I’m 63 and have it now. The pain is so horrible. I’ve had severe pain now for two weeks and my job is losing patience with me. Most people that I’ve talked to think the pain should be over in two to three days. Mine is on my stomach and around my left side to the middle of my back. My insides feel like they are being wrung out like a washcloth. 😢

I have had 4 babies. 3 without medication. Shingles pain is the worst pain I have ever had. I went to the doctor right away and got antiviral drugs. My doctor told me that is so important to help prevent lasting pain. I am happy to say after a month ( yes a month) I have no residual pain.

I feel your pain. I’m 62 and have Shingles since mid October (now Nov 11). I too thought I pulled a muscle in my back and a couple days later I got a rash on my bra line under my right boob. GREAT!! SO ITCHY!!! It progressed to around my back to my spine on the right side. Calamine lotion and Tylenol were my friends until I got prescribed Lyrica for the Shingles virus and Pregabalin for nerve pain. OMG sleeping was impossible most nights. With those 2 meds I got so foggy minded and tired I did sleep when I could. Now my blisters are subsided, not itchy hardly, rash almost gone but STILL have that stupid nerve twinges/pain and for awhile under my boob I was numb! HOPEFULLY it will get back to normal in the next few weeks/months because I would NOT wish this on my worst enemy. As soon as I’m able, I’m getting the Shingrix vaccine. Take care of yourself.

I just got over shingles on my face. So I made a mixture of manuka honey and beef tallow. I put this mixture on my face 24/7. It kept the pain down and the rash never blistered or scabbed over. The rash just faded and healed slowly over the month. It was so helpful. To avoid cronic ongoing nerve pain, I ate a high l'ysine diet and took alot of potent supplements. To keep healing the nerves I am taking R-alpha lipoic acid.

I'm in my first week of Shingles at the moment and due to go on holiday in a week's time, so not great timing. At almost 65 years of age, it's the first time that I've had Shingles. I had Chicken Pox almost fifty years ago. A nasty flu about 3 weeks ago is probably what took my defenses down enough to allow the varicela-zoster virus to come out from its hiding place. The other contributory factors would be age and genetics, although there may well have been other significant factors I'm not aware of. As my initial symtoms made me believe it was some kind of muscle injury (just like you described), I didn't go to see the doctor until day 5. The start of the skin rash was on day 3, which made me think it might be Shingles. I then left it a day before calling the doctor and was given an appointment for the following day. The doctor confirmed this and gave me prescription for antiviral treatment, blister spray and pain relief. I started those at the beginning of day 6, so I lost 3 days in getting treatment, but better late than never as they say... My rash is on the right side chest area and right side upper back area, with right armpit pain but no rash there. So far, it's been manageable with taking 1g of paracetamol every 4 hours - although the instructions recommends every 8 hours! I was also prescribed a stronger painkilker, but I never take anything stronger than Paracetamol or Ibuprophen. The Ibuprophen doesn't do anything for me, so I just use Paracetamol. The pain control only really lasts 2.5 hours, so of the 4 hours between doses I still experience a fair bit of pain and discomfort. I know it won't last forever, so I just have to grin and bear it, plus moan and groan quite a bit, sometimes quite loudly! So, once I'm through this I'll be asking for the Shingles vaccine, as here in Spain it's now available on the health service for people over 64. It's only been made available recently, so I wasn't aware of it until now, (too late for me this time!). I'll also take advantage of the seasonal flu vaccine next Autumn - something I've never done before. Fortunately, both of these vaccines are available for free under the Spanish health service. My current antiviral treatment isn't free, as I haven't reached pension age yet. A 21-day treatment of antiviral capsules and blister-drying spray costs 68€ with the health card, otherwise it's double that price.

I had shingles in my early 50’s. They occurred following a car accident. I didn’t get injured in the accident but the trauma (rear ended on the interstate when traffic was at a standstill) triggered them. Just a horrible experience and pain/discomfort that was indescribable. I hope as I write this on 12/17/23 that you are near 100% recovered.

You poor thing! You have really been through it with shingles. So glad you are on the mend now. I did find your channel because of your previous shingles video. I fall into the "elderly" category (age 66) you mentioned, and got shingles last month. Started as a rash that itched and then burned, and then started spreading on one side of my body. Nothing as bad as your rash, but painful nonetheless. It started on a Friday with itch and fatigue, so I missed the ideal window of 3 days for treating it with an antiviral, however by that Wednesday, my doctor prescribed the antiviral, which still helped a lot in preventing the rash from developing further. The rash took a very long time to resolve. I am now in week 6, and it is finally fading away. Takeaways: see a doctor ASAP so you can get started on an antiviral (which was easy to take - no side effects at all); cool showers, keep it clean but use a mild non-soap cleaner like Cetaphil or Cerave wash; do not touch/scratch the rash or you can potentially spread it. It is the fluid inside the blisters that can potentially make it contagious to others; if you develop nerve pain (which can be excruciating), tell your doctor so they can prescribe medication for that. I took Gabapentin for a few days, but had to stop because it caused optical migraines for me. Also if the rash continues past the 3-5 weeks that it normally takes to clear up, let your doctor know about it. If you can get the Shingles vaccine, get it. It is typically not recommended for those under 50 because it has not been tested in younger people, so FDA has not approved (yet). I have a feeling that if the number of younger people getting shingles goes up, that will change.

