I had shingles in 2019. It felt like the longest heart attack!! It is as you described & more!! I STILL have the nerve pain & even have nerve damage. Even gabapentin doesn't always control the pain. Shingles is NO joke!!!

Agreed it’s like a 6 week continuous heart attack. My shingles was right on my chest and wrapped around my ribs and to my back. It felt like I was getting stabbed my Michael myers over and over in the chest. Gabapentin give me zero relief. I’m not sleeping at all. They refuse to give me real pain meds even though I told them that I took 2 Percocet that I had left over from a previous surgery. Gabapentin doesn’t work at all for me.

I got a shingles shot in my 60s and then the two shots at 65 and I still came down with a bad case of shingles. Likely I start the antiviral right away is the worst pain I have ever had and I’ve had kidney stones and I’ve given birth to five children with no drugs, this is no joke. I wish the commercials on TV or truthful and told you can still get shingles even if you’ve been vaccinated.

Thank you so much. I have had shingles for around 2 months now. I am in misery as I am typing this comment. I’m so disgusted with what’s going on with me now! I can’t stop this involuntary jerking movement. I feel especially at night time my brains are going to explode. Also the itching, tingling and I have had four surgeries and 2 children, nothing can compare to the pain and suffering I’m going through.

Get to your doctor and get lidocaine patches they will give you some relieve but unfortunately you can only wear 3 a day for max 12 hours so pick the worst time. Have you tried gabapentin or pregabalin? Neither worked for me but does for many people I am told. I have phn for going on eight years now and although the pain lessens somewhat it is always there and even a breeze or a bra causes excruciating pain still but hey ho life goes on. Do hope you get some relief.

I just broke out with the shingles rash last week. I however felt really crappy the whole week before that. Weird headache, chills, fatigue, and muscle aches. I was convinced it was Covid. I tested negative on several Covid tests. I woke up last Friday and the left front bottom of my ribcage felt like I was punched. The pain was continuous and throbbing. I felt the area and noticed there were bumps under my left ribcage. I went to urgent Care and sure enough it was the start of the shingles. I am on day four of antiviral medication. My rash has grown considerably and it's nasty. The pain is still awful especially at night WHEN I'M TRYING TO SLEEP and in the mornings. "I do" wish this on my worst enemy. It's miserable.

I got in in 1979, when I was 27 years old. Lasted 2 months the bad phase and the nerve pain and numbness in my left shoulder lasted 30 years. No treatment in those days. One night my husband actually pulled me back from the balcony as I was going to throw myself off. I just couldn't stand the pain anymore. My doctor, close to retirement, said it was the worst case he had seen in all all life. Will never ever forget it. It is so common that anything that can be done to prevent it or mitigate the symptoms is great. Thank goodness there have been improvements in the 45 years since I got it.

Thankfully it was summer and I could wear strapless tops! Otherwise I wouldn't have been able to leave the house! Glad you made it through! When mine started, I knew right away what it was (lots of pain early on) because my dad had had it on his forehead. Yes, we were worried. This was 50 years ago for me...not a lot of treatment for it back then!

He immediately got a shingles shot. I don’t know if it will help the virus from getting worse. He is on antibiotic and some kind of cream. I had not idea how painful it is. I got shingles about 5/6 weeks ago. I’m on a targeted therapy treatment for metastatic breast cancer and had a mastectomy about 16 months ago and I understand that shingles can be common in people with a low immune system. Before the rash appeared I had pain all across my chest and ribs on the operated side and generally felt bad. I thought my tumours had come back but it proved to be shingles, so while better than the alternative, it has been very very painful as it spread across the scar tissue from the mastectomy. Notwithstanding my having been a vegan for twelve years (I'm 75 years old), I just found your website due to my having erupted in my own case of Shingles. My case began on my forearms (yes, both sides); a friend suggested that the slight itching might be hives, something I'd heard of, but never seen. So, I went with that. Eventually, there were rashes around my waist and down my legs that made me question my first amateur diagnosis. Soon, I was getting splitting neural pains, from the top of my head to my jaw and then, the crowning glory, half (yes, only one half) of my head turned bright red, then broke out into an exciting display of blisters on the top of my nose and surrounding one eye, both of which became quite swollen, with the eye closing. Finally, after the typical 3 week waiting period with my Senior "Advantage" plan, a doctor agreed to see the old man with the funny face. And two weeks later, I'm still waiting to lose the the evidence that covers my face and eye. So, thank you for sharing your experience with this condition. As you say, it's a painful event, and one that, if one is unlucky enough, can blind and/or follow one through the end of life. Your discussion will inform and may calm others who find themselves caught with this condition. If this tome is annoying, at least you've gotten a new subscriber out of the experience. Thanks, again.

