Working in retail is hard, I know. But sometimes awkward things happen while trying on clothes, or trying to pay without signing up for a high-interest store credit card. If you have any similar pet peeves or horror stories, let me know in the comments!

    Wanna hear one of Sale Mishaps? In a warehouse store, they started placing "Two for One Sale" posters a whole MONTH before the product was actually on sale. I was like: "... But why?" Had to go put one of the things back :'( -ended up leaving both because might as well wait.

    Regarding something I heard in #6 - I have begun hearing as I've left stores and my fitness club, employees calling out, "Have a good one!" I am 66 years old, and that phrase is not in my vocabulary. Even if "day" were to be substituted for "one", I understand the meaning more, but it"s still not something I'd automatically tell someone. And it is automatic, like those motion-detecting Halloween and Christmas decorations. I know it's automatic because they say it even when I'm going toward but not yet through the door, not yet ready to leave. Oh, and by the way. the proper response to "thank you" is "you're welcome", not, "no problem", "no worries", or "my pleasure".

    Our company has a whiteboard with all the cards an individual sold in my managers office. We would get in trouble if we had 0 cards sold. We are constantly pressured to give people debt and we are told "it's part of your job", "it's just buisness". Another thing that annoys me is how I constantly get caught by my manager doing something stupid once and all the other good things I do that my manager doesn't see gets overpowered by that one bad thing I did. Giving me anxiety, making me think I will lose my job.

    The ghosting isn't always our fault, especially if you work in a large corporate store. They staff us really minimally and then give us a huge list of stuff we have to do by ourselves. I've walked into the back while the store was empty to do something for a few mins only to come back to 10 people on the store and 2 at the counter waiting to check out already because our store leaves me alone so much.

    My old retail job made us try to have extensive conversations with every customer. We were told to ask about their weekend plans, what they bought at other stores, etc. As someone who likes to shop in peace, I did not like this policy. I’m fine with just being greeted and then sent on my way. Now when I go to my old store or others in the same chain, I just say “I’ve worked here” and they leave me in peace. Also, the store credit card at my store had such an insane interest rate that I didn’t make a huge effort to sell it. My management always pushed for me to sell credit cards, but I didn’t push customers if they said “no.”

    Similar to ghosting is the employee who is "too busy" to help you. When I worked retail we were trained to put anything else that we were doing (except helping another customer) down to help make that sale...but today that rarely happens. It seems the customer is bothering the employee just to ask a question...and yes, I understand that the questions are annoying to the employee, but they can lose a sale if the attitude is wrong.

    As a retail worker, I'm totally guilty of hovering. Usually you can kinda tell when someone just doesn't want to be helped, but I'm surprised that "hovering" is on the list because what most people want is human interaction. Someone to help them find the piece they don't know they need or wanted. Finding a balance is difficult. Retail is in a tough place, but 90% of shoppers are in discovery phase. ALSO asking for a price adjustment A MONTH, after you purchased something is just ridiculous, and I'm amazed at how many people do it. If you wreck your piece because, 1. You washed it incorrectly 2. Got a snag somehow 3. It's more than 2 years old and you suddenly decide it didn't wear well it's not the brand/store/retail workers fault.

  • @AbbeyHowe

    @AbbeyHowe

    5 жыл бұрын

    Totally get it. I think, for me, I get anxiety when I shop so it is stressful when someone is around me hovering. I also feel like they think I might steal something?? Also, the price adjustment one does not belong in this list. After it was edited, I was like... oh dang it. It should go in the annoying customers one!

  • @Ally_Sammons
    @Ally_Sammons5 жыл бұрын

    I feel like the sales thing is not necessarily the employees fault. I mean if I bought something a week before and it was on sale for a lot cheaper when I came back I wouldn't ask for compensation because that was my choice to buy it before (I get that you don't know it would be on sale later) and I wouldn't think the employees are the ones setting up the sales and what goes on sale so it's not their fault. I don't know, correct me if I'm wrong or explain to me why it's the employees fault? (If that's not what's being said please tell me that too, I'm genuinely curious)

  • @AbbeyHowe

    I confess, I pull the 'ghosting' move whenever it's one minute before the end of my shift. :P I swear, even if I decide to use that last minute to ring up a customer or take a call before I clock out, I'll always end up with a difficult customer doing a 20 minute return or an overly chatty-person on the other line who wants me to order a million things for her. ;-;

    Most of these are for places that work on commission. Stop shopping in those places if you don’t like how they treat you. The sale thing just return the expensive one and buy the sale one.
