Welcome to the Martial Arts Journey KZread channel!
My name is Rokas. I'm a Lithuanian guy who trained Aikido for 14 years, 7 of them running a professional Aikido Dojo until eventually I realized that Aikido does not live up to what it promises.
Lead by this realization I decided to make a daring step to close my Aikido Dojo and move to Portland, Oregon for six months to start training MMA at the famous Straight Blast Gym Headquarters under head coach Matt Thornton.
After six months intensive training I had my first amateur MMA fight after which I moved back to Lithuania. During all of this time I am documenting my experience through my KZread channel called "Martial Arts Journey".
Now I am slowly setting up plans to continue training MMA under quality guidance and getting ready for my next MMA fight as I further document and share my journey and discoveries.

Yes running away is usually the best self defense. But deescalation is just as important and being able to calm people down. Having worked as a security guard I solved 90% of all “threatening” situations with talking calm but strict. One thing they have not touched on yet is a thing that happened when I was working at a hospital as a security guard late at night. I found a drug addict in the church room and he was sleeping and I could see he was high as fuck with needles everywhere. I was going to remove him out of the hospital when I noticed he had a machete just beside him. So instead of taking him out myself i locked him in the room and called the police and waited for them to bring him out. Locking someone in and wait for assistance is also very good in self defense situations.
1)Mike listing all the bad things about his current health situation: "I'm spending way too much time with Sensei Seth." 2) "I thought you were a SENSEI not SENSITIVE?!?" That woman played a full time professional Aussie there. 3) I expected Jeff's ASRPS (auto stress response panic sprawl) to kick in during scenario 3. "Was I the only one who was legitimately concerned to keep my job in there??" Ramsey is so loyal to the premise man. Also people forget that he is a pure, innocent Christian family man so his cluelessness was incredibly funny to me because it's authentic. The winner of this episode was clearly MJ. I wish her a good career in acting, she's super talented.

I forgot friends, training partners, coaches, whole segments of my life. A big part of why I kept my KZread channel going after that fight was to catalog experiences and thoughts so I wouldn’t forget them. All the sleep deprivation certainly didn’t help. The dudes taking potshots at my head when my eyes were closed certainly didn’t help. When I say it’s spooky, I mean it. I watched my grandmother devolve into dementia to the point where she didn’t know who I was anymore. @@lusteraliaszero Google "HR is not your friend." She is the boss. She is who HR reports too, and she is who decides what HR does. She decides how much the HR employees are paid. She is decided when they are fired. She decides what reports are passed up to the owners, if any, and she can take action on the reports without notifying anyone above her in 99% of companies. HR has one and only one job: make sure employees are being productive. If you are feeling bad about your boss, you are not productive, so you need to go. If you are threatening lawsuits against the boss, you are threatening lawsuits against the company, and you are threatening lawsuits against *them.* HR works for the company. They are part of the thing you are threatening to harm by reporting these things. So HR takes the report, tries to trick you into signing away your right to sue, then fires you. There job is to get rid of troublesome boat rocking employees, not to help them. If you have a complaint against a co-worker and you think it can't be solved peaceably (and if it can, do it yourself) only go to HR *if you know you are more important than who you're complaining against.* HR only has one job, do whats best for the company, and if there is a spat between two employees the one that's most useful is the one that stays. Period. It's xxxxing crazy how often people think HR is supposed to protect employees. They're not cops. They don't enforce laws. They don't make legal complaints on your behalf. They are employees of the company who are under the orders and control of the company for the benefit of the company.

The third scenario is genius I'm glad they include it. I remember in my time when I was a lab assistant in the forensic lab at the University. Sometimes female students or suppliers would go to the lab where I have my desk and when I was alone to avoid any kind of problem I opened all the windows and the the double doors and make sure to put the chair on the range of the security cameras.
I love this episode because it teach us that self defense is not all about fighting. It is also about how to run away from a fight.
@PaMuShin
Жыл бұрын
It is not exactly running away, running away will get you most of the time killed. It is rather a blend of soft skills like situational awareness, preemptive avoidance/striking and deescalation methods like verbal judo. If the girl were locking the door, if the cinema guy had friends or bystanders would have judged you "wrong" take for example the girl would have argued with him before the other guy came in. The rest of visitors who intervene could have perceived only parts of it and misjudge so suddenly you get mass brawl while the other one started it. There is so much to this delicated situations this is one point which makes hard2hurt in a way interesting although mikes vids in this regard get the least clicks which is a shame in my opinion.