I got shingles a week ago. Very serendipitously I was at the doc for something unrelated and mentioned this new pain. I thought I had a string of bug bites - I sleep with cats. I got on an antiviral immediately the first day the red bumps appeared. A week later I think getting on the medicine right away has helped move me through what I pray is the worst of it. OMG…the pain and discomfort are horrific. Wearing a very tight tank top and binding my middle with an ace bandage has helped some. What that does is prevent my clothing for swishing around, negating that sensation, which can make you want to crawl out of your skin.

This is febuary 3rd and I have shingles. I will turn 60 in March. I have a great job not stressful it's actually fun. However back in October my husband was diagnosed with AML leukemia. I have been his caregiver taking care of him making sure he gets his met correct medicine taking him back and forth to some of her his chemo sessions. It has put a lot of stress on me because I'm trying to balance this and make sure I can get to work and do my job So the stress level definitely elevated. Last weekend I thought I had pulled a muscle in my back because I put on a little bit of weight from stress eating and I thought I had just been over wrong and stressed a muscle in my back. All weekend I laid on a heating pad you know I would get up and try to stretch or do something and then lay on the heating pad and it just didn't seem to be working or alleviating the pain. By Monday the pain went around my back and then it started going down my leg. It felt like somebody was taking needles and pins and just stabbing them up and down my left leg, very painful. on Monday I ended up going to the hospital because I thought I had hurt my back and maybe did something to my sciatic nerve because the pain was going down my leg my left leg. I ended up being in there Monday Tuesday and Wednesday because they were giving me I had gotten dehydrated so they were giving me fluids and steroids to try to help with the inflammation. The steroids did kind of take the pain away. So I was able to get out of the hospital on January 31st. When I got home I took a hot bath. Which shingles accelerates from the heat you don't take a hot bath. So what I got out of the bathtub I looked in the mirror and I had this rash that came around my back down my hip down the front of my belly down towards my groin down the side of my leg and it was like splotchy there wasn't there was a couple of blisters under what I call a fat flat because when I was in the hospital and getting steroids and fluids my belly just swelled up so I have this like big belly and you could lift it up it was just like a it had these little marks underneath and I'm like what is that it look like snake bites a couple of snake bites and I thought oh my god it did something getting my car and then while I was driving home it got up in my shirt and down and do that to me it was so scary . Then the rash was very splotchy like it there'd be a splotch of rash then about two or three inches another rash two or three inches another rush it was like it wasn't real steady and all together it just was splotchy and I didn't know what it was I thought could this be shingles cuz everybody seems to be coming with shingles lately. I ended up putting calamine lotion on it. We live in the country so you have to have calamine lotion in case you get into poison ivy or poison oak. So I put the, lotion on it and it was very painful I was miserable so I took some Aleve that way it could help with the inflammation. I went to work and I showed one of my good friends and coworker and she told me that kind of looks like shingles. Needless to say I was having pains under my skin. Like pins and needles and I had some numbness. so come Friday I decided I needed to go see a doctor cuz this was something very serious and I didn't know what it was it was very scary. When I show my doctor immediately said it was shingles. I have gotten medicine to treat this but I have to be very very careful because of my husband and his cancer so luckily my son and helping out with my husband because I cannot let my husband get something like this even though he's taking a lot of preventive medicine to keep him from getting anything. So I am just taking the medicine right now it's only been a week I was supposed to get a cream and then my insurance wouldn't approve it. So one of the remedies that I have done is take a cool bath in Epsom salt. And wash with mild soap and put calamine lotion on the rash. Today is Saturday and this morning I woke up with a sore throat and it has been raining all day long. I'm not sure what's going on with the sore throat but I am taking some cold and flu medication to treat that. I am hoping to be able to go back to work on Monday but I will have to just wait and see. I've been doing a lot of research about shingles and I came across your video. I am sure that mine was brought on from stress of trying to balance my work and take care of my husband while he goes through his treatments. Thank you for sharing your story.

PAIN, that is me now. I have had kidney stones which I was told was the worst pain. Compared to my current shingles, the stones were a walk in the park. On an irregular time frame, I feel as though someone is applying a cutting torch to the back of my head and face. It feels like my eye is going to pop out. As the pain session begins to subside, my lower back will spasm for 20-30 seconds. Lidocaine cream and Eucalyptus oil have helped increase the time between pain events, but not the severity of the pain. Pain killers are pretty much useless as the pain is random and by the time the meds take effect, the event is over. Into my second month now, and the pain sessions have decreased to once or twice a day. The unfortunate thing is that they are now occurring during the night vs daytime at the onset...

