slow down 7. think independently, don't follow the crowd

I definitely fall into the trap of rushing, particularly when waiting in a busy line-up and a good wave finally comes my way, I am so excited to get surfing I simply mess up my pop-up and wipe out. So the other day I took your advice and had a peak at a break around the corner from the usual spot, the waves may not have been as good but I got a ton of waves and was really able to relax on the wave and enjoy my surfing, cheers 😊

Hey mate, I’m a intermediate surfer in sunny QLD. I put in place a couple of your suggestions on this video last weekend. I noticed a big improvement on my performance - it was so good! I’ve started taking off at more of an angle and REALLY digging in hard and getting up the wave and back down. It’s kinda tough to generate speed on a longboard, but now I can make nearly most sections. Now I just need to translate a lot of this into my midlength and eventually a shortboard with some solid waves.

Hey man, I just wanted to seriously Thankyou. You’ve hugely improved my surfing (at least how it feels!!) in the last few sessions alone, before I used to take off and just gun down the line for a section, easpecially on my forehand. Now, I have your voice in the back of my head saying, ‘ match the speed of the wave’ .. and I’m surfing so much more smooth. Secondly, I’m really thinking about how my board feels, not how I feel on it. Trying to notice the nuances before I buy a new board soon, which will likely be an inferno. Thanks again man.

Mainly wanting the wave to adapt to my surfing tecnic instead of the opposite, i'm too energetic on the waves and not waiting makes me not have the speed i requier because i'm not surfing on the pocket. thanks for all your tips, i'll pay more attention to them,

Thanks for the tips Kale. I'm definitely the first one where I get caught at the bottom of the wave and don't get in that power zone to pick up speed. I liked your tip about looking up at the lip as soon as I bottom turn, and following my hand. It helped and I'm trying do that more each time. My boyfriend really liked your tip about using the head and shoulders more on his turns. He was able to pick more speed and better complete his turns. Let us know how we can continue to support you. So much good advice here! I’m nudging 50, so we never had KZread and guys like Kale for our surf guidance. Wrong board was my major hindrance for a very long time. It was only 10 years ago that I got appropriately volumed and shaped boards to get me heaps more wave time. My surfing transformed from there. What a waste of decades! Never mind, I’m still stoked and enjoying the experience. I only have a long board for desperate grovel days… I vow to be riding a short board at least until I’m 60, thanks to boards like FW Baked Potato, Helium tech etc. Proud to say one mistake I never made, Surfing with the crowd. I hate crowds. I often turn up to beaches and see the surfers grouped in a swarm (or infestation, as I consider it) and see equivalent waves untouched nearby, so I go to those. After 1/2h or so people usually notice the waves I’m scoring and paddle over, or new arrivals paddle out to join. I even saw this crowd effect in Rio once, whilst there on a work trip. I counted 30 surfers competing for one break (Arpoador on a small day), whilst the same quality waves were only 200m away with only 3 guys. I paddled out, waited my turn, gave way to a guy who didn’t make a wave previous set, to show some respect to the locals, then scored some good fun ones and joined them in a great session. We were whooping each other and having a great time. Thanks for the great content Kale, from a 49yo grom (grom since 16 and loving it).

Thanks Kale. I learn so much from all of your video tutorials. I have been guilty of doing of all mistakes. Rushing has been my number 1 continued mistake. From your previous videos I’ve been most successful when looking to the top of the wave after popping up & then looking back to the whitewater from top turns . I still need to concentrate on riding more in the top third of the wave. Practicing all the time now on the smoothstar is starting to gives me some flow, from head, arm, body rotation, with lifting & compressing movement.. Great work!! If possible some more smoothstar training drills; linking bottom turns, to top turns, to cutback, to foam re-entry would be fantastic, to know I’m training correctly. Really appreciate your work!! Besides buying your products, I’ll even watch more of the adds. Cheers

The arms! It’s all about the arms! I did one thing Kale talked about in another video and did (what felt like) a searing top turn on my forehand! I was like 😮woah. This is the main thing that was holding me back from linking turns together with proper speed, power and flow on my forehand. Backhand wasn’t a problem. A bit of context, I’ve been a surfer for 25 years and done plenty of top turns before but seems I’ve fudged together my own way of managing which was hit and miss or a bit clunky. Game changer! Cheers Kale 🤠🤙

I could stand to get a bit lower definitely also the eyes and open shoulders would help. I'd also like to think I get high on the face of the wave but I've not managed to get myself on film. So who knows on that one. And I've been known to sacrifice technique for a rushed pop up on the first wave and immediately eat it.

Incredible tips Kale! It's a little eerie almost that you're able to analyze my problems with surfing having never seen me surf... Random other note, I've noticed that on longboards, 9 foot and up, most riders don't compress at all when trimming or doing classic longboarding tricks. I imagine this is due to the amount of drive a longboard has and lack of critical turns they do (although some do pretty radical turns). Any thoughts on this?

Good observation champ - yes because they’re not exploding into turns they’re just trimming using the impetus of the long board!

Gday, from what i see, longboards work like planks, allowing the riders to freely walk along and back, hang tens etc, handstands, tandem moves, its a unique tradition, carving is more a modern action, but longboards also are more prolific at catching waves, they can take off well on a 6 inch blimp , and follow it all the way to the shore!

Awesome content again, made me laugh as well! Have been profiting a lot of your videos Kale, thanks a lot. So a bit off topic, but, where are most of your videos shot? It’s looking so beautiful! I got into surfing just 2 months ago and have been practicing almost daily here in Nicaragua and I have progressed loads!! Planning on doing a surf and work holiday in Australia next year. Greeting from a Dutchie in Nicaragua 🤙

Kale, your videos are a huge help and always excited for the next one to come out! 🤙🏼 Ive recently stepped down from riding noserider logs to a 5’6 fish. I love how skatey it is but I constantly have trouble catching waves. I’m catching them later and trying to angle more but it seems like I can’t get out in front of the white wash before it closes out. Any tips?! Thanks!!

That’s a big step down. Paddle speed and pop up speed so maybe the board is too smalll?

Based on experience, Looking back on turns works mostly when the wave is not too vertical yet.

✊Kale, gr8 ! You mentioned torque a few times, and board selection, power to weight ratios, ive developed better mobility on a skateboard, but so much depends on proper board selection, after that the rest is easier, although not less dangerous ! Plus the other key tip ive heard is to get back up the wave asap, ie vertical re-entry, its the max use of the critical section. 👍

Hi, this was great. Really helpful. I am super interested in finding out more about surfboard choice. I am in the market for a new one and would love something that will help my surfing not hinder it. Looking forward to hearing more from you about it (as you seemed to hint a vid on it is coming).