@@F.A.-- Scenario #2 - Bloody guy vs. poo guy. You can see Icy Mike do a Home Alone thing in disbelief (or disgust).
Maybe the right solution was to protect yourself, but I love how Rokas saved both patients.
You really changed my whole idea on self defense. Scenario 1 and 3 is something I will have to take into consideration
Ramsey: "I REALLY want this job, though..." xD
Seth blocked that water and all I could think was "CHUBBY SURPRISE"
As a woman, I really felt the vulnerability in situation 3. I have always been aware of being alone with men that I do not know well in closed rooms. I think it is different for men, because they tend to be more assertive and aware of their ability to be aggressive. Women, not as much. What I have done is learn to take a que if I feel a slight bit uncomfortable that I open the door, or suggest we move the meeting into a more public space. Unless you are Ramsey, then it's all about the job.

As a man you avoid eye contact and keep your cool and leave asap. I had two flatmates trying to seduce me which made me lock my room.
And now for Ramsey’s next self-defense training, couple’s therapy.
What a performance by the actress - convincing and quick to adapt!

Yep, her acting made it. Very convincing.
Good job, everyone! The last bit was unpredictable. But that happens but no one ever really think that it's a self-defense situation. Interesting to see.
"I thought you were Sensei not sensitive": absolute belter of a line😂
I love that there were much more nuanced scenarios this time, really made me think on the layers and complexity of actual self defense. People often forget everything before the escalation. The final scenario being especially tricky. Watching everyone go I was thinking "how would I get out this scenario with minimal confrontation but also not complying with what they want?" Great move by mike, kept his cool, truly earning the icy mike name.
Ramsey is such a gem, I love this guy

They all are rare gems. Each in their own way. Just love Icy Mike ( such a mega chad dad. ). And sensai seth is just to damn funny.
In the third scenario I would probably be acting like Ramsey, I'd be like "why is this woman acting so weird" 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Just that third scenario alone makes this the best and most relevant self defence challenge ever. One of the absolute most important lessons of martial arts, should be to be able to set boundaries and be firm about them, without being aggressive. And from there, get out of uncomfortable situations. Showed this to my gf and we had a good talk about how serious and realistic this scenario is, for both men and women. Well done, love the series, already looking forward to next episode!
I don’t know which moment was best; Gabi kicking Rokas or Mike using the bathroom or Matt demanding to see “the man hiding in the cupboard!” 😂😂
I really enjoy Matt and loved his approach to each challenge here. It really shows how an ounce of communication and planning can be worth a pound of cure with thia kind of stuff.

I understand but you cannot plan selfdefense because the only things that happen to you are the one you did not plan for. But I agree with the rest.

@1individeo Agreed, hope for the best and plan for the worst.
Honestly, the 2nd scenario is the scariest out of all because every attacker from every situation from episode 1 to now has a reason, where as the 2nd scenario does not. It is very unpredictable and easy to misunderstood. Did someone get attacked? Why is the dude covered in poop? Why is the dude cutting himself? Never know if those guys are on drugs or mentally ill. Could be both or they are just crazy.
@neodigremo

2 is scary, but for a lot of people 3 is one of the most terrifying for a guy because it leaves you completely powerless. It is scary to be attacked by a big guy with a knife sure but there is a clear (if hard) way to be safe. But scenario 3...... I legit would be terrified if it happened because a) I am sure I would miss so many cues that I would end up in a scary position and b) I am in a true no win scenario in a lot of ways. As was said in the video for a guy my size, even a hint of an accusation and I am the assumed bad guy.

Sensei Seth did a scenario-based self defense evaluation before this where he was placed in a situation that was conceptually like this (one where you aren't sure who the "good guy" is, and who the "bad guy", or whether there is a "good guy" at all). In these types of situations, things can go sideways real fast.
I thought after the zombie apocalypse you could not top that off, but this episode has been by far the most interesting one. I can't believe this series is getting better!
Loved this episode. As a self defense instructor I can say that scenario based training is important especially the third scenario. I liked Mike's approach to the third scenario.
I just simply love Mikes solution to the third scenario
I think that an issue in the first scenario is the unexpectedness that should not be there honestly. It would have been better to present her as a tinder first date than their girlfriend: by presenting her as their girlfriend people had unreasonable expectations to know her. They would know if she was the kind of person to start a fight. If you contextualize a girl as my girlfriend I do not consider the possibility that she would go on to start a fight, because she would not be my girlfriend - or at the very least I would have been aware of this tendency.