The pain from shingles is a walk in the park compared to those. But like you, I thought I pulled a muscle but in my right shoulder. I work full time as a truck driver and deliver slabs of granite used for countertops.

Thx for posting. I have shingles all over my arm and between my finger joints and on my breast. Man it hurts and burns. I also feel like I get “freezer burn” feeling in my elbow. I’m so tired and uncomfortable. My GP put me in lock down for a few weeks. I’m on Valtrex and oxycodone.

I currently have shingles, I’m a 66yr old female, I have the rash on my left buttock down to back of my knee. Today is day 15, the rash is drying up and scabbing over but the nerve pain now comes in periodic waves versus the constant burning needle stabbing I had for first 13 days. At week one I felt like I had the worst flu ever, temp, body aches, severe migraines and severe nerve pain. I took the antiviral for 7 days beginning on day 3. This medicine made me very sick for two days when I started it, I vomited constantly and could not keep even water down for 3 days until my body adjusted to it. I have spent a small fortune on creams, ointments, and vitamins in these 2 weeks. I wish I could say 1 medication worked but none of the creams, sprays, or ointments work for more then 1 hr to just cool skin. Lidocaine’s didn’t do anything for me, calamine I think cools the rash the best but is messy and I apply it hourly. I am taking prescription pain medication and gabapentin if I didn’t already have these for a bad spine condition I don’t know how I would have made it to day 15. I drink tons of water have minimal appetite but force myself to eat fruit, spinach omelette, or toast bread. I’m taking vitamin C, D, zinc, and L-lysine as well to boost my immune system. My rash is leaving ugly medium brown color spots, periodically I’m applying a scar gel to the darker spots that are dry. I had hip replacement surgery 6 months ago and I thought that was the most painful thing I’ve ever gone thru, but shingles nerve pain is right up there with that. I just pray this goes away soon I’m not as worried about spots or scarring as i am about not having this nerve pain. Shingles sucks, my dr advised to get the shingles vaccine once im completely over this virus, but im worried because I’ve heard some people get shingles after getting vaccinated. However my husband got his last week and is fine.

Stacy it’s 3 AM and I’m up because of shingles. I have a question for you. You say it will get better but let me describe mine. I have the sunburn feeling on my entire left arm which I could deal with in the jabbing pain I can deal with but about every hour and a half or two I get a massive attack that lasts four minutes that leaves me on the floor completely wiped out my arm complete your cramps up and the pain is simply unbearable. It stops after five minutes and then I go back to a more normal feeling and then I can feel it building up again for the next attack. This is not changed over the last five weeks so I’m considering getting a nerve block and wanted to see your thoughts or should say hear your thoughts on this because you keep saying it will get better but I am afraid it is not going to, and there is no indication that it is improving. It’s been incredibly painful for the last five weeks with no improvement some nights I’ll get 22 attacks and I’m off every hour with an attack.

Why is it that I only find this on the downhill slide of my shingles experience? I am 70+ yrs old, healthy, active and retired for 3 yrs (thanks to Co vid😡) My dance with shingles began with what I thought was a reaction to laundry detergent due to previous experience...I preface my comments on extended review of what shingles is, where/how it manifests and visits to and communication with my doctor: #1. Shingles is only contagious to those who have never had chicken pox. Those exposed to shingles with no history of chicken pox should expect to be diagnosed with chicken pox.... #2. The pain of shingles cannot be expressed in any formation of words no matter your language. #3. There is no expected time limit.....mine has lasted for about 7 weeks and I have heard from friends where it lasted for months and some for years. I hope this sheds some light , but above all, please don't take this lightly and ask everyone you know for their experience. Especially important, seek medical advice, asap!

The major discomfort that disrupted sleeping, elevated my pressure, and surpressed my appetite Yes! The intense itchy feeling And YES! That creepy-crawling sensation under my skin that ran along the infected area that drove me nuts! That was the worst and sleep deprived weekend I experienced, and at that point not knowing what was happening to me compounded the whole experience. After going to the ER and being diagnosed, dealing with it became less stressful. And like you, I picked up some Benadryl, pop them like m&ms and slept. Along with that was the valacyclovir anti-viral med which gave me relief!!! I would not wish this on my was enermy.

@@snugxxxh4578 hey. The arm nerve pain diminished for me after the blistering had scabbed over. This could be due to the fact that the Lyrica I had started taking was kicking in. So when the blisters started drying up the peripheral pain had eased in the arms, stomach and hair but the pain where the blisters were massively increased in intensity into a strong burning pain that was unbearable. The rash has mostly cleared up now but you can still see where it was. It’s still a little painful to touch where I had the rash but now it’s just mostly itchiness.