I’m going through this right now. I went to the ER, thinking it was my kidney before the rash broke out. I did have a UTI, so the Dr. prescribed an antibiotic and sent me home. A week later the rash started, so I went to Urgent Care and was diagnosed with Shingles. The pain hasn’t let up yet and it’s been two weeks. Taking the Gabapentin does very little. I’m still taking the antiviral medication and praying this stops soon. Kathleen A.

First if all ... ONE IN THREE PEOPLE GET THIS! GET THE VAX BEFORE TOO LATE. TELL EVERYONE YOU KNOW TO DO THE SAME. Especially men, as you guys just do not have the pain threshold we ladies have. It seems. Been a pescaterian for 30+ years. Very well rounded diet. Never smoked. Anything. Never overweight. Rarely ever have had alcohol. Etc. I would have had the Vax anyway, had my primary care doctor ever mentioned it !! But she was too busy trying to push me to take statins ( extremely not needed by me...seems she was reading someone else's blood work). My prelude to full blown facial, ear shingles was weeks of a one sided sore throat. Still treating that. But spraying lidocaine with iodine I finally added at my own risk, and one pain over with. Visit to a clinic, and REQUEST for TESTING was ignored!! Misdiagnosed completely opposite of Rxs I needed. I was and am quite sick. Pull myself together at times. Very hard to sleep. Very hard to get well from anything without sleep. I'm sort of anti Vax. But this has me convinced my immune system is not what it was. I'll have both the China virus shots AND for post shingles as soon as I can. At least my eye is OK, so far. Too little hearing to worry about anything but constant, plus nerve 'zinger' pain in it.

It was worse at night to the point I had to regularly apply anti viral cream to soothe the burning sensation. The viral tablets I got from the doctor must have helped a lot since it didn't spread and I don't have that prolonged nerve pain afterwards that I read can happen. Now I just have the rash which is slowly dissappraring.

Many people get shingles on both sides of their bodies. I've had it on both sides, and my doctor told me that many of his patients also get them on both sides. Eating a plant-based diet rich in nutrients is great, but my plant-based doc told me to stay away from cruciferous veggies and high-sugar fruits as well as black beans and kidney beans. He said to eat white beans, lots of dark leafy greens, and potatoes. He advised limiting my grain intake. When I followed his advice, my shingles dissipated right away. One thing that really helped with the mental anguish was eating lots of mushrooms. Sounds odd, but it worked for me.

I make all the meals, so this is extremely helpful to know which foods I should avoid. She eats black beans about 3 times a week so I will be removing that from our diet for a bit to see if it helps while adding in more leafy greens & potato. @@XxNegative1 Truly sorry that you are having a shingles outbreak. I know how painful it is. I actually started having nerve pain in my neck an entire month in advance - I simply thought I twisted my neck muscle in my sleep and ignored it. A month later - a rash appeared and then painful blisters formed. In total, the entire process took 2 weeks to heal: phase 1 is painless rash, phase 2 is painful and burning blisters pop up (took 5 days to heal after I started anti-virals), and finally scabs appear that peep off (I still have scars). Once your blisters scab - you wont feel a thing. The worst part is when the blisters pop up on your skin - feels like being pocked by hot needles. I suggest you start taking anti-virals because that helps to dry off the blisters. Dont touch the blisters - if it burn, simply rinse off with cold water and let it air dry. Start the antivirals right away and hang in there. Let me know if you have other questions.

You're right about the stabbing pain - like someone walked up behind me and stabbed me with sewing needle (I'm guessing). The one consolation is that pain usually means you've injured something, but since this virus is in the nerve cells I know I'm not injured and so the pain is, again, deeply annoying rather than concerning. Actually, I find that physical exertion lessens my symptoms; it's at its worst at night when I'm laying still trying to fall asleep. I saw another video say that a cold compress helps; a cold beer bottle feels pretty good, so I guess I'll try the compress - in addition to the beer. ;)

You didn't mention getting shingles on your head, which is where I got it. On the left side of my head, under my hair, and the rash/sores traveled down my left ear and behind, down my neck and under my chin. Very painful, but I'm on the medications you mentioned, which are helping. I appreciate your information on getting off of gabapentin, especially. Thank you for sharing!

