Seeing rival all-stars like Derek Jeter shaking hands and greeting Ted Williams at Fenway is one of the lasting images in sports.

The 2021 "Field of Dreams" game sent me (back) here to the beginning of the 1999 All-Star game.

The opening ceremony was just beautiful and emotional. Then Pedro came in and was masterful. Great stuff

What a moment. I had chills the entire time Ted Williams was on the field

All those big, top-of-their-game, world-class ballplayers with the world at their feet, crowding around with their eyes popping out, like Little Leaguers looking for an autograph. That's because they know they just met the greatest hitter who ever lived.

DivineSimply I didn’t know that Babe Ruth was there, lol. Ted was an amazing hitter there’s no doubt about it, but Ruth and Gehrig are the top two on my list, if Gehrig didn’t get sick he could have padded his already insane career stats. Ruth is the greatest baseball player ever because of this, before he was the most dominant hitter of all time he was a beast of a pitcher. In 1916 he was 23-12 with a 1.75 ERA, 40 starts, 9 complete game shutouts and in 323.2 innings pitched he surrendered ZERO, yes ZERO home runs, that to me is an incredible ball player. I’m a Mets fan by the way, not a Yankee fan waxing poetic about my teams historical past.

Ted Williams said in an interview that you can't assume hypothetical situations. If he and Bob Feller were not in the service what records would they have broken or established cannot be assumed.

I love every second of the all century team introduction. Seeing the smiles on those boys faces as they get cheered on for what might be some of their last time. Only thing that hurts me is Mickey and Joe D passed before the all century team was created.

I'm no Red Sox fan, but even I loved the intro with Ted Williams around the 36:00 mark.

RIP Blockbuster.. RIP 20th Century. The pre-show nearly made me cry, tears were in my eyes. God damn i love baseball! I played little league from 4-16 and those were the best damn times of my life, with all the friends I made some of which I still actively keep in touch with today. All because I experienced a slice t of what makes calling America home life great, but the most important part of it all was having my father by my side through the wild and crazy ride.

I was 12 y/o when I watched this with my dad. When Ted Williams came out, it was the first time I really saw the old man cry. Our love of baseball was so strong back then. Getting out of LL and moving into middle school baseball. I miss this time sometimes. Baseball was everything and this moment is so special

That first pitch ceremony is one of the most amazing moments in baseball history.

2021 and I came to watch this amazing game to see this master piece

Still gives me chills listening to the opening promo, and the ending promo. ESP knowing it happened at Fenway in my state

As a Boston sports fan this was my fave sports moment watching the mythical Ted Williams tip his cap at Fenway one last time along with the other legends being introduced

Definitely one of the most incredible moments in baseball, when they all come out to meet Ted Williams...still get chills from that

Tony Gwynn and Ted Williams had a special bond with each other. I truly believe there was nothing but love and respect between the 2 of them. Gwynn was the last man who truly was talented enough to hit 400.

And for one brief moment in time, everyone on that field were like children again, surrounding their childhood hero with nothing but smiles.....and were reminded by the baseball gods that in the end, it's just a game. This was truly a magical moment in baseball history.

Being an impressionable kid at the age of 11 I, like so many other kids around the world were so lucky to experience watching this on TV. We'll never get to witness line-ups like these before. What a great memory. Thanks for making this watchable to the public.

For those of you who never saw this as it happened, Ted Williams avoided Fenway Park after he retired. This was his first public appearance. It reminded me of the movie CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND, when everyone walked up to the aliens. :-) It was also the last time we looked at MLB players with wide eyes and respect. There we see McGwire whom I went out of my way to watch as he belted out home run #53, I collected all tickets that had him break the HR record. Folks tried to obtain those tickets as collectibles and now they are just kindling. Yet seeing Ted Williams was a thrill.

I was actually there and yes, goosebumps for sure, but actual tears streamed down my face with every introduction. It was amazing.

Best pedro performance. In front of his home city, 6 of the best batters. Struck out 5 of them and the 6th made it to first on a error by the 2nd baseman who was in awe of what he was witnessing and caught of his guard. Amazing to watch again and we will probably not see anything like it in our lifetime again.

What a great tribute to some of the greatest players of the 20th century! I miss those mask cams, I can't imagine what a 103 mph Aroldis Chapman fastball looks like with that; especially since we have HD GoPro cams now... Entertaining All-Star game too :D crazy how Ichiro had the exact same rundown to 1st base to start the AL in 2001 as Lofton did in this one.

I never saw it originally until now. I heard so much about it. yes even years later it choked me up especially watching when Ted Williams came out. I got misty I can tell you, lol

I was 10 when this game happened and I remember recognizing, even at my young age, just how much more special THIS game was than all the rest. The all-century team, Ted Williams being carted out and seeing how excited he was to shake Tony Gwynn's hand (the only guy in this whole game who actually could have hit .400, he almost did in 1994 BTW, the both grew up in San Diego, CA too). Goddamn man, this brought a tear to my eye. Thanks for posting.

Thank you so much for downloading the entire pre-game, and particularly The Splendid Splinter. He's been my baseball hero since I was a 9 year old in 1960, and the more I learned about him later, the more I admired him. Maybe the greatest hitter who ever lived, but his character, his integrity, and his service to his country in two wars makes him my hero. I've not seen his like since, but I keep hoping. I hope you are up there timing a Bob Feller fastball right now.

The intro was bone chilling and haunting... EPIC.

This is not just the best All-Star game. It's one of the most remarkable events in the history of baseball. Aside from Ted Williams' entrance and asides with players, there are a bunch of little moments that are priceless, including Reggie Jackson mouthing the words "Carl Yastrzemski" when Yaz is introduced, Jim Rice getting Willie Mays' autograph. Oh, yeah, then there was the game and Pedro racking up Ks. And who better to sing the National Anthem than Donna Summer? An all-around dream game.

Winding down the millennium... I like it. Kenny Lofton and Albert Belle belong in the Hall of Fame.

It's the best ever all star game with Ted and Pedro at the same time in stadium.

They didn't even invite Sandy Koufax. Apparently they assumed he wouldn't come. No excuse for that. He would have been there if asked.

Tony Shaking hands with Ted is the best thing to happen ever, San Diegan to San Diegan, and local icon to national icon. I didn’t have the chance to meet or see either one, but I’m glad that they met each other and in baseball’s oldest ballpark, to me if I think about it more and more it’s one of the coolest and greatest things to happen in baseball and San Diego sports history, it wasn’t game changing at all, it was just an incredible moment in baseball

This literally felt like I was watching a real life Field of Dreams. Especially since some of the All Century team has passed. Almost as if death was defeated and this was some grand reunion in heaven in the future.
