I kinda wish states would protect these giants a lot better. Like no bow hunting and a limit of some sort...I just love them. I probably live as far away from Gar as you can get. Great Video and amazing fish as always!

there are limits, you can only harvest 1 with a bow or one with a rod and reel in TX, some places even have a draw tag. Also anglers kill just as many, many that are caught with hook and line they swallow the hooks down into their belly and throat and will kill the fish. So yes there are plenty of regulations out there already.

A fish swallowing a hook is not a death sentence. I caught a 41 inch Muskie on a live bait a few years ago and released it with the hook still down in its throat. A few weeks later my buddy caught the same fish in the same spot and there was no sign of my hook in its throat. He unfortunately kept the fish due to a (bogus) catch and kill derby ongoing that weekend. We cut open it’s stomach and the hook wasn’t there either.

@@shanelizotte6318 it might not have at point but hooks in the throat and gills can kill fish it happens all the time, I have caught fish deep and could not release them due too bleeding, thats why the circle was invented too help with mortality of deep hooked fish.

Cool video Ty!! And I think it's a good thing using strong line to catch huge toothy fish otherwise you risk breaking off a big hook or lure and that fish has to live with it for a couple months or die if it's mouth is hooked shut. So 50lb braid isnt a bad thing IMHO 😊 P.S. I hadn't even gotten to 7:30 when I made this comment and that's exactly what I was talking about.... P.P.S. Always enjoy the slow-mo and replays cause Id have to do it myself otherwise LOL thanks Ty!!!

A big live shad under a balloon wouldn’t last 2 minutes thrown into that river. I catch a lot of long nosed gar at night under lights and in the early spring into summer on big live bluegill on the lake here.