Whether it's your current girlfriend or not doesn't matter. They are not training for a particular scenario, more like an abstract representation of similar experiences.
@bobon123

@@TotalWannabe Of course, the point is that however context matters: I do not act in the same way if I am with my mother or my girlfriend or my sister - very different people in terms of physical capabilities and behavior. The trick in the scene to get 5 points was to understand that the issue in the scene was your girlfriend behavior as much as the provoker. This part was made unfairly difficult by tricking the competitors in thinking that they knew well the person walking with them in the movie theater, presenting her as their girlfriend. If you tell me that this person is my girlfriend I do not think I have to protect a rude person by her physical attacks - or at least I think I would know it if that was a real risk. Everyone posed themselves to protect her by the attacker and made the mistake of ignoring the possibility that she would go there attacking him - but that was due to the context in which they presented the scene.

Fucking incredible! Thanks for giving Jeff Phillips work a wider audience! I'm in awe, how you two guys, Rokas and Jeff, are just throwing the new Gold Standard about everything youtube and self defense related out there!
Third scenario showed how social awareness can save your ass too. Avoiding the potential problem is the ideal self defense tactic.
"Can I go to the bathroom first?" Icey Mike is the GOAT 🐐
You guys are covering such a diverse set of scenarios. Bravo to everyone who helped put this together.
"I thought you were sensei, not sensitive" 😂😂
The whole 3rd scenario I was thinking “I’d lie and act like I had to go use the bathroom and never come back” and mike did it😂💪🏾

"...bye, have fun fighting each other" 😂 mister Dewey is hilarious as always. Oh man😂😂😂
This has to be my favourite of the the episodes so far. To create such real-world worst-case scenarios while wearing protective gear is just genius. It really shows how wits come into play before physical alterations mostly, which for me is how close this show is to actual real-world confrontations.
Loved this episode. Relatable self-defence scenarios that require situational awareness, picking up on social cues, and verbal skills. So important to learn. This series continues to be my favourite thing on KZread in 2023.
Mike literally lifting and moving the girl was great :) And clueless Ramsey was just priceless :D
I'm pretty sure I'd be Ramsey in the third situation, I also suck at picking up flirtatious language
Rokas I am litteraly impressed by what you and your partners have done, this is really clever, scenarios are amazing and entertaining, point system 👍... Its an amazing job. 👍

that "i thought you were sensei not sensitive" was so good
Honestly this is the most comprehensive series on self-defense I’ve seen. It’s super cool to see how each of the participants reacts to the scenarios. Well done!!
That third scenario was definitely the most challenging to navigate. So many things could go wrong, leaving you as the man the apparent bad guy and having to defend yourself legally. Icy Mike did an excellent job getting out of it. That scenario, or variations of it, do happen much more often than people think, and even in online versions. I've been in a similar scenario virtually, where no possibility of accusations of contact could be made, but not physically. In my case, I reminded the person that I was already in a relationship and she got defensive, but stopped her advance. If she hadn't, I'd have just logged out and gotten out of the situation that way.

There is one defensive line that do work with most women: "I like men". She let go and does not claims to have been harrassed. On the other hand It also works if you want to bang her as she instantly lowers her guard and allows conversation to happen.

phenomenal work. Commenting for exposure.
I understand Ramseys reaction perfectly. I probably would have reacted the exact same way. But also i like how he takes these scenarios very very seriously. Only two more episodes? Will there be a season 2? I need more episode they are the highlights of my weeks
It was very funny seeing Ramsey out of his comfort zone in both the first and last scenario, unfortunately he wasn’t able to completely defend the cinema guy from the mad girlfriend 😂
I recognize myself in Ramsey in the office scenario 😂
I feel like the fact that rokas recognized here comes a drunk man and tried to prevent the conflict before it even began, definitely deserves a bonus point for that