Oh a fellow young shingles-person! How was your pain levels? I was around 32 when I first had it and since then Ive had it twice (Im 34 now). If I get very stressed for a longer period I can be 100% sure to get cold sores and shingles. My shingle-rashes were definitely very sore but they didn't hurt at all as much as for most other people. Maybe it is because of younger age? I heard it gets more severe with age and how many times you had it before.

I just met a person that suffers from shingles, it affected her face. and she has had this condition for 23 years! I have no knowledge of this condition so I couldn't offer her any solutions. Sounds so horrible. She makes herself busy with volunteer work to deal with her pain. In other words, she believes you can't hold two thoughts in your mind at the same time, I suppose. Thanks for the knowledge!

I’ve got it now. Right hip to knee. Just had surgery 2 weeks ago and was trying to recover and then my leg began to ache. I couldn’t figure out where the pain was coming from or why! 7 days later small bumps which continued to spread and still are. Pain is unbearable! Anti viral medication and Gabapentin. Luckily had a few left over pain killers and 1 of those with the gabapentin I do get some relief. If you’re reading this and suffering call your doctor! This is no joke and no one deserves to suffer. Thanks for sharing your story. Glad I found you.

Hi I found your vlog very interesting as iam going through the same thing at the moment, shingles that is.I have had it for a week and like you never knew what it was because all I had in the beginning was the pain which was very bad I have it under my left breast and around to my left side.I went to see my doctor because I didn't know what to do about the pain, he sent me for an xray which showed up nothing and that was that. The nest thing I was going to do was go to A&E but while I was waiting to go another doctor phoned and asked me about it she said have you got any rash with it I said yes and then that was when she told me it was shingles, and I was put on the same medication as you.Iam still in a lot of pain I can't seem to do much I don't want to go out my diet is awful ad I have a very upset stomach. In all I feel really ill.I wouldn't wish it on anyone.oh I forgot to say the rash was very itchy but they recommend calamine lotion for it.Debs

Get the Vax anyway, unless at least a few Dr opinions highly recommend against it. Try and fight it from returning. Or PHN from being so bad. And don't be afraid of taking GABAPENTIN. It's not bad.

I'm 52 and getting over shingles now. It started two months ago, but I had no idea what it was. I had horrible nerve pain from the outside of my left hip all the way to my two smallest left toes and down the outside of my left arm all the way to my pinkie finger. It was horrible and my doctor, acupuncturist, and chiropractor tried to help with the pain, but had no idea what it was. It wasn't until a week and a half ago that I got small blisters on the inside of my left arm just below my elbow. The area is only about 1-1/2" x 1". The blisters never hurt, but as soon as they appeared the nerve pain in my leg and arm started fading. I have used a natural salve, Manuka honey, and Arnica gel, and the blisters are just about healed. It was definitely some of the worst pain I have ever felt.

Dealing with shingles on my face currently. Not too bad on the blisters luckily, just a small patch on my cheek. I was given antiviral medication the same day I noticed the rash appear, so hopefully it helps. For pain they only gave me ibuprofen and tylenol and it doesn't really help much. The trigeminal nerve pain is excruciating, like someone stabbing me in the ear, jaws, and temple. It's definitely not something I'd wish on anyone. Glad you didn't have any complications or lingering issues!

Just came across this. Vegan as well, but your description, time line, EVERYTHING, mirrored mine. The pain is still in the lower right side. Two weeks in. Finished the course of Valtrex. The rash is all but gone, but the pain lingers. Sometimes minor, like a dull toothache, sometimes more severe. Worse at night. I have not really slept well for two weeks. I am hoping to avoid PHN, and since I am only two weeks into this, I would imagine it will linger. How is your pain index now, if you don't mind me asking? BTW. VERY helpful video.

I know they say you can never have shingles on both sides but I did. It was the third time I'd had them. Neither of the first two times was very bad. The third time was not a patch but a straight line on each side of my chest. Yes it came in waves and also gave me a bad headache. My 17 year old grandson got chicken pox from me. He was also very sick.
