$7.41 Extreme Auction Flip Makeover - This top was SO damaged |
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
I won this buffet at auction for $7.41. I forgot I even bid on it until I got the notification that I won. Well, the joke was on me, because the top had major damage from melted candle wax.
I tried to re-veneer it, but I must not have used the correct glue or I didn’t apply the glue correctly because I had some pockets that didn’t adhere. I took it all off and decided to fill it in and paint over it.
That was not fun because it was difficult to get a completely smooth surface. I used several products, but the last one was my favorite and really smoothed everything out.
Wow, what a beast, but now it’s a beauty!
What do you think?

You stated your purchase price. I was curious about the total cost of products purchased to fix, how many hours of labor, and the final sold price.

You need contact cement for the veneer. And for the bondo…use a 3” plastic spatula.. also on the veneer you need something to smooth out the bubbles. Been there, done it and it works great 👍🏻

I use rubber cement to glue the veneer. In a well ventilated space, apply cement to both furniture surface and veneer back. Let both dry thoroughly. Space out long, thin dowel rods on surface. Align veneer on top. Working from the center, pull the middle rod out and smooth outward. Remove rods, one at a time, and smooth as you go. Once down, it will not come off! So make sure you are lined up!!! This method never fails me. You talked about the veneer lifting. I've never had that to happen with rubber cement.

Match sticks work well to they are a little softer . It is looking good though . You should have used a wet cloth and iron it again .
Hi! Great job! One tip for doing veneer sheets. When you’re done ironing (you can iron directly on like a 4-5 setting so mid setting) take a wet cloth or sponge and wipe it down this will show you the spots that didn’t glue down all the way 🫶🏼 then iron those out! But great job! Super helpful to watch you do this!!
@ivylaneinteriors
5 ай бұрын
I was able to iron the spots down, but I was concerned about the long term. That is why I decided to take it off. It was just a fail all the way around 😩
@jessamynsommers5007

They would have stayed down. The moisture didn’t cause the lifting, it just revealed where you don’t have a good bond.
@garbagechan
5 ай бұрын
came here to post this, its normal to not get all the glue set on the first go when doing it like this, you'll want to wipe it down with water and check for your lifted spots and iron those down, let it set, then do that a couple more times till you feel like you've got them all. worse case scenario they will show when you put on your final varnish/wax/etc and you'll have to iron it then re varnish the area

So beautiful! The legs were perfect for the piece. I really love your perseverance and honesty. A joint knife or taping knife would definitely help with smoothing out filler on larger areas. And as a few others have said, contact cement may be the way to go in the future. The painted top looks as good as the stained wood veneer, though. Wonderful job.

Since there's obvious wax on this piece, clean that I would suggest the following: clean off all the wax you can with your scraper and vacuum whatever, cover the waxed areas with a couple of layers of paper towels then using a pretty warm, warm iron go over the wet, the paper towels and see how much wax they can pull out of the wood with the heat And the paper towels to absorb the wax. You might be very surprised at how much you can get out of the surface that way. I tried this once, and it pretty much took almost all the wax out of the surface very easily. I've also raises the nap on the surface of the wood, which takes out, minor gouges and scrapes.

You did a beautiful job ... but the amount of work you put into it was extreme. If you saw another piece that would require a similar amount of intense effort, would you go for it? Or pass? You are a WARRIOR! Thank you for sharing your experience with this piece!!! 🧡
